Thor #337“Doom!” 0.60 USD/0.75 CAN @ December 1983 Writer: Walter Simonson Penciler: Walter Simonson Inker: Walter Simonson Colorist: George Roussos Letterer: John Workman Editors: Mark Gruenwald Editor in Chief: James Shooter Synopsis: The story opens up with an ancient galaxy exploding, and a molten ingot of star stuff is left behind, but not left alone. And then the sound of thunder reverberated throughout a billion worlds. Back on Earth, Dr. Donald Blake is at a park contemplating that he would rather forsake his heritage of being the Asgardian God of Thunder for a day in order to be an ordinary mortal man. A Frisbee hits him from behind, and he handed back the Frisbee to the young man. Then a couple of middle aged men grabbed his cane and ushered him into an awaiting car. Inside was Nick Fury asking him for help, or rather his alter ego, Thor’s help. And the car converted to hover mode and they flew to the SHIELD Helicarrier above Manhattan. Inside the screening room, agent Sitwell showed Colonel Fury and Thor a spaceship heading towards Earth at faster than light speed. The ship passed a star and flared it to life and then sucked it in, with Sitwell theorizing the ship was refueling. They sent a probe but it went dead. Fury asked for Thor’s help regarding this matter, and Thor’s answer did not take too long. He was headed to space to intercept the Earth-bound spaceship. Meanwhile, in the halls of Asgard, an empty soul that is the Lady Sif approached a gluttonous Balder the Brave who has just returned from Hel. He looked double his weight. Apparently depressed, he has decided to just eat food and drink until he cannot anymore. He told Sif that Balder the Brave is no more. He has returned not fit to be a man or a god. Seeing that Balder is of no help, she turned to her brother, Heimdall the Watcher so that he may point her to where there is glorious battle. Alas, Heimdall told her he cannot, and that perhaps only Odin himself can be the only to help her. In the other side of the galaxy, Thor approached the alien spaceship that was fast approaching Earth. Its automatic armament of batteries let loose fire upon him, and he did battle with the ship. He disarmed the extensive outer batteries shelling him. He ripped through and outer wall and breached the inside of the alien ship. As he walked through, he came across a chamber housing some alien. And an arm and hand crashed through the housing grabbing his face. In another desolate corner of Asgard, high atop Loki’s castle, he witnessed from afar a Troll hunt. The Troll hid to escape his hunters, and was approached by a beautiful woman telling the Troll that she will help hide him to prevent capture. As the Asgardians arrived, Lorelei held the Troll telling the Asgardian hunters that strength is not enough to win, as she has proven. Indeed agreed Loki as he approached her, and wanted to talk to her back at his abode. The Asgardians warned Lorelei the danger of Loki, who threatened the Asgardians that they will feel Odin himself’s wrath if he found out about this illegal hunt. He sent them away. Back in the alien ship, the alien hand threw Thor on the far side of the ship. The creature emerged an introduced himself as Beta Ray Bill. He deduced that Thor is a demon who came to destroy his people. The two did