I did a search & could not find a thread on this. I'm not talking about sidekicks like Robin. Or partners like The Falcon. Characters like Lois Lane or Jarvis. You can do a list if you want.
Mine:
1. Alfred. His presence in a Batman comic, movie or TV show just makes it better. He usually gets to say what he thinks even if Batman will hate it. Without him Batman stories would be very different. Wouldn't we all want an Alfred in our lives?
2. Foggy Nelson. I think Matt would be dead by now without Foggy. Foggy keeps him balanced. Foggy is the one that can speak his mind to Matt and Matt will listen. Again DD stories would be very different without Foggy in them.
3. Lois. Mary Jane. These two above all other spouses have been incredible to be part of their husband's lives.

I love the book Invaders and its features Toro and that's one of the many reasons that I loved that book. In all the Green Hornet's books that I'm aware of ... another one would be Kato his trusted sidekick would be another Supporting Character that I enjoy reading about.
I like Edwin Jarvis from the Avengers/Iron Man as well and Jimmy Olsen from Superman too.
Jim Gordon, Robin, and Batgirl all are important clogs of Batman/Bruce Wayne legacy and that make Bruce a human and when you add Leslie Thompkins into the mix of things ... she makes Bruce even more human and that's why I liked this character in Batman's life.

Agree with Foggy and MJ 100%. Not so sure on Toro, I personally found have found him to be a pain all throughout the Invaders I have read so far. I generally just don't like sidekicks though...
I will throw Jonah Jameson into the mix...his ever lasting hatred of Spider-Man and his hard attitude towards Parker have been the basis of some great stories, and even greater side stories.
As a comic reader who has read next nothing modern, does JJJ ever learn Parker is Spider-Man? What is his response?

Well...there were three supporting characters who made my list when we did Favorite Characters low these many years ago.
Dian Belmont. An absolutely fascinating character as portrayed in Sandman Mystery Theater. Complex, intelligent. Amazing.
Robbie Robertson. Perfect foil for J. Jonah Jameson. Surrogate Uncle for Peter Parker. I've always thought he was in on Peter's secret, but didn't lead on.
Jim Corrigan. Okay. Probably doesn't qualify. But he was far more interesting than The Spectre in the Ostrander/Mandrake series.

I'd have to go with a supporting character so strong that he warranted his own series for close to 20 years - Jimmy Olsen.
I love the fact that he could be turned into a Bizarro version of himself or find himself accidentally sent to The Phantom Zone and still his biggest concern is not being late for work. These adventures were just hiccups in an ordinary day for him - events to kill time on the way from Point A to Point B - and you know what else he took in stride? The fact that he had his own fan club. Did he ever ask why there even was Jimmy Olsen Fan Club (actually, several of them)? No, because it never occurred to him that there could be anything unusual about there being a Fan Club with a charter and dues and goals all devoted to himself. It wasn't even conceit on his part - he was just that oblivious to how fantastically unusual his life was.
I'll also second J Jonah Jameson and Robbie Robertson (if Alfred Pennyworth is the ultimate Gentleman's Gentleman, then Robbie Robertson is the ultimate Supporting Character's Supporting Character).
Others:
Die Fledermaus - A superhero whose greatest power seems to be avoiding being a superhero.
Golden Age Lois Lane - Sure it's cool seeing Superman take on a roomful of thugs, but it's something else entirely when Lois Lane does it (often triggered by outrage at Clark Kent's seeming willingness to let an injustice go unaddressed).
Aunt May - the cause of so many of Peter Parker's neuroses.
Perry White - especially when played by John Hamilton. "Well don't mind me, Mr. Kent, why I'm only the editor of this paper. I would hate to think that my expecting you to get any work done while you're here interferes from what must be a tiring day of disappearing on a whim whenever you feel like it!"

Toss up between Ted Knight and The Shade, in Starman.
Beau La Duke, in the Scout series.
Commissioner Dolan, in the Spirit. Ellen was a pretty good one, too.
Sue Dibny
Big Barda
Phony and Smiley Bone
Elrod the Albino and the Roach, in Cerebus
Raul the Cat, in American Flagg

Well, I usually go with Mary Jane Watson ten times out of ten in this sort of discussion, so I won't be any different today. It's not an exciting - or original - choice I know, but I grew up reading ASM so it seems normal as MJ was such an integral part of those Spider-Man stories.
For an honourable mention in the best supporting character catagory, I'd go with Foggy Nelson.

I have been reading some of my old Invaders books and I have about 8 of them and I'm seeing what you have said about Toro and I have to say this ... you were right about that. I wasn't thinking clearly on that and now I'm seeing what you said is very true.

As a comic reader who has read next nothing modern, does JJJ ever learn Parker is Spider-Man? What is his response? He learned when Spider-Man revealed his identity to the world during Civil War. I think he had a heart attack.
