The Nib has been an online presence for several years; now they're launching a paper magazine.
Here's their Kickstarter page:
"We're making a quarterly print publication with the best non-fiction, journalistic and political comics from a ton of contributors.
Over the past five years, you may have run across one of The Nib's comic essays, animations, or daily political cartoons about our dystopian hell world. We pay all our creators and we’ve published thousands of comics—from around the world—on important topics like race, gender, identity, capitalism and how Trump is a shit. But we want to go bigger.
So we’re Kickstarting The Nib magazine, a quarterly print publication featuring the best non-fiction comics, journalism and satire. It will be very nice. It's going to be the only magazine of its kind.
Where the Nib newsletter and website focus on the daily onslaught of news, The Nib Magazine will zoom out to tackle larger themes untethered from the news cycle, and subscribers will be directly supporting the entire publication as a result. Launching a print publication is no small task. We’re asking for $50,000 to cover the first year of printing and shipping.
And it won’t be a little floppy magazine. At nearly 100 pages, with high production quality and sleek design, you'll want to Instagram it—even read it. Inside, you’ll find large feature spreads, interviews, and different sections we’ve designed to deal with each issue’s theme in different ways—all in comics form.
We've been hard at work on this project all year. The art for the first issue is coming in NOW and, if fully funded, we’re literally going to hit ’send’ to the printer the moment the campaign is over. If you back us to become a subscriber, you'll get your first issue of the magazine in September.
Our first issue: Death
We did say big ideas, didn’t we? We’re approaching that dreadful subject from a lot of angles—personal stories of loss, the rich pursuing life extension technology, the history of lethal injection, interviews with people about the first dead body they saw, and great moments in exhumation history.
Our next three themes will be Family, Empire and Scams. We're commissioning stories for them already. The lineup of artists we have on board for this is huge—check out our contributor section!
The Inkwell: an ongoing membership program to support The Nib
The magazine will be the centerpiece of a membership program we're calling The Inkwell (because: "The Nib") where you can get an exclusive mug or tote and help sustain the publication.
Because of today’s media environment, direct reader support from you means we can keep the journalistic and editorial independence that stays true to our values. Your founding membership will support the publication for the long haul, so we can pay creators, and keep making the best non-fiction and political comics. Being in The Inkwell means you get:
The Inkwell newsletter, with previews of our projects in the works and a behind-the-scenes look at The Nib.
Exclusive swag.
Discounts on merch.
Access to a community page set to launch next year.
We've got exclusive swag
We're making special merch for the campaign: an exclusive mug and tote! They capture the... spirit of the times. Behold the "We should improve society somewhat" tote bag and the "Rise and shine. The world is doomed" mug.
Both of these products are only going to be available to Inkwell members. And if you want both, select one of the levels and we'll offer you the other item through Backerkit once we're funded.
Free phone backgrounds for all backers!
Three designs from Nomi Kane, Matt Bors and Matt Lubchansky for the truly logged on backer.
If you want to have a bigger impact in getting this project off the ground, we're offering a slew of our contributors' books as rewards. You can add one, two or even three of the following books to your order. When we send out our backer survey at the end of the campaign, you can choose which books you want.
Rules for Dating My Daughter by Mike Dawson
Trump's ABCs by Ann Telnaes
Your Black Friend by Ben Passmore
Skeleton Party by Matt Lubchansky
Spy vs Spy: The Top Secret Files! by Peter Kuper
Go East, Young Fam! by Keith Knight
What is a Glacier by Sophie Yanow
Blocked: Stories From The World of Online Dating by Ally Schwed & Gerardo Alba
Brief Histories of Everyday Objects by Andy Warner
Stupid Dreams by Joey Alison Sayers
Ghost Stories by Whit Taylor
Disalmanac: A Book of Fact-Like Facts by Scott Bateman
Shut Up Donnie: Particularly Uninspiring Quotes from the 45th President by Nomi Kane
Buy some original art
We're offering originals from Ann Telnaes, Vanesa R. Del Rey, Pia Guerra, Matt Bors and Jen Sorensen. Plus original commissions from Emily Flake, Matt Lubchansky and Eleri Harris. To see what those look like, check out this Medium post! medium.com/@thenib/88ad9df98cea
We have a ton of cartoonists already set to appear in the first four issues.
If we exceed our goal, we want to add more to the project—exclusive stickers with each magazine, an expanded page count and a Nib sticker pack for everyone!
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
We're working with the great folks at Make That Thing on merch production and fulfillment and we have run successful Kickstarter campaigns before. Launching a print magazine is no joke, and we've been working with people who have experience with production, printers and distribution to make sure there are no unexpected hurdles. We have all the stories commissioned and much of the final art already delivered.
We will no doubt face challenges in the creation of this project, but we feel ready to deal with them and deliver on time."
