I'm sure that I'm in the minority , but I really like the Fighting chance run from 425-443. I read it almost every year.

I agree with above posts:
Stern/Byrne run. Fighting Chance. 70's Secret Empire. Winter Soldier. First Waid/Garney run.

I really liked Roger McKenzie's run. Unfortunately tends to get overlooked due to what followed shortly after it, Stern & Bryne's run Really feel like it got to what made Cap such a unique and beloved character with a hearty dash of Kirby's influences on the book after he did OMAC for DC. Stern & Bryne also did likewise, but not to the extent of McKenzie I'm sure that I'm in the minority , but I really like the Fighting chance run from 425-443. I read it almost every year. That's an interesting one. I never thought about the super soldier serum in his system. Let alone, that it would even ever run out, thus effectively killing him. It was an interesting plot, that's unfortunately been used to death during Nick Spencer's run on the character as an excuse for Falcon to become Captain America (personally, I had and still have no qualms with Sam taking over the mantle. But when I first read all the clickbait news articles, I literally thought that it was some random early 20's kid, maybe Patriot from Young Avengers?) Also felt that it was kind of a not so subtle jab at Liefield as he was about to take over

I'm old. The Cap stories I remember best include:
- the first Sleeper arc in Tales of Suspense
- the Gene Colan issues, including the intro of Falcon
- Steve Englehart's run

The Gene Colan story that I remember the most is where he has to infiltrate a college and stop a socio-political "cult of personality" type from brainwashing students Wasn't the strongest story I've ever read by Colan, but it did have a fairly interesting plot. Also think that's where Fury's incredibly infantile rivalry for Contessa's affections with Cap started and where the book hit a real low point for me

There are only a handful of Cap runs I revisit from time to time.
-The Brubaker run from 1-25 (ending with the death of Cap). -The first Waid/Garney run, Man without a Country that started just after Gruenwald's run and ended when Heroes Reborn was launched (I didn't like the second Waid/Garney run from Heroes Return near as much). -the early issues of the Marvel Knights Cap run with art by John Cassaday (written by Neiber iirc) exploring the role of Cap in a post 9/11 world -the 70s Kirby Cap run -The Adventures of Captain America 4 issue prestige mini -the early GA Simon & Kirby stuff in Captain America Comics

If you like art, then check out Jim Steranko's issues. Those were great to look at.

Now I havent read a lot of Cap but I'd have to say either Stern/Byrne's run. Or the Grandmaster storyline with DD.

Brubaker's first run was the first time a Captain America solo story really grabbed me. I didn't particularly even want to start reading it, and was surprised how quickly I got into it. I'd only read some issues here and there from his past runs up until that point, and none of them seemed very special to me, but now I've gone back and purchased everything from #100-up.
