My point being that Pieta covers predated Crisis #7 by a lot.

I am not sure if it was here or the other place, but one of the cover content topics at some point was even Pieta homage covers. Crisis 7 is just one in a long line of such covers, itself an homage not an original composition.

Perez even has said he was homaging this cover... when he did the Crisis cover, so if you are copying someone who copied something else, what are you really copying/recreating? -M

I would guess Fantastic Four #1. John Byrne alone has homaged it many times.
Doesn't the holder have to be seated for it to count as a "pieta"? As well as the position of the deceased? I think otherwise it's just someone holding someone else. The Death of Captain Marvel would count, but not that Crisis cover IMO.

As a source, that's a candidate for the most recreated or source of comic book covers.
As important and well-known Action Comics #1 is, its surprising that its not at the top of the list of the most imitated cover. Oh, there have been numerous homage covers, but I think I've seen just as many of Detective Comics #27, various Golden Age Batman covers, The Amazing Spider-Man #50, etc.

FF #1's gotta be up there, too. I would think Action is probably the most though. That seems like that sort of thing Brian Cronin would write a column about

Bryne also apparently likes this pose:

I think that "joke" was more about the analogous powers of the Legionnaires and the FF (not to mention Gladiator & Superman).

Probably nothing beats Action Comics #1, but Avengers #4 has been homaged frequently as well.

I'm pretty sure Action Comics # 1 is the most homaged cover ever
