We have passed the hallway point of 2018. Wow. I am curious about what others have enjoyed the past 6 months, what they dropped & what they are looking forward to in the second half of 2018.
DC: I was surprised with the Terrifics. Started a little shaky but is really capturing some Silver Age goofiness. Man of Steel was underwhelming but Superman launched well. Will miss Tomasi on Superman. Nightwing went down in quality fast and I dropped it. Flash has been stellar. Aquaman has been disappointing with the drawn out story with Rath. Titans got destroyed with editorial direction. Hawkman is better than I expected. Justice League was disappointing. Glad Super Sons got another series. Looking forward to Wilson & Nord on Wonder Woman.
Marvel: Pleasantly surprised by Marvel Two In One. Still enjoying Daredevil. Disappointed with Waid's Captain America. Coates looks good with his first issue. Thor - loved the Jane conclusion, hate the new direction. Iron Man - liked Slott's first issue. Liked Spencer's first issue on Amazing Spider-Man. Looking forward to Fantastic Four. Wasn't crazy about the Avengers. Liking Immortal Hulk so far.
Archie: Loved Waid's series. Looking forward to Archie 1941 & what Spencer will do with the Archie title.
Valiant: Really enjoying Kindt's X-O Manowar.
Others: was pleasantly surprised with Titan's Fighting American. Looking forward to Dynamite's Project Superpowers Chapter 3.

It's only a few issues in, but Gideon Falls by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino is off to a great start. I enjoyed their work on Green Arrow, and was glad to see them working together again.

I am picking up more stuff as new releases than I have in about 5 years. Gideon Falls and the new Hawkman series are my favorite new launches so far, but I have been sampling all the new Age of Heroes stuff, Bendis' Superman, Snyder's Justice League, Aaron's Avengers, King's Mister Miracle, Future Quest, Lemire's Dark Horse stuff in the Black Hammer universe and some other stuff. Barrier was a great read b BKV and Marcos Martin. Self contained 5 issue mini series collecting their webcomic. I picked up the first issue of Joelle Jones Catwoman and Caotes Captain America too but haven;t gotten around to reading them yet.
There is some stuff slated for the rest of the year that I am looking forward too. The Sandman relaunch special and the 4 Sandman Universe titles, Warren Ellis & Jason Howard's Cemetery Beach, and Wilson & Nord on Wonder Woman have my interest, so we'll see how they pay off. Also looking forward to the eventual launch of DC's Black Label and Zoom/Ink imprints.

It's been a pretty good year so far. I've really enjoyed the end of Thor, however dropped it last week after issue 2, will pick up again from 5 if we have a change of artist. Been loving Punisher, so hopefully that continues with the relaunch. Like wise with Amazing Spider-man, which has been pretty good. Others I'm liking are Dark Ark, Pestilence, Gideon Falls, Maestros, The Realm, and Highest House (my favorite). A number of these are finishing so we'll see what the next half brings. Will give Sandman a start

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles rocked my wold almost as much as Flintstones.
Unfortunately only two issues of Southern Bastards so far.
Overall the Berger Books imprint at Dark Horse has been fairly impressive with Incognegro: Renaissance and Mata Hari both being good works.
Speaking of Dark Horse...the Black Hammer universe continues to kick much ass.
Marvel Two-in-One is pure fun.

For me, it is Future Quest Presents and Hawkman is my favorite so far this year.
Archie -- by Waid was a pleasant surprise for me.

For 2018 from what Ive read and seen and enjoyed
Regression and Gideon Falls I like whats going on so far
Marvel: X Men Gold, Hunt for Wolverine. Good stuff with the right pacing mystery for the searching of original Wolverine
new Avengers and the prehistoric Avengers. I like whats going on since Marvel Legacy.
Mighty Thor of Jane and original Thor and the others. Pretty good. Been a long time since I read a Thor comic book since the old original Thor comic from the 1980s and 1990s.
Boom Studios Dynamite. I like what went on in Power of the Dark Crystal and I wish all the luck for their next series Beneath Dark Crystal. Not sure if I want to get into Beneath Dark Crystal right away since Im still binge reading the entire single issues of Power of the Dark Crystal

The only good thing to come out of 2018 to me was Marvel finally getting it's crap together and "draining the swamp" of Buckley, Ike, and all the others that were making it such an utterly miserable place to work
I'm still kind of upset by the changing of the guard at Valiant, but I want to hope that things will stay as good as they are content wise
DC and Image are just running mad laps around everyone like Cap in Winter Soldier

And it is going through financial turmoil and losing value fast, and only strict control of the Chinese stock market by the company has kept the value of its stock form going into free fall. I wouldn't be too confident in Valiant's future at the moment unless it is bought again, and I don't see that happening. -M

So it's very queer happenstance to me that a Chinese Multinational Conglomerate should buy them out/overtake them I mean it happened Marvel with New World Pictures....