battle. The battle-armored Beta Ray Bill was holding his own against Thor as the two traded blows. But the ship has sustained multiple damages, and it calculated Earth as a planet where it can enact repairs and headed that way. As the battle progressed, Thor lost the handle of Mjolnir. As Thor punched Bill he asked him to yield, but Bill would not. And then Thor reverted back to human, Donald Blake as he was not in contact with Mjolnir for an extended period of time. And Beta Ray Bill knocked out the human being. Just then the alien ship crash landed on Earth. Beta Ray Bill ordered the alien ship, whose name is Skuttlebut, to throw a protective stasis shield around him to protect him from the crashlanding. The unconscious Donald Blake who is in his vicinity was also thrown a protective stasis shield as well. Looking for the weapon, Mjolnir, Beta Ray Bill could not find it as it reverted back to a cane, which he picked up and stamped against one of the bulkheads. And instantly he was transformed to Beta Ray Thor. He is worthy to hold Mjolnir. Meanwhile SHIELD agents led by Nick Fury led a furious assault against the alien ship. Beta Ray Thor joined the battle outside wielding Mjolnir. And as the battle ensued, Beta Ray Thor was summoning thunder and lightning while whirling Mjolnir, Odin suddenly appeared summoning Thor. Mistaking Bata Ray Thor for his son, he summoned him instantly back into Asgard, and Beta Ray Thor vanished from the battle with no trace. As Nick Fury and his agents looked on, one of his agents saw the figure of a man. Donald Blake who stood atop the alien ship and yelled out to his father not to forsake him. Comments: I am sure sales figures must have been faltering tremendously by Thor #336. Upon the release of Thor #337, I am sure fans were very excited with Walter Simonson’s debut on this series. As readers came to know, his work on Thor is brilliant and critically acclaimed. He immediately hit his stride in his first issue. He immediately introduced a new character that will stand the test of time, and re-established the heart of series, a being worthy and full of honor in order to hold Mjolnir. He went against expected norms and the new hero looks more like an antagonistic beast than hero. Yet, he wielded Mjolnir, which only a few in the Marvel Universe can claim to hold. In the beginning of the issue, at the park, Donald Blake laments that he wishes he can forsake being Thor and be a normal human. By the end of the issue, he is human, and Beta Ray Bill is Thor. Now he got what he wanted, and he is shocked and upset. If that isn't a subtle "American whining about work," that we all do from time to time, then I don't know what is. When the job is gone, then all of a sudden, we're not whining anymore. Thor didn't know how good he had it until he lost it. The initial cover page has the title smashed. Something is amiss and something new is taking place. That is one of the most iconic cover pages in the history of Marvel. For long time Thor fans and new ones, this is a great jumping on point. Reading this book, you can tell that all involved, primarily Walter Simonson, resurrected this series and at the same time elevated it into excellence. And I am looking forward into my second journey into the legendary Walter Simonson run on the Thor series.

