Coates writes in the Atlantic about why he is taking on the challenge of writing Captain America. He will be the new writer with Alex Ross on covers and Lenil Francis Yu on art for the new series launching on July 4th. The article offers a few insights on Coates approach to writing in general and comics specifically as he speaks to what about writing Captain America appeals to him and more importantly what about it scares him. I don't pick up a lot of series as individual issues as they come out, this might become one, but I am not sure yet. -M

I'm pretty excited about this, as I read the first three TPB of Coates' Black Panther series and was impressed by his work. Definitely will be giving it a trial run.

To me the most interesting part is that there is a serious article about comics in Atlantic.

To me the most interesting part is that there is a serious article about comics in Atlantic. That probably has more to do with the fact that Ta-Nehisi Coates writes for The Atlantic as a "serious journalist" than any interest The Atlantic has in covering comics.

The first issue had a lot of promise but it went downhill pretty quickly, and now Waid has sent Cap into the future seven years after again being frozen in ice, this time by the despotic ruler of the United States, a man named King Baby. Yeah, it's what you think... I wrote a longer review of the most recent issue in the Off The Racks 2/14/18 thread, but the series overall is not good. It's better than Nick Spencer's run, but that's not too high a bar to jump. As well, I just do not like Samnee's art, so getting Yu on the book would be a win even if Waid were still writing it.

Yesterday at my LCS, I looked at the Marvel preview book and it appears Waid is writing at least up until issue #702, but your point is valid. He went into this thinking it would be one thing and when Cebulski took over, things changed.

He went into this thinking it would be one thing and when Cebulski took over, things changed. Samnee is off the book after this arc, but Waid is sticking around until Coates takes over. Samnee's contract with Marvel was up and he knew going in he wasn't going to renew because he wanted to move on to other opportunities, so he was only going to do a set number of issues of Cap. Waid did the book because he wanted to do one last project with Samnee (after DD and Widow) before he left Marvel with no expectations that he would stay on after Samnee was gone, so any speculation their run was cut short or they gave up after finding out they were being taken off the book is nonsense and not based on what actually happened. Neither had an expectation it was going to be a long run, they had a story Samnee wanted to do before he left Marvel and Waid had a rep as a classic super-hero guy so wa sa good fit coming off the Secret Empire stuff to put Cap right in the minds of hardcore fans with the short run. -M
