Man of Steel #5
Written by Brian Michael Bendis Art by Adam Hughes Summary: Superman battles Rogol Zaar on the moon! Plot: I know I've sounded a little like a broken record over the course of the last four issues with my constant criticism that Bendis' plot felt too fragmented to be truly interesting; and while I still feel the other side plots still aren't getting the development they deserve this issue was more focused than the preceding issues. While the other side plots did get some page time, the fire plot actually tied into the monster plot making it feel more cohesive...but the Jon and Lois plot was still disconnected and the implications are so big relegating it to a two page feature is a real disservice and Rogol Zaar is still a waste of a villain. So why do I keep reading despite the flaws? Because the parts Bendis does get right, the characterization and over all tone and mood of Superman's world are really good and I'm really hoping that once this opening salvo is finished he produces a much tighter monthly book. Art: I'm not usually a huge Hughes fan, don't get me wrong I don't mind a little fan service now and again but ultimately I'm here for the story and Hughes' pin up style while beautiful is usually awfully static...but that isn't the case here at all. His work has more gripping enenegy than I've seen from him in years; you feel the punch that sends Superman sprawling to the Moon's surface and when Kara or Clark blast off into the air you'd almost swear you could feel the wind whipping off their capes. Grade:7/10

Blackwood #2Written by Evan Dorkin Art by Veronica Fish Summary: The gang learns that there's more to Blackwood than they thought. Plot: The mystery behind the college for mystic arts continues in Dorkin's second issue of Blackwood, and although the classic 70's horror mood is still as entertaining as it was in the introductory issue the lack of development in the characterization in the students is a bit of a drag. The world Dorkin has created, steeped in mystery and dark magic is immediately enthralling; you can't help but want to explore it and see what's just around that corner over there but that cast is instantly forgettable so it's hard to get too attached. They had a promising start in the introductory issue, but there was no further build up here to the point that I couldn't tell you any of their names and I just finished reading the issue five minutes ago, which not only kills my interest of what happens in the next issue but it also made just getting through this one difficult too. Art: Veronica Fish's art is the high point of the issue, I especially liked her take on the desiccated body of the dean of the college and the two headed monkey was a blast. Grade:5/10

Man of Steel #5.Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Art by Adam Hughes. More fighting between Superman & Rogol Zaar. More Supergirl. More revealed of what happened to Lois & Jon. Despite Zaar being a generic villain it was a decent fight scene between Superman & him. The last page shows why Zaar is on earth. Bendis is finally moving this series toward a conclusion although I suspect both Superman & Action will continue where this mini series ends. Hughes can draw interiors in addition to covers. I remember his work on JLA, Ghost & the recent Betty & Veronica. Another stellar choice for Bendis. Overall I enjoyed this issue more than the last 2. 7/10.

Thor #2. Written by Jason Aaron. Art by Michael Del Mundo. Thor, Loki & Balder in Hel! I don't what to say. This issue felt like a mess to me. It felt disorganized. I felt like Aaron was trying to make it funny & it fell flat. The art isn't helpful telling the story. I do like Thor's different hammers. I really hope Aaron can get this story back on track. And I hope we get a new artist after this arc. 5/10.

Mera #5.Written by Dan Abnett. Art by Lan Medina. Wow. A lot happened this issue. Behind the scenes plans between Orm & Nereus. Xebel agrees to help Atlantis overthrow Rath but only if Orm is made King of Atlantis & Tula marries Nereus. Mera challenges Orm to a fight to prevent all this from happening... This series has been better than the main Aquaman title. I like the "old school" style of art as well as Abnett's writing. 8/10.

Marvel Two In One #7.Written by Chip Zdarsky. Art by Ramon Perez. After the opening arc this issue fell short. It felt like a fill in issue. Ben, Johnny & Doom go to another universe. Rachna's motivations are revealed. Her & Doom jump to another universe leaving Ben & Johnny trapped on a Battleworld ruled by the Spider... This was not one of Zdarsky's best. I suspect this arc is meant to be filler between the initial arc & the FF's return. I don't see this title staying around beyond #12. 5/10.

The Terrifics #5.Written by Jeff Lemire. Art by Evan Shaner. IMO this issue hit it out of the park. Great art by Shaner. And Lemire really works on developing the individual characters. We get glimpses into their personal lives & it makes them more "real". I like this type of writing. Mr Terrific comes off as less of a jerk. Plas shows a different side than being a clown. Then we kick it into high gear with a mystery where a whole town is turning into Metamorphos both humans & animals. After 4 decent issues Lemire finally shows why he is a good writer. Hopefully the rest of this series is like this issue. 9/10.

Spectacular Spider-Man #306.Written by Chip Zdarsky. Art by Adam Kubert and Juan Frigeri. The aftermath of the trip into the past continues as Spidey tries to "fix" the messed up time stream. I just want this arc to be over. I am not really enjoying it all. And I like Zdarsky as a writer. 5/10.

Flash #49.Written by Joshua Williamson. Art by Howard Porter. Wow. This issue had it all. Wally vs Barry (and Wally is faster). Superman vs the Flashes (and they are faster than Superman). The JLA. The Titans. Zoom with new powers as he taps into other forces in addition to the Speed Force. Wally & Barry admitting the JSA is also missing. Williamson is writing a classic with Flash War. This arc has been excellent. I can't wait to read the conclusion in 2 weeks! 9/10.

X-O Manowar #16.Written by Matt Kindt. Art by Trevor Hairsine. This flashback arc of Aric continues. It takes place back when the Roman Empire ruled 2000 years ago before Aric is captured by the aliens and becomes X-O. I never really liked these flashbacks to when Aric was living in the 300's AD. They are OK as brief scenes in an issue but not as an entire arc. Nice art. 4/10.

I hate buying mini-series at full price, so I will either try to pick this one up from the $1 bins in six months or grab the trade off Amazon when it comes out.

Man of Steel #5: I enjoyed the action in this issue and it seemed like the major characters all got some screen time. I am becoming more interested in the fires and the new fire chief. I liked the scene in the firehouse where they are trying to figure out the cause of the fires and the firemen are impressed that their boss is down with Superman AND Batman. Nice cameo by the Justice League and I liked Supergirl better this issue. Glad we are getting somewhere with the Lois and Jon mystery. My guess is that Jon leaves with the mystery guest and Lois goes with him...or something along those lines. The art was good and Superman looked great. 7/10

The Terrifics #5: Absolutely loved this issue. Lots of great character development and I loved the first few pages with the individual vignettes and how they all tied together. Poor Rex and Sapphire...the eternal doomed lovers it seems. Interesting development with Plastic Man too. I like the art too....even better than the original artist. This style seems to fit the book better. The story where the town is Metamorphoed has a very silver age feel too it which I like very much! Good stuff! 10/10
