Now then, as I'm a fan of the DC comics runs of Star Trek I thought I'd add this as well. some may not recall but during the years between Star trek III and IV Kirk and his officers were given the Excelsior to the purpose of working the bugs out of her.

Now then, you might wonder "Wait, if this is between III and IV then where's Spock?." Answer: Captain Spock was given his own command the USS Surak a science vessel (like the Grissom in STIII) tasked with studying the effects of the Genesis wave in order to determine whether or not there were any dangerous after-effects.
