Great subject this week again. Starlin was one of the best cover artists of the 70s, IMO. Loved the painted covers from Marvel's 1970s magazines (this one is from October, 1977). This is such a standout from Starlin's usual work. I dunno--I always thought the Hulk looked unusually cartoonish on this cover. Almost a proto-Shrek.

I think Starlin wanted the Hulk to look like a true beast; the deep-set, shadowy eyes, and bushy brow are consistent with his Hulk from the Marvel Super Heroes cover, which give the Hulk a truly menacing glare. Starlin's Hulk looks as insane as Steranko's--a Hulk no one was going to reach with reason.

All these years I thought that was a Carmine Infantino cover. I always looked at the MM figure and it looked like it. Well done.

Jim covering a P Craig Russell story, what a 70's love child that would make, did they ever draw together, pencil/ink that is... Detective Comics #481 & 482 featured a Murders in the Rue Morgue homage, with script and layouts by Starlin and finished art by PCR.

I know this isn't a comic cover, strictly, but I've always really liked it, so here goes. We addressed this a while back, cause I brought it up. It's a COMIC fanzine, with awesome covers by comic book artists, and as such is allowed. Great freaking cover ! I'm very glad you posted it outsider

I've always loved this cover. The Hulk's eyes are so threatening in a way similar Ditko's version of the character from his Tales to Astonish run. For better or for worse, I'll always remember it as the picture on the lunch box.

Love Ms. Marvel! So happy I picked up her series a couple years ago cuz her first issue and others have gotten crazy expensive. I also own the above issue as a double cover!!

GCD says the letters page in Ms Marvel #17 credited the cover to Starlin and Josef Rubinstein, with the original artwork showing amendments to Ms Marvel by John Romita. Rubinstein is said to have confirmed the background figures were amended by Alan Weiss.