Thor 338
“A Fool and His Hammer” 0.60 USD/0.75 CAN @ December 1983 Writer: Walter Simonson Penciler: Walter Simonson Inker: Walter Simonson Colorist: George Roussos Letterer: John Workman Editors: Mark Gruenwald Editor in Chief: James Shooter Synopsis: Atop the crash-landed Skuttlebutt ship on Earth, a desperate Donald Blake yells out in the storm for his father. From behind, Nick Fury emerged to tell him S.H.I.E.L.D. was tracking the ship, Skuttlebutt, and saw the alien and Thor's battle. He ensured Blake not to worry, because once his father realized it wasn't Thor that was summoned, there's going to be an angry Odin. Meanwhile in Asgard, Beta Ray Thor is perplexed as he appeared in an unknown environment to him and starts hammering away. Odin himself appeared before him, and Beta Ray Thor slung the Mjolnir toward Odin, who stopped his creation in mid-flight. He encased Bill in a trapped bubble. Then using his all seeing eye, Odin located Thor in his mortal form, and summoned him. Blake disappeared in a bolt of lightning and reappeared immediately in Asgard in his Thor form. Odin was glad to see his son. And seeing that the noble warrior, Bill, is one warrior with honor and great battlefield skills, he also invited the alien atop the mountain, Hlidskjalf. He spoke with the two warriors regarding the Mjolnir situation, and Bill did say he owned it because he won it in fair combat, at which Thor denied losing to the alien. Bill went with his origin story of the core of their galaxy exploded and his people left their home galaxy to live elsewhere but they were followed by demons, whom Bill fought with Skuttlebutt giving his people enough time to escape. In another part of Asgard, Lorelei and "Thor" were in a garden. And lady Syf was strolling around looking for someone. And he saw "Thor" and Lorelie making out. And enraged Syf swung on "Thor's" face knocking him to the ground. And then she stormed away. Lorelei and "Thor" erupted in laughter as "Thor" slowly changed back to his real form, Loki. Odin decided that Thor and Bill will fight to the death in Skartheim, where even gods may perish. He proclaimed this battle in front of all in the great Asgardian Hall. This is a fight to the death with the winner goes the might Mjolnir. Both Bill and Thor are transported into Skartheim. Bill gets the first blow in. They both did battle near an active lava flow. It is a physical battle but neither one has gotten the better of the other. In another side of Asgard, a recently resurrected Balder the Brave along with the large warrior, Volstagg are walking talking about food and Balder sharing seeing visions of those whom he killed and it was bothering him. And they were ambushed by an Asgardian making a name for himself. He swung at Balder and missed, and Balder continued to walk away, while Volstagg stepped in and stepped on the stranger's foot while telling him the story of Balder the Brave and his many feats that has saved Asgard many times over. And that story will continue in another comic book issue, as we get back to the tremendous battle between Thor and Bill. Bill caught Thor making a mistake and threw the side of the hill debris at him. Thor caught one of the large stones and threw it back at Bill who fell to the lava pit below. But before meeting his demise, Bill manuevered himself to land on a "raft" of obsidian below. And Thor landed on that "raft" and the two continued their battle until they both exhausted every remaining strength and the next thing we know is that both are laying side by side and unconscious as the "raft" of obsidian is about to hurtle down to the lava pit which will kill both combatants. But the heat seemingly woke up Bill. All he had to do was jump off and he would have won, but he didn't want Thor to die a senseless death as he fought gallantly. And he carried Thor and while hurting inside jumped off with Thor but they both were whisked away back to the halls of Asgard. Holding an unconscious Thor in his arms, he declared to Odin that Mjolnir is rightfully his as he has bested Thor in combat once again. Comments: Beta Ray Bill has bested Thor twice now. And on this occasion, not as Beta Ray Thor. It is interesting how this will pan out with the creation of Stormbreaker. Also, the god of mischief is at it again as he fooled lady Syf by being disguised as "Thor" and making Syf jealous as "Thor" was making out with Lorelei. Then there is the recently resurrected Balder the Brave, who seems to be really out of it and just wandering. But who can blame him, after all he just came back from Hel. There are interesting sub stories to the main plot, which is the battle between Bill and Thor. Simonson is crafting such interesting occurrences, that the reader cannot help but look forward to seeing what will happen when Syf meets up with Thor, and will Balder the Brave snap out of it.

