Supposedly, neither Dillin nor Sekowsky ever balked at drawing JLA, which despite its seeming importance for DC, was a hot potato because it was a team book and ergo that much more of a pain to draw. And Dillin had a reputation for getting his work done on time. Sekowsky seemed to be able to compose panels with a lot of figures without making them seem overcrowded. And Dillin had 20 years experience on another team book--Blackhawk. I think Schwartz's only art requirement was, "Can you tell what's going on?" Agreed. I think Sekowsky was better at it than Dillin, on JLA anyway.

I think Don Heck was better than both of them.

I posted this in the RIP thread; but, actor Paul D'Amato, of the movie Slap Shot, passed away. He was the visual inspiration for John Byrne's interpretation of Wolverine... He was a perfect choice (mutton chops and wild hair, for a start) as his character "Dr Hook" Tim McCracken is wild and violent and aggressive.... I had no idea. That's pretty darn cool!!! I knew that Byrne had based members of the Hellfire Club on Peter Wyngarde, Orson Welles and Donald Sutherland (and Jean Grey on Raquel Welch, as I recall) but this is news to me! I can really see it. D'Amato is just perfect for the early, crazy Wolverine. Too bad we never got a comic character based on Oggie Oglethorpe..... (Ned Dowd, brother of screenwriter Nancy Dowd, who based the script on stories her brother told her and from traveling with the team). That, or a trio of mutants, based on the Hanson Brothers!

I think Don Heck was better than both of them. Each cancels the other out, as they were all the wrong choice for the kind of creativity / style and energy team books required. If the JLA and Avengers were books about the true identities of the characters all working in a law firm or as politicians (and never putting on a superhero costume), Heck, Sekowsky and Dillin's art would have been somewhat sufficient. Certainly more than their handling of superheroes.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the debut of Jonny Quest... (and apparently there's a new Jonny Quest comic in the works at Dynamite with a FCBD issue scheduled). -M

Today is the birthday of 2 of my favorite comic creators, one living, one passed-Jeff Smith and Norm Breyfogle. It's wonderful to honor the passed, but don't forget to take a minute to let those living (comic creator or not) know how much they mean to you or how much you admire them or their work. There's a lot of negativity in the world, put something positive in it to brighten someone's day.

I know many people, myself included, have a lot of love for Batman artists like Jim Aparo, Neal Adams, and so many others, which is fine. But when I pick up a book or magazine featuring a look at the best Batman artists, I’d like to see more love for Breyfogle; I particularly like how he drew Batman’s cape.

If, like me, you're a fan of Peanuts and Charlie Brown, you'll enjoy this 17 minutes of Charles M. Shulz drawing the strip and characters. It's a compilation of footage from different sources and I have to say that it's a rather relaxing watch...

Please keep comic icon Trina Robbins in your thoughts and prayers. She was recently hospitalized 9at age 85) because of a stroke. Mrs. MRP and I had the chance to meet her in 2014 at Gem City Comic Con when she had nothing but encouragement for my wife's creative efforts. Here's Mrs. MRP with Trina just after Trina bought some of my wife's art from our table and asked for a pick with her... All the positive vibes I can to Ms. Robbins are on their way. -M

She's banged the drum more loudly for the acknowledgements of the women who made comics, going back to the 30s (and before, with comic strips) and wrote some great reference works on the subject. Hope she recovers.

He's recovering from the heart issues and back to working on comics, but I don't think he's out making appearances yet. He missed Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (the comic festival he helps organize) this past October, but we'll see if he does appearances there this year. -M

Can't afford to hire models on a comic book artist's salary? Try using clothing store manikins!
