Congratulations 3P. A deserving (as once unbelievable that would have been to me) Don Heck cover. This contest has been eye opening for me.

stevo, for one of the greatest covers ever. But it still finishes first by a whisker only. So many great covers here. I was going to post that Showcase cover, but thought you would.

Maybe I'm looking at Heck's Avengers work through young eyes, but I consider him THE Avengers artist. I love his storytelling and he drew the formative team ( the Kooky Quartet) that kept the Avengers book going. I agree--I loved Heck's Kooky Quartet work; for me, he made the Avengers look like individuals. For example the cocky yet insecure Hawkeye's posture and set of his jaw differed from seasoned veteran Cap's. Later on when the cast expanded he made Wanda and Natasha and Jan look different, and it wasn't just the hairdos and costumes. The way Heck drew them, there was a sophistication to Nat and Jan that Wanda lacked. Sure, I admired John Buscema's Avengers art, with those frieze-like panel compositions of his; but it was Heck who made those characters come alive to me. They seemed like people and not just beautiful statues. And Heck's Iron Man work in Tales of Suspense remains a Silver Age highlight for me. I wasn't an IM fan back then but I've since read the run in the Essentials. Believe me the Essentials black and white really highlights Heck's fine work. His IM run is like watching a 1940s movie, it's dark and gritty and glamorous.

A blatant combination of James Bond and Emma Peel. I had this comic! It was one of my favorite issues of any comic back then. I knew about Wonder Woman's change of direction/ de-powering thanks to house ads in other DCs, but this was the first issue of the new WW I'd actually managed to pick up. While I loved this particular issue and a few after it, later on in the run Sekowsky's art became too sloppy/rushed-looking for my taste, plus he was writing this series as well, and not doing a particularly interesting job of it IMO. But for a few issues this was one of my favorite DC series for a while.

I was tempted to go with yet another Bond cover, and there are 2 more S.H.I.E.L.D. covers I love. But I'm going with this one instead That's looks more like a splash page than a comic book cover ... very different and quite unusual cover here! You are so right, Mecha. The cover action actually continues/flows into the first page of the comic (SS #1).
