Maybe there's already a thread about this... small press comics by authors who are just starting out and figuring out what they are doing. I have one that probably no one else has, since it was done by a kid at my high school. He was in eleventh grade when it came out in 1993 on his own custom label: He is now an assistant professor at Monserrat College of Art, so he stuck with it through the years: My sister used to carpool with him; he was always drawing, she said. Anybody you (sorta kinda) know who pursued art?

Well there's this guy I knew who does these sci-fi comics in French called Le Bras d'Orion... but I don't know whatever became of the guy... Roquefort Raider then there's the guys (and gals) at Twilight Star Studios... and I just happen to be married to the colorist of this cover... and then there's all my friends who do indy comics that I see at shows all the time... and just a heads up, just because it's self-published or an indy book, doesn't necessarily mean it's a vanity project, it just means that it's beneath Diamond's notice and they serve as gatekeeper to distribution to the market. Vanity publishing in the book field is a little different than self-publishing comics. -M

Lots of vanity book authors see themselves as aspiring indie authors who maybe will get noticed by the big leagues.

Hmm well there's lots of established terms in the industry for it already.... Small Press and Alternative Comics are the two most common and even have shows devoted to them... SPACE in Columbus Ohio The Alternative Press Expo (APE)TCAF Toronto Comics Art Festival Cartoon Crossraods ColumbusICE (Independent Creators Expo) in Dayton etc. There is a thriving comics community that is producing a wide variety of material that Diamond chooses to ignore because it is too labor intensive for them to process these books with smaller print runs and they have no competition so they have no incentive to do anything that isn't quick, easy and profitable for them. They are facebook groups and websites devoted to networking small press creators, there are websites that specialize in selling digital downloads and print on demand copies of the books, printers who specialize in working with these creators to publish the books, etc. It is a thriving cottage industry that exists outside the worldview of the Wednesday Warriors and the dying market that services them. -M

Todd McFarlane (vanity thine name is Todd) lives here in Ahwatukee, Arizona and I have seen him several times at his own local toy shop he used to own and several times around town at different LCS. Usually McFarlane isn't very talkative during signings but should you get him focused on something he likes and is truly passionate about or if he is selling something you can't get him to stop talking!
Brian Pulido also lives here in Scottsdale (i think) and am always seeing him around town at comic events and he is always present at the big Phoenix Comic-Fest each year during Memorial Day with a booth. Brian has a great energy and memory and can actually remember faces quite well and he will make time to talk with folks he knows and remembers during sales or appearances.
Don Newton lived here in Scottsdale, Arizona back in the early 80's before his death. Had a casual meet and greet at a LCS in '82 and while talking with him and actually got an invite with a few others there to come visit him at his home. Went and spent a Saturday afternoon watching him work and talking about comic books. Very personable and genuine nice guy who never had the fame/attention he deserved in his time.

I pursued art. Have been a professional artist in various fields most of my adult life. Even did a piece or two for comics.

Was Foglio drawing a lot back then?

Was Foglio drawing a lot back then? Oh, yeah--constantly sketching with a rapidograph. He did a fanzine cover w/o any pencil sketching--straight in ink. He was probably 18 or so.

I think the big difference is that self published comics have a long tradition in the field, while self-published novels are rarely seen as an end in and of themselves.
