Infinity Inc was mercifully put to rest, Manhunter continues its excellent debut, Superman Annual reintroduces the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian, from Kirby's Jimmy Olsen stories, and we get a new Atom title. Action Comics Weekly launched, though I really only read it for Secret Six and, especially, Mike Grell's Blackhawk. Grell turned the Blackhawks into Steve Canyon, which was an excellent way to show their transition to post-WW2 adventures. It also removed a bit of the sour taste of Chaykin's mini-series, which kind of irked me, as it progressed. I had high hopes for it; but, Chaykin turned it into a more cynical, nastier piece of work, instead of high adventure. The Martin Pasko series that followed found a little better balance, though I preferred this over it.

I was cutting back on some old stalwarts and trying some new stuff at this time so my pull was a little inconsistent. It was towards the end of my freshman year at university, and I had stopped pulling at the shop back home, and was pulling a handful of stuff, but mostly buying what caught my eye week to week when I made it to s shop or the comic rack at Walden Books near our dorm. I would catch up on a lot of stuff that summer when I went home and was able to visit my old shop, and I started with Westfield before leaving to go back to university for my sophomore year.
Action Comics 601-604-my primary interest was the Green Lantern strip, but I enjoyed most of the features except Wild Dog. Adventures of Superman 443 Amazing Spider-Man 303 Avengers 294-I was losing interest in this book even though it had been my favorite since I was a kid, I would drop it after 300 but would come back eventually only to drop again and come back... Batman 422-I wanted to like Starlin's Batman more than I did Batman Annual 12 Detective 588 I was digging Breyfogle's Batman though Flash Gordon 3 Justice League International #16 (still one of my favorite covers by Maguire) Martian Manhunter 4 Who Framed Roger Rabbit GN Nick Fury vs.SHIELD 2 Official Marvel Index to the Avengers 7 Phantom 3 Power of the Atom 1 (I actually subscribed to this from DC to get the signed first issue by Roger Stern and the art team. I was a bit disappointed with the series and never renewed it though) Superman 20 Superman Annual 2 Uncanny X-Men 232 Who's Who Update '88 1
I think that's all of it I got at the time. I did lick up some others later as back issues.

Quite a month: Superman kills, a new Starman debuts, Lobo meets Guy Gardner, Manhunter finishes its first, fantastic story arc and V for Vendetta continues, at DC. Transitional month for me, as I was commissioned as an ensign, in the Navy, on May 28, and was heading off to 6 months of Supply Corps School, in Athens, GA. This necessitated setting up a mail order account, until I found a new local shop, which I wouldn't until late in my time at Athens. I wouldn't set up a regular subscription at a shop until I reported to my new duty station, in January of 1989. I don't even remember who it was. Turned out, there was a pretty good shop, across town. I just hadn't heard about it. When I found it, it turned out to be a great place to catch up some of my want list and pick up my first issue of The Tick (#3). I did get some issues from New England Comics, which gave me an introductory poster of The Tick. Actually, they might have even been the regular mail order subscription, now that I think of it. Starman was a decent book, with fine stories by Roger Stern and nice, vibrant art from rookie Tom Lyle. The costume was butt-ugly, though; he looked like an Olympic speed skater or something. Haywire sounded better on paper than it actually was, as a comic. Same for Wanderers. Flash Gordon was also nowhere nears as good as I had hoped it would be. Dan Jurgens tried to update the material; but, it lacked a spark and his designs were kind of dull.

Looking at Mike's Newsstand this looks like a big month for me for some reason. I was back home after freshman year at university, bored as hell and working at my old high school job for the summer with not much else to do in my down time except read comics and listen to Pink Floyd except when my college friends came to town to visit.

The Rocketeer was back!!!!! Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow a Liefeld comic; Kesel really cleaned up his work! Manhunter had a nice tale, from the late Kim Yale (editor and John Ostrander's then-wife). Guy was back to his old self, in JLI, Deadshot got a spin-off mini, from Suicide Squad, Gangbuster is acting odd in Adv of Superman, Tim Truman continues Emanuel Santanna's odyssey, in Scout War Shaman and V relates his back story. I have no idea why I was still getting Wanderers and I can't even recall the plot to Haywire. Power of the Atom was decent mid-range superhero material; but, it petered out quickly. I can't even recall how long I stuck with it. Who's Who '88 was the last to be done in comic format, as the loose leaf edition would follow. I came to Nexus after the fact; but, this month had issue 50, with the awesome painted cover, from Steve Rude. Jonny Quest I got later; but, features a story where Dr Quest uses his reputation and past history to bluff his way past enemy agents. Why William Messner-Loebs is not still writing comics, on a regular basis is unconscionable. The man was fantastic and deserves to be working in the field he loves and had the chops to excel.

By this time I was in college and was only sporadically collecting comics. At this point, I was mostly just trying to keep my streaks going in the team books I'd been collecting so long, being a completionist. Really, in a couple of years, I won't even be able to participate in this thread.