Thor 339
“Something Old, Something New...” 0.60 USD/0.75 CAN @ January 1984 Writer: Walter Simonson Penciler: Walter Simonson Inker: Walter Simonson Colorist: George Roussos Letterer: John Workman Editors: Michael Carlin Editor in Chief: James Shooter Synopsis: The bionic alien warrior, Beta Ray Bill has bested the Mighty Thor in single combat. But as they are summoned in Odin's presence, both lie unconscious. Odin gave the order that these valiant warriors not perish, and that to summon Asgard's greatest physicians to care for them. As both warriors recover from their grievous injuries, the women develop their own opinions. The attendant is impressed with the alien warrior. Some are curious about him. Lorelei is repulsed by Bill's physical looks. Lady Sif on the other hand is impressed that Bill not only defeated Thor, but was able to lift Mjolnir. Odin visited his bedridden son, Thor. Thor is ashamed of his defeat and declared to his father that he will relinquish his godhood and once physically better that he will leave Asgard and just roam the stars. Odin tells his son, that might not be so and there might be an alternative as even Beta Ray Bill did not like the result. Thor still would not budge with his decision. Odin then visited Beta Ray Bill. They had a cordial conversation. Bill was troubled by his decision. Although the Magic Hammer would benefit defending his people, he just couldn't bring himself to kill Thor as per the combat's rules. Odin is moved, and agreed to help the recuperating alien warrior. And then we see Odin on horseback, cross the forbidden path through the mounts of Ullthang, and entered Nidavellir, the Realm of the Dwarves. And he sought and found Eitri the Dwarf, the greatest of all dwarf smiths, and they sat together and talked. But the dwarves are still bitter from an ancient wrong committed against them by the Asgardian gods. Eitri said they have a champion now. If Odin can send an Asgardian woman who can defeat their champion then he will do as Odin bids, but if the Asgardian woman loses, then she must stay with the dwarves and serve the dwarven champion forever. Back in the House of Healing in Asgard, Thor and Beta Ray Bill look on in the view that shows the outside. Thor said he lost Mjolnir and will miss wielding it. Bill on the other hand says not to let go of Mjolnir easily as the realm they fought in was the same as the place he was born in, and the heat and environment was not detrimental to him, unlike it was to Thor. Then they saw the battle ready and armored lady Sif riding off in the yonder to battle. They asked the nurse where she was off to, and both were surprised that the lady Sif went to battle a champion warrior on behalf of them both, and might never ever return. As Sif rode on, she flashes back on her meeting with Odin, and that she decided this on her own accord, and not ordered by Odin. But secretly she did this not for Thor, but for Beta Ray Bill whom she wants to receive favor in his eyes that she too is a warrior born. All of a sudden, she was attacked by a humongous dwarf. It is the dwarven champion, Throgg. As Sif was unhorsed, she drew her weapon and did battle with the humongous dwarven champion. Meanwhile, beyond the Nine Realms, a solitary figure is hammering and anvial on a giant sword. There is a storm rising. In a solitary area in Quebec, Canada, and earthquake trembles the home of a solitary man living there. It is in conjunction with each anvil blow. And then an explosion happened. A giant dark red creature screamed that he is finally free after being imprisoned for millennia, and he is looking for vengeance. Back at the battle, the giant dwarf warrior's ineptness against a skilled warrior in Sif continued until lady Sif skillyfully knocked out the dwarven champion, but refused to kill him. Lady Sif demanded that the dwarves honor their commitment with Odin. Eitri the dwarven smith readily agrees, as they wanted the dwarven champion to lose as he was the biggest dwarf amongst them and was a bully and many a dwarf's life amongst them as something really bad. Losing to a woman will make Throgg embarassed and never show his face around them again. And at that, Eitri ordered the dwarves to the furnace as they have to construct a weapon. Sif returned to Asgard, and has a heart-to-heart talk with Beta Ray Bill. He is worried about his people. Sif tells him that Odin is looking after them from afar, and asked him would he return to Asgard if he finished vanquishing his people's enemies? He said no, even if he wanted to return to such a perfect world, because when he was remade as a warrior, he surrendered all humanity that was left in him. Lady Sif was saddened by this. At Nidavellir, the dwarves are hard at work in the giant furnaces and cauldrons, all under the watchful eye of Odin and his guests, Thor, Bill, and Sif. And upon final completion, Eitri yelled out to Odin to place the magic charge on the weapon now before the mold cooled, as they do not have enough metal for a second try. And a deafening roar occurred as thunder struck the weapon and the magics that are desired by Odin is now locked within the Uru Metal forever, in the weapon. And Odin handed Bill a gauntlet and ordered him to get the metallic weapon from the scorching heat. Beta Ray Bill felt the power. And the Enchanted Hammer exploded and transformed him to Beta Ray Thor. And Odin gives him a talk regarding the responsibility of wielding, Stormbreaker, which is Bill's new weapon. And then he gave Mjolnir and officially gave it back to Thor. He told Bill he may go to his people before his enemies overtake them. But he may not overpower them alone. Thor stepped up and told his father, both of them will go, and together, perhaps he and Bill can defeat Bill's enemies. Odin warned he may not be able to help from afar. And Thor summoned his war chariot with the mystical goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder. As they were prepared to leave, Sif held them up, wanting to go with them to join them in battle. And Thor gladly accepted, and all three warriors flew on the chariot on its way to glorious battle. Comments: There's only one thing you can say about this issue... 'Nuff Said! It's almost as perfect and simple a story as I have ever recalled. It also moved the plot of Bill's people forward, as a more empowered Bill along with two equally empowered warriors are on their way to save his people. We also see a love brewing between Sif and Bill. And to top it all off, we have bullying story in regards to the dwarves. Simonson brilliantly played that off. And then we are left with a giant red monster being released from a millennial prison. Is this Surtur? We'll see in upcoming issues.

