So far, my list has included a Jack Kirby goddess and a Kirby robot. It's probably no surprise, then, that it also features a Kirby monster. There are dozens of creatures I could've picked, especially from pre-hero Marvel, and I very nearly settled on either Fin Fang Foom or the original Groot before I recalled my childhood fascination with one particular other. Thus, I give you 6. Dragon Man He isn’t as spectacular as some, or as frightening, or even as large, but there is something so sympathetic, even endearing about the android creation of Dr. Gregson Gilbert that I found myself drawing entire stories with Dragon Man as the protagonist. Not only does the visual perfectly realize the implications of his name, but Kirby somehow gave the beast a rough innocence that Stan picked up on. The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe declared that Dragon Man had the mental capacity of a dog, and when you look at the body language and facial expressions Jack gave him, especially during the original Inhumans story arc, that feeling is absolutely there. Dragon Man has since been drawn by everyone from John Buscema to John Byrne to June Brigman (and even by some folks whose initials aren’t “JB”) and they’ve all managed to recapture the character’s essence. It takes a strong design to be that bulletproof. Cei-U! I summon the 100-pound bag of Kibbles ‘n’ Bits! |

#6. Brainiac (Silver Age)What fascinates me about this design is that it's simultaneously underdeveloped and over the top. The human face (barring the green skin) and pink shirt don't seem reminiscent of an intergalactic alien conqueror at all, yet the strange headdress and utility belt are straight Silver Age sci-fi. In fairness, it's a design that only ever really looked good under Curt Swan's pencil, but it's that weird juxtaposition of contrasting elements that gives it an uncanny vibe. Brainiac looks almost human, but something's just...off.

6. Galactus What is there to say about Galactus? I mean, is he even really a villain? He's more like a force of nature, really. But given how many times he's almost destroyed the Earth, I'm gonna go with "yes", he is a villain. Of course, whether a celestial, God-like being that needs to feed on planets in order to live is any more morally "evil" than an Anteater who feeds on an ant-hill is a question worth mulling over. But in spite of that philosophical concern, it's clear that within the context of the Marvel Universe, Galactus was definitely meant to be regarded as a villain, especially during the Silver and Bronze Ages. I really like the cerise, blue and turquoise colour scheme of Galactus's costume, along with his powerful looking gauntlets and "skirt" around his waist. But it's the brilliant, eye-catching "wingnut" helmet design that really makes him so memorable for me. He doesn't even need to be as massive as he is to look cool; if the character was only 5 foot, he'd still be on my list. Is Galactus Jack Kirby's best ever character design? I certainly think so.

6, Loki Another Jim Steranko Masterpiece and he's the best of the best in designing Loki of the details that he undertook as the nemesis of Mighty Thor! ... I just can't believe how much details that he puts into this classic look shown here. I'm using this picture as a good example of his brilliant use of lines and the complexity of Loki's outfit that he chose to make him perfect as the God of Mischief here. His face is just pure evil and with a deterime look to destroy the God of Thunder, Thor! You just can't go wrong with it! |

Mooonstone I liked this design so much I totally ripped it off for a character when I and a couple friends made our own comics as kids (though I did add a cape.)

The Seventh Day of Christmas Santa brings to me:
The Masked Marauder! 1st seen in Daredevil #16 in May of 1966. Don't you just love that name and how it rolls off the tongue dripping evil villainous intent? It even has that wonderful wrestling intention: here he comes now down the turnbuckle to steal your wallets: the Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasked Maaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaader!!!! And yes here we are again with classic Purple villain colors to accent DD's crimson union suit. Love the Goggles that will blind the hero (though kind of useless against DD) and his arrogance as a leader of the criminal types when he consistently gets beaten.

On the seventh day of Christmas, Dan Adkins gave to me... #6 Nebulos, master of the Planet Perilous!  Cei-U already introduced us to this fine creation, but he deserves to be seen again! A good Dr. Strange villain should look weird. They should make us go "what the %$# is THAT???". They should look like something out of a dream. And Nebulos is all that! Look at him floating above a desert planet as if gravity had no hold on him... Look at his asymmetric shape, which seems to be made of stone or some other hard material but is also partly human-looking... but how weird is it to look like a partly erased sketch? Nebulos almost looks like a sculpture that some demented artist left partly encased in its block of marble after going crazy, as in a Lovecraft story. Or like a being who was partly torn to pieces and stabbed with a thorny staff, evoking constant pain and unease (although he doesn't seem to mind). In any case, he's the kind of fellow who inhabits nightmares, as is appropriate. |

6. LumiyaMy first issue of Star Wars was #95, so suffice it to say Lumiya scared the pants off me. The design is so cool! I actually didn't know until researching her for this list that she was brought back many years later and became a major cult figure in the extended universe, but I'm sure I know why - because some other kid that was blown away by the design brought her back once they were in the position to do so.
