That is sad, what a phenomenal artist. A true master his work on Sea Devils was beyond amazing.
Yes--a true master talent in comics, and his work on Sea Devils is a standout of the period. He will be missed.

My Favorite Cover of Russ HeathIt's reminded me of King Ghidorah and rightly so; and it's beauty of a find ... his attention to details and artistic talents should be highly praised.

Just found this great illustration online: By the way, the site where that image is posted, the Bristol Board, has featured a bunch of Heath's illustrations over the past few days.

beccabear67, just for the record, it's Jack Adler who was the genius behind those beautiful DC covers with wash effects, including the beautiful cover you posted. The combination of Heath art and Adler colors and washes was made in heaven. Another beauty...

One thing that got mentioned in the comments, at Jim McQuarrie's tribute, was Cowgirls At War, done with Michael O'Donoghue, of National Lampoon and SNL (and was done for Lampoon). It's hard to post any part of it, due to copious nudity; but, it is a beautiful, if rather gonzo piece. O'Donoghue had the strangest sense of humor (check out his appearances on SNL, as well as his NL stuff) and it is on display here (lots of bondage, men's adventure magazine Nazis and other pulpy touches) and on his collaboration with Frank Springer, The Adv. of Phoebe Zeitgeist (same stuff, nudity, sadism, pulp Nazis, etc.). Like contemporaries Bill Ward and Wally Wood, even when doing something akin to porn (depending on your viewpoint), Russ still made it look gorgeous (and not quite as unsettling as some of Ward's stuff).

On Facebook, someone posted work Heath did for the Lampoon-inspired Apple Pie in the'70s. I forgotten that (if I even noticed at the time).

Sad news. RIP RH. We're lost several iconic comic book artists this year. Thanks for all of the scans re: his artwork; I was never extremely familiar with his, but do recognize this art when I see it. I did not know that he drew those ads for the toy Roman soldiers (mail-order); I remember seeing that in comics back in the day. His pin-up of The Baroness from the G.I.Joe: ARAH comics is excellent; very nice

He also drew two of my al-time favourite fill-in issues, Son of Satan #8 and Ka-Zar #12 easch of which made me wish he had been the regular artist on the series or on some similar book. The SoS one in particular was really outstanding.

The combination of Heath art and Adler colors and washes was made in heaven. Just reading an interview circa 2011 with artist Liz Berube and she had this to say about the often unsung Mr. Adler...
