In light of my recent injury and after talking it over with publisher John Morrow, editor Keith Dallas, and editorial advisor Roy Thomas, I have reluctantly stepped down as the writer of the 1945-49 volume of TwoMorrows' American Comic Book Chronicles series. There was simply no way I could deliver a completed manuscript by the August 1st deadline (which John explained can't be extended), not when I'm medically restricted to just 3 or 4 hours of computer time a day. It's clear that the 10- to 14-hour days I put in to get the last two chapters done on time contributed substantially to my current back woes and I just can't risk permanently compromising my mobility. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement but it is what it is.
All is not lost, however. Once I've finished some final details on the 1940-44 book (and wrapped up this year's Classic Comics Christmas), I'm going to be embarking on the project I was considering before I landed the ACBC assignment: a history of comic book westerns. So don't waste time feeling sorry for me. I'm not done with the field of comic book history by a long shot.
Cei-U! I summon the bump in the road!
Incidentally, I haven't yet informed my family so I won't be mentioning this over on Facebook yet. Mum's the word!

Sorry to hear that you have to bow out on the 45-49 volume, Kurt. But you certainly don't want to compromise your health. Do they have someone lined up to write it?
I'll be all over your history of comics westerns when you get it finished.

Man, that sucks. But yeah, like Slam said, take care of your health. And good luck on the future project.

That's a real shame, Kurt, but understandable under the circumstances. Glad that you're staying positive and, after all, your health is the most important thing.
That history of western comics sounds very interesting.

your health is the most important thing, Kurt. (echoing what others have said).
is there possibility you might get co-write credit, and they can use most of the material for the chapters you had already completed?

I understand your health and that's the single most important thing to do right now and most of all I wished you a speedy recovery and a brighter future.

Damn, Kurt, does that suck! I am so sorry.
But, as the others have said, your health comes first.
Will also be looking forward to the Westerns history.
Idle thought... no way you can dictate/ record from your notes or use a voice-activated program?

is there possibility you might get co-write credit, and they can use most of the material for the chapters you had already completed? Aside from some raw data and a handful of notes for the 1945 chapter, there isn't enough material to justify a credit. I plan to pass 'em on to whoever picks up the assignment (Bill Schelley, most likely) so I'm sure I'll get a nod in the acknowledgements, That's good enough for me.
Cei-U! I summon the early stages!

Idle thought... no way you can dictate/ record from your notes or use a voice-activated program? I do use voice recognition software, but while it's handy for the actual writing it's incredibly clumsy and slow for the research/notetaking process. And it's not just a matter of typing. It's all the mousing, the long hours spent downloading the comics issue by issue, and just so much more that leaves me achy and exhausted. But I'll be able to work at my own pace on the westerns project and I won't have to conform to the ACBC format which means more creative latitude, so while I am sorry I can't write the second 1940s book, I'm focused on what comes next and not on what might have been.
Cei-U! Seriously, I'm cool with it!

I'm sorry to hear this, but if your health improves as a result of your taking a step back then hopefully you'll be receiving some good news health wise fairly soon. I hope that doesn't sound frivolous or dismissive of the hard work you've clearly devoted to this project, but considering the fact that you're probably the most knowledgeable (and one of the most entertaining) posters on a site full of informed minds, I'm sure your talents will continue to be put to good use for a long time to come.
