I think I would have liked the new Batman costume if it was less monochromatic. I prefer to see shades of blue on the cape/cowl and a yellow belt or symbol.

Honestly can't wait to hear his Batman voice. Likewise, but anything will be a step up from "Need a Ricola Batman?" gruffness Bale threw in his last 2 films. [/quote] He was taking Weezies. For that real Jeffersons sound.

PapaShogun, you are to be commended for your honest and forthright explaination of your situation. Most places on the internet you wouldn't be able to get away with that as the attacks and mockery would bury you.
Without this turning into a group therapy session, I can understand the paralyzing fear that can keep you from even trying. Sometimes there's no other solution than forcing yourself to plow forward. But one thing that can help with the fear is gaining some self confidence, some positive feedback for your work.
I don't know exactly what would be involved, but there is a weekly feature on CBR, "The Line Is Drawn". It features (from what I can tell) what appear to be non-professional artists producing single panels of comicbook-like art relating to a weekly theme. If you could get involved with that, or something like it elsewhere, it could give you experience and hopefully positive feedback that could increase your self confidence. That could increase your motivation and positive attitude, and as a result your work ethic.
Perhaps there are also internships available in advertising or a related field that can turn into something that pays until you break into comics?
Best of luck, I hope things work out for you.

I just watched An American Werewolf in London. That scene where David first transforms into the werewolf is amazing. Who knew such effects could achieved in 80's cinema? Rick Baker won an Oscar for those special effects. The transformation scene was pretty ground breaking. I read that he actually left production on The Howling to work on An American Werewolf in London. Likewise, but anything will be a step up from "Need a Ricola Batman?" gruffness Bale threw in his last 2 films. Hard to believe anything could be worse that Bale's punched in the throat Batman voice. I had the same comment ↑ deleted from the CBR thread. Not to keep harping on Jonah but the over moderation is ridiculous.

I didn't purchase or read it today, but I noticed that Yoe/IDW has a new reprint title out today along the lines of Haunted Horror. This one's called Weird Love and it reprints pre(/post)-code romance comics.

Do they? I think most comic fans who know anything about the Golden Age are well aware that a large percentage of the creators involved were either Jewish or some other ethnic minority. Many of the critiques I have read have very specifically addressed the fact that the comic book witch hunts in the early 50's were the result of the white establishment reacting to the entertainment created by and for the lower classes.

that's my view too. jew does not = white at least as it has been used in europe. white has been specifically used to refer to germanic peoples at least historically in Britain, with hispanic, latin, slavs, celts, basques, magyars and others being specifically identified by their history rather than as white. i can think of no point in history in europe where jews where identified either by choice or not as white. Completely different origin, linguistic history, culture and history.
All negro comics looks interesting though - anyone seen a copy?

It's very, very rare, and quite expensive. My understanding is that it was probably only distributed in Philadelphia. Rumor is there was a second issue produced but never published, but nobody has ever seen any proof of this that I am aware of. The comic is discussed in a History Detectives segment from a couple years ago about the comic book Negro Romances. The segment can be seen here, starting at the 37:40 mark: www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/video/2030192391/

My wife grew up thinking of herself as "not white" because she was Jewish. Today it seems strange that anyone could look at her and see anything other than a white woman. She read a book recently, "Working Toward Whiteness", about the process that led to Jews, Slavs, etc. being accepted as "white" in America. Basically, as long as their skin was light enough and they agreed to join the white establishment in discriminating against darker-skinned groups, they were accepted. ironchimp, your message suggests that this may not have happened in Europe, or at least in Britain. Are non-germanic people not considered white in Britain today?
That reminds me of this joke - it went over well at Passover:
A year or two ago, the Chief Rabbi of the UK was knighted by the Queen. After the Queen tapped him on the shoulder with the sword, he said a short prayer in Hebrew. The Queen had never heard that done in a knighting ceremony before, so she turned to her Lord Chamberlain and asked, "why is this knight different from all other knights?"

PapaShogun, I would love to have a modicum of talent.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Don Rosa, the Duck master of the last 20 years or so. Stating that I wish with all my heart I could do what he does, he replied that anyone can do it if they want to badly enough and practice practice practice.
Talk with other people I art, not just comic art. If you want to, after starting wherever you need to, use that as leverage to start in comics. Marvel and DC won't look at anyone these days without them going through the ranks, from self published or small press, to the indies, and eventually wherever after that.
Work your passion. Start anywhere and go from there. Passion, more than anything, is the key to success.
Best of luck to you.

Still, 90% of Code discussions I've seen will focus on how EC comics were damaged by it with their horror books.
