11. Hookjaw - Action  Life sure is simple when you're eleven and Jaws is the biggest thing since bubblegum was invented. Big Muthaluvin Shark hunting, taunting, and chowing down on anyone fool enough to get in the ocean. Now I can hear youse now...not a villain youse say...well he (she???) sho aint no good guy or even an anti-hero. From the mighty one himself (Kurt, not Tharg) I give you "For our purposes here, I'm defining a super-villain as any antagonist, costumed or not, superpowered or not, from a comic book, comic strip, or graphic novel." Oh sure youse say, but as a ripoff of Jaws his design originates in the movies. Well nuh uh...he's got a giant freaking hook man...how cool is that. Well Piss Pot Paul I hear youse say (getting all personal and shit cos youse losing), how bout the simple fact he aint bloody hooman...to which I says...d'oh...but...but...hhrrmmmmm what about the Living Tribunal? Now all those cosmic embodythings of cosmic ideathingies, how human are they? BOOM  ...and like what eleven year old cares about any of that, its a freaking cool ass shark man.

Mrs. Pruneface (aka "Ana"), Dick Tracy comic strip (July 16-September 26, 1943) No nose, empty eyes, a ghoulish predatory grin... Mrs. Pruneface and Crimebuster 's Madame Satan remind me that I'd been considering Fantomah. But then I realized she was not a villain, so she's off my list   |

I don't know why Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch wouldn't be allowed, as long as you are using designs from their villainous days. Yeah, I don't get that either. Quicksilver was definitely a villain to begin with, so, as long as the costume used was worn during the villainous phase of his career (which I think the green costume was), that should be fine as far as the rules go, right? Cei-U! can you clarify? |

I've been away from my computer all day so I wasn't aware of the misunderstanding that has occurred. I did not say that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch weren't eligible, only that they couldn't be named as a single entry because their costumes are too different from each other. So Mech is welcome to change today's entry back to Quicksilver if he wants to.

My #11 – JOHNNY SORROW  A pretty straightforward look, right? A guy in a suit. The gloves are a nice touch, and sure the suit and mask are red, giving him a sinister but powerful look. And the mask has subdued features, making him look cold and inhuman. But really, just a down-to-earth look, until you look more closely. Look at the head.  DUDE AIN’T GOT NO HEAD! Seriously, that is one deeply disturbing image. The mask just floats there, attached to nothing. That’s wrong, it’s unnatural, and looking at him makes you think (What the hell?) at the same time it repels you (Seriously, what the hell?!) I honestly don’t remember that much about the guy. I know I’ve read some stories with him fighting the Justice League, and that’s about it. But that visual has stuck with me. That’s the mark of a successful design. |

The Fire-Haired KarlaAquaman #24 (1965) Karla considers herself a freak due to her living, flaming hair, which she obtained as the result of an "industrial accident." She takes up with a couple of other powered-up outcasts--an Invisible Un-Thing and the Fisherman--to do battle with Aquaman, Mera and Aqualad. Her costume is basic but when you're drawn by Nick Cardy who cares? He outdid himself when it came to that hair--she's like the love child of Johnny Storm and Medusa.  Even though Karla is the leader of The Terrible Trio, she seems more misunderstood than evil. There's a lot of fighting and name-calling but by the end of the story she's forged an understanding with Aquaman. From what I can tell this was Karla's only appearance, which is a pity IMO--she has such a great visual.  {Spoiler}

I misread your post about their eligibility and thought Quickie and SW wren't allowed because they've been around much longer as heroes rather than villains and when they're thought of, it's generally as being on the good guys' side. Afraid I gave Mecha some bad advice. Sorry! (Psst Mecha-- this means you-know-who is OK too.) |

From the frosty fields of 1960's USSR... Day Two - Crimson Dynamo (original) by Don Heck and Lee/Bernstein  Love the bulkiness of the costume compared to the still-bulky-but-sleeker look of the Iron Man gold armor. A subtle comment on the state of advancement of western science to that of the "backwards" commies. Also liked the redesign by the best IM artist, George Tuska! |

11. The Phantom Blot  Because I always go for "simple" rather than pouched, Leifeldian complexity.... And it doesn't get much simpler! Because "reverse ghost" is even scarier than regular ghost. Because for a Mickey Mouse villain, P. B. here comes off as genuinely creepy... But can also be played for comedy when the need arises. But mostly... One of the very few times he was unmasked, he bore the ghoulish, horrible visage of.... Walt Disney! |

My #11 – JOHNNY SORROW I thought of him too. I've never actually read him, but I remember flipping through JSA back when those issues first came out and finding his image striking. Johnny Sorrow was very late removal from my list. I love the character, but I ultimately decided he was too similar to another of my choices (Who? Wait and see) so I reluctantly removed him to allow for a greater variety of looks in my choices. |
