That two-pointed thing on her classic costume. I think about it a lot.
What the hell even is it? What possible purpose could it serve? Has anyone in the real world ever wore something like that? How does it stand up?
Of all Kirby's visual designs this might be the most creative.

I never liked her costume in general and disliked the head-piece because of that - too much red! The swimsuit, the headpiece, the tights and whatever you call the see-through sleeve things, all different shades of the same colour - and then they changed her hair to a reddish tint as well!
But when I see the earlier versions with the black hair it doesn't look as bad. The best version I've seen is when they made her swim suit a two-piece and got rid of the pink tights - apparently not on purpose but because of a colouring error. And lo and behold, the head-piece doesn't look bad then. They should have went with that as her standard look.
But I think Hela's has to take top prize in any discussion of Kirby heroines' head-pieces. Barda's weird helmet thingy is up there too.

Well, Jack must have a reason for that headpiece is called a wimple ... Read the link it's has all the answers ... A wimple has a very interesting history. These garments are worn to the cover the head and wrap around the neck or chin. It was created in medieval Europe when it was improper for a married woman to show her hair. In the 15th century Italian women redesigned them to show off their elaborate hairstyles and thus status. Today it is still worn by nuns. The Scarlet Witch is fully covered, yet has a very sensual costume. She identifies herself as a witch, yet adds a piece of clothing associated with nuns. It is fascinating how a simple piece of fabric can reflect the complexity of a character. WimpleNuns today still wear them - their version is more conservative. It's a Marvel Comics thing to give female character a more complex and sexy look.

A quick correction to something berkley said: Scarlet Witch began her comics career with auburn hair. Marvel didn't begin coloring it black until Avengers #16. It remained black until Roy Thomas requested it be restored to the original color when she returned to the team in Avengers #75.

Wait, DOES her head thing wrap down around her neck? (Or did it in her first appearances?) Then it would make some kind of sense.

Except her neck is bare there, unless there's a serious coloring mistake.

Except her neck is bare there, unless there's a serious coloring mistake. I can't answer that question but I did the best that I could. I don't think that this picture is a serious coloring mistake and I believe it is intended to be that way and that's best that I can do here.

Thanks to Cei-U for the correction. I still like the black hair better with the read costume. I always pictured a wimple as being a more complete head covering and wiki seems to confirm that but I only glanced at the first paragraph so maybe there are other kinds of wimple and the term has enough of a range to include the Witch's whatever-it-is. I just took a quick at the early Avengers cover gallery and I see that SW has the two-piece suit on the covers of #20, 21, & 33. I got this wrong too, as she still has the pink tights or body-suit and the head-piece still looks kind of clunky and unattractive to my eyes. Also, though #33 and possibly #21 look like they could be colouring errors, the closer view on the cover of #20 sure looks to me like it was intended to be a two-piece suit and not a mis-coloured one-piece.

Everyone that has that head piece uses this to keep it attached to their heads.

Okay, there it seems to wrap around her neck which would qualify it for wimple-dom. So maybe her head thing did originate as something vaguely resembling actual earth clothing that was worn by humans.

Everyone that has that head piece uses this to keep it attached to their heads. That's gotta hurt, but damned if I can come up with a better explanation.

Wanda's head thing did wrap around her entire head up until she temporarily left the team in Avengers #28. When she returned in #37. it had been simplified into the tiara (for lack of a better term) that merely framed her face. Don Heck was responsible for the redesign, tholugh whether on his own initiative or at the suggestion of Stan or Roy I couldn't say.

Whatever the reason, I'm glad they did it. The original design is horrible, looks like somebody shoved her face through a napkin.

I guess that Electro had a wimple. Then again, I've always seen him as a wimpy character, so it is appropriate.
