AstroPuppees' debut from '96, You Win the Bride. I've had it for at least a year but am listening to it for the first time -- very engaging.

Do they also sing the song about the "douche in the night"? Nope that's Manfred Mann's Earth Band covering Blinded by the Light, a Springsteen song and it's supposed to be Deuce in the night like little deuce coup but the boy's in ole MM had some annunciation problems.... -M I knew the song but had to look up the band. MMs version is what I "grew up" or heard and was an adult before I heard someone tell me what they were really saying. (Though I knew it wasn't "douche" because slang like that wouldn't have allowed to be listened to in the house by my folks.) I was trying figure out how Dan gets "selling cocaine" out of Toto's Africa. Being a child/ teen of the 80's I heard that song A LOT. |

The song that got me interested in TOTO
I was interested in those guys, too. Interested in seeing them jailed for crimes against the ears of humanity. A quick trip to wiki tells me your influence is short reached in judicial system, or perhaps the drug dealing song changed your mind. The source cites: "The band has released a total of 17 albums, and have sold over 35 million albums to date. The group was honored with several Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009" Apparently, they got big. Who'd knew? Anyway, that was then and what am I listening to now? A band (that plays no instrument) made up of three Female singers (but it isn't a trio) and resembles a boy band (only one guy though, most of the time scantily clad). Later we learned he wasn't even singing the male parts. That was done by the producer... and the female vocals were also done by only one of the girls. (overstaffed? surplus? or the real singers didn't have the "looks" to capture the audience? Hmm... it sounds familiar. Right? *cough-Milli Vanilli-cough*) I remember, back in Yugoslavia the media was set on fire when Bobby Farrell married a girl from Bosnia (Yasmina Saban) I think later, he almost set her on fire. All I have to say about that is, Ra Ra Rasputin (which I think is all I know of theirs, though I have a vague memory of reading a Rolling Stone reference back in the mid-'70s to an apparent cover by them of Jimmy Cliff's "By the Waters of Babylon").

All I have to say about that is, Ra Ra Rasputin Speaking of which, a morbid fact: Bobby Farrel died on the exact anniversary date when this influential Russian figure was murdered and in the same city, no less. Yikes. |
