I have a couple of meetings set up for next week to discuss opportunities outside of my professional field. One is to be a health insurance agent, while the other is to be a financial adviser. The former came to me through a friend from church who works for the company; he can't say enough good things about it and he recommended me to them since he knew I was looking. The latter was the result of a recruiter e-mail from the company, as they'd seen my resume online and felt I had the requisite skills to perform the job. Neither of those were something I was considering 3 months ago, but I've gotten to thinking about being able to have a more flexible schedule, work closer to home (or actually at home, in the case of the health insurance agent), and generally be more of my own boss in regard to making money based on how much effort I put in and not being beholden to company performance. It's always good to look outside of your usual profession in these situations, even if you ultimately don't go with them. Regarding having a more flexible schedule and working from home, I must say that I love those aspects of my job. It's a bit different because I'm a self-employed freelance musician essentially, but yeah, flexibility in my chosen profession is something I value tremendously. Hope things work out for you, Captain!

Came home to find out my computer wouldn't turn on. I'm wondering how many files I have that I might lose. My comic book boxes were backed up by email so, I'm not at a total loss there. I made an appointment with apple for tomorrow. I'm still bummed out, though.

In most cases, it's more cost effective to simply buy a new computer than fork over hundreds for a repair job.

My wife bought if for me a few years ago and she bought insurance, I don't expect to pay anything. I'm just annoyed at the whole thing.

Just got back from a trip to NYC. Of course, I visited the really important tourist sites, like this one: That's a bag of Archie back issues I'm hiding behind my back. There's a nice comic shop a few blocks away. You should've gave me a heads up, I could have taken you around a bit. I was off last week, too.

I don't mind paying more for a high-quality computer, but "high quality" should mean "won't just die on you after a few years". If you're on Mac, I definitely recommend using Time Machine. That means you'll never lose a file ever again (even one you accidentally delete!)

Damn man, that sucks.
Did they tell you if the hard drive is still in good order? If it is, you should be able to get everything you need off it if/when you get a new computer.

I just heard on the news that the Muslim community in St.-Étienne, France, which was home to one of the men (Adel Kermiche) involved in the murder at the church last week, refuses to give Kermiche a burial, on grounds that "what he did was reprehensible, and he's no longer a part of the community. (...) We will not taint Islam with this person."
I feel like that's a powerful statement to make by the St.Étienne Mosque, a gesture that underlines the desire for all French citizens in these turmoiled times to live together in harmony, and it takes some wind out of the sails of cynics who believe the Muslim community 'as a whole' either turns a blind eye or even takes jihadis and fundamendalists under protection.
I write this as Schiphol Airport here in Holland is on high alert for a possible terrorist threat.
