Practicality will always be the most important thing, but this electric ambulance is not going to win any awards for aesthetic value:

I am incensed to learn how widespread polio transmission is revealed to be in New York state (and likely elsewhere in North America).
For crying out loud, we were this close to eradicating the virus for good, with only Afghanistan and Pakistan still showing wild cases. There are no natural hosts for the virus other than humans, so once we'd gotten rid of polio in the human population, it would have joined smallpox in the cemetery of medical horrors that finally died out.
And the worst of it is that we do have the means to eradicate it, but are too complacent to do so or believe Gwyneth Paltrow over the surgeon general.

He came out of it relatively unscathed (my grandparents took him to Mexico for some treatments that hadn't been approved in the U.S. at the time). This would have been circa 1945. That we are facing this, along with an uptick in measles and other preventable diseases, is just an indication that we are a failed society. 40 plus years of destroying the U.S. education system is definitely taking its toll.

On Youtuber scimandan's Flat Earth Friday today, there was a Dunning-Kruger alumnus who insists that NASA's famous 1972 photo of the Earth known as the blue marble is fake! His proof? He used a website allowing us to see the day- and nightime parts of the world at different times (the results are projected on a flat map of the world.) According to the map, Africa and Europe should be in broad daylight at the time the photo was taken. Here's the 1972 photo : Now looking at the image, the fellow smugly claims that since we don't see Europe, it means it must be night there! The photo is a fake, sheeple! An astute commentator pointed out that it's equally easy to use a free program called Celestia to generate a picture of the Earth at the exact same time, and from any altitude we choose. I thought that was pretty clever and did the test, estimating the angle at which Apollo 17 was approaching the Earth. I'd say it's pretty convincing. God protect us from arrogant ignorance!

O God protect us from arrogant ignorance! Isn't arrogant (or willful as I call it) ignorance another name for opt-in stupidity? -M

That reminds me, the UK has a crisis about energy affordability. And I am seeing some utter stupidity on social media. Some are spreading a meme around about how you should rip out your gas/electricity meter and install your own. They claim the energy will still reach your property, but as the meter will be your own, you will not be liable to pay for energy; their ‘logic’ is that any contract you have with an energy company only applies if it’s their meter. Where do I start with that? Firstly, if a contract only applies with your energy provider if it’s their meter, then I am sure they’d close that loophole. They’re hardly gonna provide energy to you if you rip out their meter and install/supply your own. Imperfect analogy, but it would be like tinkering entirely with your car - ripping out the engine and replacing it with your own - and then expecting Ford to maintain it. But, the keyword for me is UNSAFE. You just know that some fool out there will rip out a meter. Which sounds dangerous. Very dangerous. And where would you get a new meter from? Meters ‘R’ Us? How would you install it? Would a trained installation engineer do the work? And then where would you get the energy from? ”Good morning, British Gas. I ripped out your meter so am no longer obliged to pay you, but, erm, could you get some gas to me?”
This is the dubious (IMO) ‘advice’ going around:

Sounds like the kind of tripe so-called "sovereign citizens" peddle. They invent legal clauses that supposedly dispense them from paying taxes, needing a driver's license, or heed what police officers tell them. They still can benefit from all of society's perks, of course.
Their sheer lunacy is staggering, but humanity has always had its fair share of lunatics. To quote something I read not long ago : "we always had our village idiots, but nowadays the internet allows them to organize".

Indeed.
The sad thing is, I just know someone - even if it’s only one in a million - is going to be destroying/messing with their meter, possibly causing injury or death. And all while not questioning exactly how they plan to get gas through their pipes. I mean, they have a plan, right? Rip out the meter and…erm, dig for shale gas. I trust they have a plan to get the gas they desire from somewhere and to their self-installed pipes.
Wouldn’t bother me if not for the fact someone will do it. I live in an apartment block, hope no-one here is planning such stupidity.
I won’t get too far with thread drift from science, but I see similar memes, e.g. someone stated that council tax is technically illegal and you don’t have to pay it. Hmm, I should try that. I’m sure I’ll enjoy a nice visit to the judge to explain why I haven’t paid a tax that I would say is legally binding.

Incidentally, I just Googled “buying your own meter” (not because I want to!), so as to debunk that. Not gonna explore this in detail and waste time. Some sites stating it can only be installed with your supplier’s knowledge. I’d also question for renters whether you’d breaching a tenancy by doing that, so I really hope people don’t follow stupid advice as we could be looking at people causing health issues, killing themselves, breaching tenancies, etc. Hope people wake up.

Nature reports that up to 85% of the large plastic objects found in the infamous Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch does not come from continental waste, but from fishing vessels... fishing vessels mostly belonging to just three countries (Japan, South Korea and China). In a sense, I view that as somewhat encouraging. It's much easier to regulate a single industry than the whole planet's economy, and countries holding most of the blame can be shamed into mending their ways. Of course, I'd rather we stopped vacuum-cleaning the oceans and returned to sustainable fishing practices, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Unless I'm near a fishing vessel. Then I definitely hold my breath.

So, that would've been a solar eclipse then, right? As viewed from North America? Yes. I had planned to travel to Tennessee to watch it, but it would have been a very long drive and I didn't have any time off at work. Plus, the next total solar eclipse in North America is due next year, and our home town will be right on the pass of totality! I fully intend to send my students outside if I'm teaching when it happens.
