This actor has been part of my television viewing ever since I was a youth. My 1st remembrance of seeing him was in the early 70's as part of the S.W.A.T. team for 2 seasons. He shows up in Soap and Tabitha which are both short lived. Then comes Vega$ and his role as private eye Dan Tanna for 3 seasons. Then he begins showing up in movies and other television roles as a popular guest star. He makes the silly and funny movie Ice Pirates. Along comes the mid 80's and his turn as Robert B. Parker's Boston detective Spenser: For Hire. 1989 he plays Jake Spoon in Lonesome Dove. More guest star and television movie roles and then in the mid 90's syndication Urich once again appears in his own series as the Lazarus Man which was shortly cancelled due to his diagnosis of a rare cancer called synovial sarcoma. Then the tail end of the 90's he appears in Love Boat: The Next Wave for 2 seasons and more guest star turn in television films after being declared cancer free. Appears in Emeril the failed chef's series in 2001 and a pair of final pair of television movies before passing away in 2002. He starred or co-starred in a record of 15 television series.
Urich was one of those actors who had a natural charisma and likability which came across the screen in all of his roles. He made everything seem smooth and effortless for over three decades. The man seemed to be everywhere on television and was never missing for long when a series would end. I can remember him and Steve Forrest in S.W.A.T. most vividly and Vega$ was the 1st television series in prime time that I can remember trying to follow and watch every week on my own as a teen. In Spenser for Hire it was a series that felt like it was hand tailored for him and embodied everything Robert Urich was as a person and an actor. He was an actor which I made an effort to look for and watch in whatever role he took on.
Each of his series carry a special feeling for me and takes me back in time when I watch them now. Urich stands tall in my memories and thoughts as an actor I enjoyed watching and thanks to DVD's I now have all of his major television series so I can keep on watching and remembering him for years to come.
