I first heard this when I was an undergrad while home on Christmas break while driving and coming upon by chance. I spent the next 25 or so years searching for it to listen to it again without much luck until the advent of youtube when I managed to find it in early 2016. Since then, because I liked it after listening to it, it pops up in my recommended feed every so often. Tonight was one such time, so I listened to it again despite it not being the holiday season.

On the sixth anniversary of his death I'm dedicating todays listening to the late great Guy Clark.

I love starting Sunday mornings with a little Henry Mancini...still one of my artists of all time. It just doesn't get any easier on the ears.

I've been listening to a lot of live albums from my favorite jazz artists. For some reason, I've tended to avoid live jazz albums in the past, which is strange since jazz is arguably better as a form of live music than it is on record. In some cases, it's the only way to fully appreciate a jazz artist, especially guys who recorded in the 78 era.
Other than that, I've been listening to 80s thrash albums, some 2010s hip hop, and one of my favorite Japanese bands, The Blankey Jet City.

Lately I've been hooked on a micro-genre called "Mallsoft", instrumental music intended to evoke the rather soulless background music associated with 80's mall culture. It's a close relative to vaporwave and synthwave, and a good companion to viewing liminal space photographs. First I've heard of any of those genres, but the thinking reminds me a little of how Brian Eno talked about his Music for Airports - deliberately constructed background music that you don't have to pay attention to and doesn't distract the conscious mind from whatever it's trying to do.

There are some fascinating micro-genres out there that exploit similar intentions. "Corporatewave" and "Officewave" are similar ones, designed to evoke the manipulative sounds of corporate training and promotional videos' background music. I bought Eno's Music for Airports when it came out and--somewhat perversely--I can still "play it" in my head despite its goal of being ephemeral and avoiding focused attention. When I was in college, I learned to study to atonal and avant-garde electronic music--Cage, Schoenberg, Stockhausen--since it couldn't distract me with catchy melodies and lyrics. It filled the soundspace but allowed room for differential equations in my head.