Thor 340“Though Hel Should Bar the Way!” 0.60 USD/0.75 CAN @ February 1984 Writer: Walter Simonson Penciler: Walter Simonson Inker: Walter Simonson Colorist: George Roussos Letterer: John Workman Jr. Editors: Michael Carlin & Mark Gruenwald Editor in Chief: Jim Shooter Synopsis: As Sif, Bill, and Thor, soar through the galaxies in search of Bill's people, they finally caught up to the spaceships of Bill's people. Unfortunately, the demonic monster horde is already upon the rear echelon ships. Bill's people under suspended animation cannot do anything. And as per Odin's advise, Thor and Bill must go to the source of the demon horde in order to defeat them. Sif stayed behind to protect Bill's people from the horde that is currently attacking. As Thor and Bill follow the returning horde to their origin, they found out it is from Bill's home planet. It has been transformed where endless hordes of demons are coming from their realm and entering man's normal realm. As they prepare to attack, the demon horde sees them, and attacks and overwhelms them. And Thor and Bill make their way to the portal's origin to close it, and battle the demon horde as they progress towards it. Meanwhile in some dark recesses, a gigantic figure is still hammering an anvil to a gigantic sword. Each time his blows hits the gigantic sword, it is heard throughout the cosmos, and more demons from beneath awaken to it. Back at the great fleet, Sif is defending Bill's people from the demon horde. But they kept multiplying more and more in number as the seconds pass by. As they prepare a simultaneous assault, weapons batter from behind her. It is Skuttlebutt, repaired and arrived just in time. And as she communicates with the automated ship, they battle the demon horde and formulate a game plan to lead the demon horde away from the fleet, and to chase them, to give Thor and Bill enough time to destroy them at the origin. Meanwhile back in the gardens of Asgard, Volstagg continues to tell the story of the death of Balder to the Asgardian he is sitting on. He continued on and on until the arrival of Hogun, one of the Warriors Three, and he let the Asgardian go. Thor and Bill reached the beginning of the portal. The heat was too much but the two got on either side of the portal. And both hurl their magic hammers through the portal's center to collide within. And Stormbringer and Mjolnir erupted inside the portal with such a thunderous boom. At the other end of the galaxy, inside Skuttlebutt, Syf is in an endless battle with the demon horde. As she is about to be overwhelmed, Skuttlebutt prepares to self destruct to take as many of the hordes of demons with it. As it counted down, Lady Syf ordered Skuttlebutt to wait, suddenly the demon hordes started phasing out and disappearing, until there were none left. And a tired Syf knelt down to rest. Worried about Thor and Bill, her worries were put to rest as Skuttlebutt reported they were alive and on their way back. Filled with Asgardian Warriors, the three return and enter the Asgardian city to the holler and celebrations of all in attendance. As Thor and Bill change and prepare to bath after a long arduous battle, there is sadness in Bill. He tells Thor that he cannot believe it, but he feels sad about leaving Asgard and all that he has found there. He is a bionic warrior and cannot enjoy humanity, even the touch of a woman's hand. In another part of Asgard, Odin summoned Syf, and confides in her that there is a melancholy in Bill that he cannot explain, and that he knows that Syf is endeared to Bill. Syf told Odin that there are things they would not know unless Bill shares it with them. She shared what she found out about Bill from Skuttlebutt. About the many that did not survive the transformation to a bionic warrior, and the pain beyond imagining on the transformation. And sadly the change is irreversible. Later that evening, in the hall, Thor and Bill stand in front of Odin and in front of the Asgardians. He beckons they both raise their respective hammers to receive a needful gift. And lightning crackles and it is done. Apparently no change, Odin tells Bill to strike his hammer on the ground, which he did, and he was transformed to his normal self again, and is no longer a bionic warrior. Tap it on the ground again and he will be turned once more to Beta Ray Thor. Thor jested with him to joust in his current form. Odin declared Thor is heir to the throne of Asgard. Bill prepared to depart, and he is accompanied by Syf, who told Thor that as a warrior maiden in this voyage she may regain her temper, which she would not if she stayed in Asgard. Odin teleports Syf and Bill to Skuttlebutt. As Odin and Thor depart chitchatting, in the ocean on Earth, an oil tanker is suddenly attacked by a humongous green dragon, stating that vengeance is his and that Thor is his to slay. Comments: The monster at the end is Fafnir. And that will be one heckuva slobberknocker when Thor meets up with the monster dragon. The other monster fashioning the giant sword is perhaps Surtur. I am not sure, but he's the one that has a giant sword that is an enemy of the Asgardians. Simonson is on a roll. Entertainment to the max, and cannot wait for the further continuation of this classic run.

