SyFy Wire reports on a Hollywood Reporter story that Archie will be launching a new Dick Tracy comic this spring. It is supposed to be a gritty crime drama with noir elements and set in the early years of Tracy's investigative career (the working title is rumored to be Tracy Begins, but that is not official), so kind of a Year One thing in line with the reimagining of their other properties Archie has been doing. Sounds like it could be interesting or a complete train wreck. -M

Is it a period piece? Is the art in the Chester Gould style? The answers to those questions will determine if I try it or not.
Cei-U! I summon further info!

The article didn't say anything about it being a period piece or not. The art in the article was not by the series artist-one was by Francavilla which will probably be a cover or variant for the series, but looking at Pitilli's art it has a modern indy vibe so I don't think it will be in the Gould style, but I can't say for certain. -M

If that's how it's going to look, I have zero interest.

Looking over the article I missed a tidbit, it will be a period piece, but its set post-WWII not when the Tracy strip actually started.

Big Tracy fan, but not interested from the few pieces I've seen, which is sad, cause I'd like to like it.

Will they be able to average more than one issue every 18 months?
I may give it a try.

Yeah, that art posted doesn't thrill me, but I'll probably look at it at least.

Tracy should be a stylized rendition of an updated Gould style. I realize that the cartoony newspaper version may hold very little attraction to contemporary readers and many may only know Tracy from the movie and only us "old timers" have an affinity for classic Tracy but this "version" seems likely to fail since this looks rather mundane. The art looks okay, just not very enticing. And is it just me or does Tracy look just a little bit Asian?

It reminds me of when Seaboard or whoever "updated" Popeye a few years back, drawing him semi-realistically instead of in the familiar Segar style. It was awful enough to put me off me spinach.
Cei-U! Sometimes the image *is* the character!

Cei-U! Sometimes the image *is* the character! And if not in comics, where else?! Not that I think every artist has to reproduce exactly what the previous one did, but I would like to see them try to capture the essence of the character within the bounds of their personal style, whatever might be. Obviously even if they do that there's no guarantee that I or any individual reader will like the results, but it's a start.

If the story sounds decent I'll give it a try.

If the story sounds decent I'll give it a try. Same here, i will at least give it a look. Art is ok and good story will help me decide if to continue more than an issue or two...

Oopsie, looks like someone at Tribune goofed and forgot to check for pre-existing licensing delas for Dick Tracy in comic form because this got cancelled and pulled form Archie due to a licensing error on Tribune's part. -M
