Written by Gordon Rennie. Art and Cover by Duke Mighten. OK this review is definitely biased. Fighting American is one of my quirky comic book obsessions. I have read every story ever published (Prize, Harvey, DC, Awesome & now Titan). Don't know why the satire mixed with patriotism appeals to me but it does. Anyway this title picks up where Simon & Kirby ended the series back in 1954. Fighting American & Speedboy jump forward to 2017 chasing an old villain Poison Ivan. Rennie does a great job with a quick recap of FA's origin before jumping right into the action. He manages to recapture the frenetic pace of the classic comics while keeping a balance with our modern sensibilities. It will be interesting to see how FA & SB adjust to 2017 with future issues. Because it looks like they will staying in 2017 for awhile. Mighten's art is a mixed bag for me. While his storytelling abilities & action scenes are top notch some of the art is too cartoony & distorted for my tastes. His FA & SB look great & the backgrounds are decent. So yes I really enjoyed this issue. If future issues are this good Fighting American may have a "fighting chance" on the stands (pun intended). 9/10.

Your Pal Archie #3: two stories are included in this issue. The first continues from the previous issue and features “the new Reggie”. Reggie continues to be nice after getting hit in the head last issue. He declares Archie his best friend (going as far as suggesting they get best friend bracelets, coordinating their outfits, and calling each other all the time). Reggie gets carried away with being nice and much of Archie’s time is spent keeping Reggie from falling down escalators and other mayhem. All is revealed by the end of the story-which was kind of a let down. Not a fan of how Reggie isn’t part of the group like in the past. The second story is about Archie being banned from the Lodge mansion after his clumsiness causes all sorts of trouble. Much of the humor is visual in this issue. We see Archie getting into all kinds of messes and these are rendered with flair and fun. 8/10

#3. Script by Ty Templeton. Art by Dan Parent and Ty Templeton. Cover by Dan Parent. First story concludes. Reggie being nice. Funny story. Like mrjupiter I like Reggie & think stories are better when focused on the 5 main characters rather than the main 4. The second story is typical Archie vs Hiram Lodge. Other than the "silly" hair styles the art is classic Archie. I hope these stories will be collected. A collection would make a nice Christmas or birthday present. 8/10.

#12. Written by Ryan Stegman. Art by Brian Level. Cover by Ryan Stegman. Last issue with Annie being a kid. Stegman & Level do a great job wrapping up this run. We get closure with Normie & Liz. We see the X-Men again. Stegman nails how important family is. Annie appreciates her parents. And we jump ahead 8 years on the last page. Mixed feelings. I think next issue will be more like Spider-Girl which I loved. But I am going to miss little Annie. 7/10.

#32. Written by Joshua Williamson. Art by Christian Duce. Cover by Kelley Jones. A turning point. Still not a fan of the Negative Flash. But Williamson has Barry transferred to Iron Heights to work instead of CCPD. He also has Wally II helping him get his new powers under control. So some of the stuff I don't like has been played down. I really like Duce's art on the book. Love the last page as a character that we thought was gone makes a return. 7/10.

#27. Script by Charles Soule. Art by Ron Garney. Cover by Mike Deodato. DD is locked away in a pit as Blindspot reveals how he got his vision back. We also find out who the villain is behind all this in addition to the Hand. Soule continues the story he started with Blindspot way back in #1. Well done. Next issue the conclusion before we deal with Fisk as Mayor of NYC. 8/10.

What's the story on Soule - any creator-owned stuff I could try rather than his Marvel/DC or other work-for-hire?

What's the story on Soule - any creator-owned stuff I could try rather than his Marvel/DC or other work-for-hire? Twenty Seven and its sequel Twenty Seven Second Act is where I discovered him. Both from Image, based on the conspiracy/mythology buit up around rock stars dying before they turn 27 (Jimi, Janis, Jim, Kurt, etc.). I think he did Letter 44 from Oni or BOOM as well, about Earth's first encounter with alien life, the letter refers to a letter from the incumbent president to the president elect given to him upon inauguration briefing him on the alien situation and a mission to deep in the solar system undertaken under absolute secrecy. -M

I'm more attracted to the premise of Letter 44 and after a brief image search the artwork looks better to me as well, so I might go with that one or perhaps the Curse Words thing in the other post.

Wonder Woman #32: I really want to enjoy the Wonder Woman book. I really do. While this issue was a bit better than last issue, the second half didn’t do much for me. I enjoyed the first half. Wonder Woman, Steve, and his friends from The WW movie fight a bunch of parademons. Lots of fun banter between WW and Steve as well as Steve and friends. The mystery deepens as more deaths are revealed and these deaths are accompanied by Energy spikes associated with Apokolips. The 2nd half deals with Wonder Woman inheriting Hercules’s estate and finding her twin brother. Not a fan of the new 52 remnants here. I prefer the classic origin of WW being sculpted from clay and being the only child on Paradise Island. The art is C list and even Bryan Hitch’s cover looks stiff and just blah. 6/10

After years of the genre sort of languishing in the comics field we've really seen some amazing sci-fi books these last five years or so.

Hellboy and the BPRD #18"1955: Occult Intelligence #2" Story by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson Art by Brian Churilla Summary: Both Hellboy and his adoptive father come closer to solving their mysteries. Plot: Roberson and Mignola continue to slowly build on the mysteries surrounding Enkladite and other secret occult investigation teams. While I enjoyed seeing Cynthia Eden Jones and the action with the giant mutated sea turtle was fun I feel like both stories are being under served by the need to share the same issue. If each story were given more breathing room I feel like the characterizations would be richer and the intrigue and mystery would be deeper which would create far better reading experiences. Art: Churilla's art still makes the human characters look far too young but I loved the fight between Hellboy and the Seaturtle. Grade: 7/10