This is really one of the few, if not honestly only, Thor writer that held my attention for 100% of their run. It was Thor 379 and 380 with Fing Fang Foom (I really got into him after reading Legion of the Night) that I discovered Simonson's work. The owner of LCS I was going to at the time pointed me to issue 337 and I was hooked. I grabbed up every issue I could get. And really liked Beta Ray Bill. I though his look was super cool. I ever read the Thor Corp I like him some much. I really liked him in Omega Flight too. I'd still like to read Strombreaker as well.

I had been a big Thor fan as a kid. I had loved the Mangog storyline in which Asgard is trashed, the Ragnarok issue, even the wonderfully silly idea of Viking gods sailing through space on a wooden drakkar. I had stopped reading regularly after something like issue 250, but read an issue here or there. I had also loved Simonson's Dr. Fate one-shot in First Issue Special, one of the very best comics ever produced.
So when Marvel Age announced (in a very Simonsonesque house ad) that Walt was taking over Thor with #337, I was ready to give it a shot. And man!!! It was like a bolt out of the blue! I was thrilled! Forget the X-Men, forget Daredevil, THIS was the title I was feverishly expecting each month!!! The bold stylized style, the gorgeous Norse designs, the approach that managed to both pay homage to Kirby but be entirely fresh, the feeling that at last something was happening to change the status quo, it was a magical combination!

My first Marvel comic was a Simonson Thor issue, and this is still in my opinion one of the best runs Marvel ever published.

I had read the earlier Simonson/Dezuniga short run in Thor and knew straight off that this was going to be some good stuff. Simonson had matured as an artist/storyteller and his style was pure fantastic fantasy for the eye to behold. With that very 1st issue he grabbed your attention with writing and artistry screaming loudly that you HAD BETTER START FOLLOWING THIS! It only gets better along the ride...
Toss aside all the others who have supposedly been worthy because Bill takes that title and makes his version of being the Thunder God truly his own. No others before or after have been worthy enough in the eyes of Odin to make the Aesir Lord willing to create a hammer and bestow power upon. THAT IS WORTHY beyond compare.

I need to reread this! Actually, I need to finish it. I started over a year ago and things got buys and I never finished the run (I think I read the first 12 issues or so). This thread is making me want to get back into them!

As would happen to so many other great creations, however, Bill would never live up to his great potential after the Simonson run. In Thor #337-340, he proves himself to be as noble, as powerful, as heroic as Thor... and maybe a little more! But in more modern appearances, he was mostly treated like a second rate Thor, usually being beaten up by some bad guy to establish their nastiness. I would have loved Bill to keep Stormbreaker but abandon the Thor look, if only so he could make his mark as himself. I mean, the guy beat up Thor before he got the hammer; how much more powerful shouldn't he be after?

We have so many Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man based comics so why not drop some of these for Bill getting some glory? Let him wander the Universe and show his skills. Why do we need a lady Thor and an unworthy Thor when we got BILL, Savior of the Universe to save the day!

Beta Ray Bill is one of those characters that I think should only have been used by his creator.

Does Bill even appear much in the MCU nowadays? Has he been in anything decent since Simonson's stuff?

Don't know, but he did turn up in other books back then, including Power Pack.
He's sort of like Bill Sienkiewicz with Warlock...no one else can really draw him.
