I've been (very slowly) getting the Ultimate TMNT hard covers... which mostly feature just the Eastman/Laird stuff, with commentary by both after every issue. Strangely, #17 is in it, despite being out of continuity (what there was of it at the time), and by his own admission, not really being written by Eastman.
The story features MichelAngelo also, wandering feudal Japan 'searching for his brothers'. He finds an old Lord (named Sakai, of course) and his daughter fleeing from an evil Samurai trying to take over the region. Mikey does his thing and saves the day, then wanders off. The last splash shows us Mikey is writing the story (he asks his cat if it's good), which was a fun touch.
Anyway, anyone have any idea if this was, in fact, a direct tribute? I found it very odd that neither Eastman or Laird mentioned it in their post-issue notes, especially considering the character's name.
