I'm unfamiliar with the source material and am wondering if anyone has read it and plans to check out the debut of this series which is set to air this fall. I think Christopher Meloni is a pretty good character actor and have enjoyed his work in stuff like the Wet Hot American Summer film and Netflix series. But the real reason I plan on checking this out is Patton Oswalt playing the imaginary flying blue horse. Nerdist reported that this is the first of Grant Morrison's work to be adapted to the screen which at first doesn't seem accurate to me but here's their early preview of the series.

It's near the bottom of Morrison's output in terms of quality. Basically reads like a Garth Ennis or Warren Ellis book with just a minor touch of whimsy. But the premise is weird and strong, so a good adaptation could make for a show that rises above its source material. I'll check it out.

Yeah. I loves me some Grant Morrison but oohdamn that was not good.
Still... yeah. Whenever there's a Watchmen or a Ghost World movie or something I just assume that the adaptors are gonna $#%^ up the source material in a way that will piss me off.
So I guess I'm kind of excited for a decent concept with execution that could easily be improved.

Very nice adaptation. Improves on the source material quite a bit by injecting some dark humor and sleazy charm that was missing from the comic. I'm wondering what they're going to add for plot filler to stretch this six episodes, though. The first episode covered most of the first two issues plus a lot of stuff original to the show. And it's just a four issue comic.

s1 ep 1 "Saint Nick"
I thought that was a pretty crazy pilot and was surprised it worked so well given the premise. I really like the casting of Christopher Meloni and Patton Oswalt. I'm excited for the rest of the season.

Looking forward to seeing how this compares with the source material.
Yes, the two writers this immediately reminded me of were Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis.
Plus, FWIW, I've never, ever read the f-bomb so many times in one comics story, even undergrounds.
Ok story, we'll see how it plays out on SyFy.

Great cliffhanger of sorts to end episode 4! Looks like we have to wait until January 10th for the next episode though.

How involved is Morrison with the tv production? If he was the show-runner, or one of them, I'd be interested. I might watch it regardless, but that would move it up the list.

I don't know that he'd be qualified to be the show-runner since that's more an executive position with lots of HR responsibility; he would be better suited as the creative consultant. Considering his prominence as an author for DC and others, it's striking that none of his work has made it to the big or small screen. Perhaps all of his original characters are too meta?

I have the impression it's been a goal of his for some time - wasn't he even living in LA at some point?
Yeah, I probably used the wrong term - what I meant was, the person who not only comes up with the premise but also determines the direction and general "feel" of the show - I suppose like a Joss Whedon or the guy responsible for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. They don't usually write or direct every episode once it gets going, but they kind of get it started and show the other writers and directors what they want.
Or - since Morrison is a writer, not a tv guy, and has no directing experience - at least some kind of supervisory role in the writing department.
