I'd almost be tempted to turn that question around and ask how Bowie ever did succeed in the US while being so out there, when other avant-garde pop acts like Roxy Music were never accepted to the same degree. I've thought about this a lot myself. It fascinates me. Not to sound like a music snob, but it's almost as if Bowie should have been too artistically sophisticated for the mainstream to latch onto...but they did. Granted he didn't become a superstar until the early 80's, but he was still a huge star. Having become a fan of Roxy Music, it puzzles me that they didn't eventually break big in the U.S., but I think that might have had something to do with the public not getting Ferry's pop-culture satire and generally not getting the concept of the band. I think Bowie had a sort of space-age theatricality that appealed to people who liked the spectacle's of Alice Cooper and Kiss, even though he was a much more serious artist. Every now and then the mainstream latches onto a critically acclaimed artist that otherwise would have been relegated to cult status. REM always struck me as an odd popular choice for stardom. I think they more than deserved it, of course, but they almost seemed "too good" for their level of fame. I agree and I think you pretty much answered your own question as to the difference between Bowie and Roxy. I'd only add that we sometimes forget that Bowie was never a huge mainstream success on the level of an REM until, arguably, the 80s when he deliberately made an effort to project a mainstream image and produce the music to match. In the Ziggy era, I think he was recognised as a hugely important artist by critics and by serious fans but not by the AM radio audience, which we might take as an indicator of the mainstream.

I remember watching this on TV in 1973. "1980 Floor Show" was the name of the production; it was made in 1973 and Bowie sings a lot about 1984.

I wonder who that female singer was who did the duet with him on the "I Got You, Babe" cover. (edit: looked it up and it was Marianne Faithfull, should have recognised her voice). With one or two exceptions, pretty much every Bowie album up to and including Heroes is special to me in one way or another, but Diamond Dogs (which contains the "1984" track) particularly so because it was the first one I bought for myself, though I had previously listened to borrowed copies of Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust.

Love and happiness right here: I love that song! One of my favorites from the underappreciated Beach Boys album Smiley Smile.

As far as I know Portishead - Third was their last album. While her voice is just as wonderful the music is quite different to me. I've listened to it a few times on youtube, but not enough to buy. I wouldn't describe it as bad, but it's not Dummy or Portishead. Adam- I am watching "The Returned" (original/French version), and I am pretty damn sure that they keep playing the opening chords to a Portishead song, but I will have to check my albums to see which one. When I figure it out, I will post up the song.
