It's about time we got rid of the whole sorry institution, now that the Queen is dead. It's an offensive and wholly unnecessary anachronism at this point. The total absence of any British royal family is something that I'd love to get used to. Yeah, esp. since you're gonna have Chuck's picture on your money now...

(...) It's why I always stayed on the best of terms with the secretaries and the custodians during my teaching days. That's nice to hear. My mom (r.i.p.) spent the last 12 years before she retired working as a school custodian.

What if you just kept the Corgis? They'd be cheaper to care for and they are more popular. By the same token, Larry the Downing Street Cat is a more stable presence at Number 10; he could meet with the Corgis, in place of the Prime Minister. Humans had their chance; let the animals have a go. I'd back similar ideas here!

November 22, 1963. A day that will live in infamy. -M The day the Sixties began. On a somewhat similar note, I've always liked this Philip Larkin verse from his poem Annus Mirabilis (it's a slightly more Anglo-centric take on the dawn of the Sixties)... "Sexual intercourse began In nineteen sixty-three (which was rather late for me) - Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban And the Beatles' first LP."

January 1st certainly appears to be an eventful date as far as the last several decades are concerned.
The European Economic Community was founded 65 years ago today.
British Railways came into force 75 years ago today.
Czechoslovakia separated into the Czech Republic & Slovakia 30 years ago today.
And that was just some of the things covered on the news earlier. I’m sure many other things happened that day!

Yeah, times were definitely different, I didn't even live in a seat belt required state here in the US until 1990 when I went to New Mexico. As a little kid in the 70's I remember my family didn't use seat belts, and then it was probably in the early 80's they decided it was safer and we all started doing so (even though again it wasn't law).

My sister wasn’t pleased with me once when I insisted she wear a seatbelt while she sat in the back. I wasn’t being pedantic or authoritarian, but I never forgot reading about a person who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt while sitting in the back - and after a crash, he suffered great nose damage after being thrown forward, his nose hitting the driver’s seat hard.
Since this is a historical thread, when I think about this topic, I am amazed at how different many things were decades ago, e.g. tobacco advertising (“This is the cigarette that your doctor smokes!”) and asbestos mattresses being sold.
