In retrospect, a lot of these designs seem Meso-American. Ajax looks like he would fit in just fine in a mural in Chichen Itza. Which was absolutely Kirby's intent, as in his very first appearance Ajax is identified as the Inca god Tecumotzin. Cei-U! I summon the Master's master plan!

From the designs of Kirby's "face-framed" characters as a whole, I suspect he was quite a fan of Meso-American art.

In retrospect, a lot of these designs seem Meso-American. Ajax looks like he would fit in just fine in a mural in Chichen Itza. That was a deliberate reference in Ajak's case: he was locked away in an Incan pyramid or something for millenia. (edit:) sorry, I see Cei-U already adderssed this point.