I have mostly been catching up on back issue reading, so have bought very little new material this year.
In fact, less than any in my entire 40 years of collecting, I think.
Really enjoying both Hawkman, and The Terrifics and am eagerly awaiting Shazam and the Legion coming back. Maybe the JSA too ?
Let's throw in the FF from Marvel too.
Buying Doomsday Clock, and it's decent, and read Metal, and it was ok.
Still buying the entire Valiant line supporting it but hopelessly behind. Have greatly enjoyed this latest iteration and am holding my breath that it continues onward.
Have greatly enjoyed Dark Horse's Black Hammer.

It's only a few issues in, but Gideon Falls by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino is off to a great start. I enjoyed their work on Green Arrow, and was glad to see them working together again. ah, glad you mentioned that. I was trying to think of the title of this series and it would not come to mind. Saw an issue on the stands last month and thought the artwork looked really good.
I'm still on the fence about Lemire as a writer: I've only read his very early solo book, Lost Dogs, which showed a lot of promise but was so raw that it would be both unfair and ill-advised to make any firm judgements about him as a creator, and the first collection of his Moon Knight, which I found disappointingly ordinary - and I choose that word deliberately: I mean that it felt very similar to a lot of what passes for cutting edge in the current wave of superhero comics writing, or so it seems to me. However, it's possible that a single volume isn't enough to go by, so I'm trying to keep an open mind on that score as well.

DC: I admit, Bendis on Superman has been better than I expected. My question is: can he maintain it? I need to do some speed-reading to catch up on Flash since, by my last count, I am 26 issues behind. Hawkman has been a pure pleasure.
Marvel: Slott's finale on ASM was (frankly) amazing. Spencer's first issue of ASM was definitely a change in pace and tone but I liked it. As for Slott on Iron Man, a frantic pace and wit but that's Tony Stark these days, this should be interesting. Marvel-Two-In-One has just been a blast which is why I'm looking very much towards the revival of the FF coming soon. The Death of Jane Foster was an emotionally draining roller-coaster ride and so far, I've enjoyed Del Mundo's work on the new Thor series. Avengers: No Surrender was one of the best self-contained epics that I've read in quite some time featuring some terrific art and the Avengers re-launch has been equally entertaining.
I do my best to support the X-line. Gold, Blue, Red have all been fun reads and I'm looking forward to the upcoming release of Black. While I may not be able to buy all their ancillary titles, I do at least try to check some of them out initially. Domino by Gail Simone was quite good as it focused on her troubled past, powers, and relationships while New Mutants: Dead Souls offered up a unique grouping of old X-teammates involved in supernatural adventures. The Rogue/Gambit miniseries by Kelly Thompson was fun with terrific characterization and insight into the couples' long and complicated relationship. I am looking equally forward to Thompson's further depictions of their adventures together as husband & wife.
Other: The Prisoner mini-series by Milligan from IDW has been good. Robotech (also from IDW) has been outstanding due to the changes (so far) to the traditional story. Stan Sakai has more than earned the right to publish however he wishes and so far, the new Usagi Yojimbo mini The Hidden has been excellent. I've been getting Mage: The Hero Denied but I may wait till it's finished to read it all at one time.

Lemire is another writer whose creator-owned stuff I love but whose work for the big 2 I find very meh. Not bad, just paling in comparison to his creator-owned stuff. Descender is one of my favorite books coming out right now. Trillium was wonderful, as was Sweet Tooth. The Black Hammer stuff from Dark Horse has been fantastic as well. And Gideon Falls is one of the few Image books I have decided to buy monthly instead of in trades. At this point, I will pretty much try any creator-owned series he does, but I am still not sold on his Marvel/DC stuff as much. -M

And Gideon Falls is one of the few Image books I have decided to buy monthly instead of in trades. Why have you decided to read it monthly? On creator own works, I'm always torn between buying monthly and risking forgetting important details along the way, or (deluxe) trade waiting until I have the full story to read in one go. Curious how others decide.
