Is anyone else having issues? I've been having some trouble with podbean the last few days, but I was able to upload and download it okay myself.
Edit: the whole podbean site seems to be down at the moment.

I listened to the first ten minutes or so the day it appeared. Aside from being too busy to listen to the rest of it, I didn't have any problem.

Just listened to this. Excellent job, as always and really interesting to hear you and Hoosier X continue your discussion of this era of Avengers comics. Makes me want to dig out my Avengers Marvel Masterworks and re-read these issues.

Just listened to this. Excellent job, as always and really interesting to hear you and Hoosier X continue your discussion of this era of Avengers comics. Makes me want to dig out my Avengers Marvel Masterworks and re-read these issues. I have the Marvel Masterworks with #11 to #20 and I read #15 to #20 over and over! I read #21 to #24 almost as often. |

Listened to part 2 this morning. Wonderful discussion guys. And yes, this period of of the Kooky Quartet is very much a part of the time it was created in during the early stages of the MU. It truly wouldn't work as well in the 70's on and yet for those of us who can remember the "simpler" days this run of issues holds a special place in our hearts and minds. It was odd, quirky, silly and downright dumb at times but there are more good moments than bad to be found. Especially enjoyed the Quartet's interactions together during the quiet instances before/after adventures and while they bickered and constantly try to upstage one another they pull together as a team every time. This was the start of what made the Avengers so much different and enjoyable to read than Justice League or other teams. I think Fantastic Four for me was likely the only team with stronger character interaction and more memorable stories. Whats coming up for 2018 Crimebuster? |

I don't want to announce anything until it's recorded, because these things sometimes fall through despite everyone's best efforts. But I currently have a couple discussions lined up that I think are going to be really great, and as soon as they are recorded, I'll update the Info and Details thread with the info and details.  There's currently one more episode already recorded, which is with Outrajs discussing what it's like to be a new collector these days. We also discuss the story that first got her interested in comics as a kid, the Wonder Woman: Space Pirate story by William Messner-Loeb that ran in Wonder Woman #66-72. I'm hoping to have that up two weeks from today! |

Another excellent episode--many thanks Crimebuster and Hoosier X . Some thoughts on the issues you covered: It strikes me that Swordsman was initially set up to be a hero a la Hawkeye--look at that #19 cover, he's front and center and not in an antagonistic stance as say, Power Man is on #21-22. Plus Swordy is Tony Stark-handsome and not thuggish-looking as PM or other villains usually are. I took a quick look at a couple of post- #19-20 lettercols and it seems the readers recognize that Swordy is not purely evil; he's even deemed a "lovable villain" by one reader. Strange IMO that this path was not explored or followed up on until the Englehart era (sure, there was Avengers #100, but for the most part after #20 Swordy settled into being a run-of-the-mill villain until Englehart). But I guess in 1965/6 Stan was having second thoughts about a team that relied too much on weaponry (Cap, Hawkeye, and potentially Swordy). It's likely Stan felt he needed to beef up the team by adding some brute strength instead, which is why Giant-Man/Goliath was brought back and then immediately featured prominently on all the covers until Herc took over, as you both noted. I liked the Swordsman's attraction to Wanda (and in #29, true to form, he's trying to impress Natasha). Y'know, I wished that Englehart had used the attraction to Wanda during the Mantis saga (which I only read a few years ago). Swordy--in retaliation for Mantis setting her sights on the Vision--could have turned his attentions to Wanda. What can I say, I was a soap opera fan! Anyway, loved the Heck art, the inking by Romita and Wood, and the great Kirby covers during this run. About #25's cover: I know I've mentioned this before so forgive the repetition, but I always get a kick out of seeing those Kirby figures from that cover grafted into a panel in Avengers Annual #1.  I would love to hear more from you guys--I think you may be underestimating how numerous and fervent we followers of the Kooky Quartet*** are. ***also the KQ with Hank 'n' Jan, Natasha and Herc--great era! |
