I feel like I could see Mysterio adapted to the big screen in a way that would make sense to main stream audiences unfamiliar with the character. Quentin Beck could still be "a special effects wizard working for a major Hollywood studio". You could tie him into The Tinkerer like in the comics as well giving him ties to the Vulture in the MCU. Maybe Beck gets fired and vows revenge stealing a bunch of tech that he helped develop from the studio. You could even get the "fishbowl" effect by making it a holographic illusion that generates from his collar to protect his identity. His tech could also be tied into the Chitauri like Adrian Toomes's was or whatever tech is left behind after Thanos comes to Earth.

I love Mysterio and would be excited to see him on screen but I too am having a hard time seeing his M.O. as being convincing in the "real" world of a live-action movie. I think his methods rely on the medium of comics. The illustrator's work is already a step removed from reality, so if an illusion is convincing enough to fool there hero (or anyone else) we can buy it, but in the "real" (live-action) world...I'm having a hard time with it. Unless it's 100% holodeck style technology, which I think would be moving too far away from the essence of the character.

Seriously, you can make it work, especially with a tech boost.

Rumor has it that Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio in the Spider-Man Homecoming sequel. I really love that they're using new villains for the new Spider-man movies. I thought The Vulture was one of the better realized villains in the MCU. Yup. In contrast, the recent Superman relaunch. Who should he fight in the first two movies? How about Zod in one and Luthor in the other? But we'll go in that order to mix it up a bit from the '70s versions.

True, but Superman also fought Doomsday and Batman in those films, whom he's never gone up against before in the movies. Plus they were very different versions of Zod and Luthor to the Terrence Stamp and Gene Hackman versions.
