Star Boy and Dream Girl followed by Hawkman and Hawkgirl I forgot about Star Boy and Dream Girl... that was one of the best too, I guess DC had the edge on romance? I know later it was Dream Girl and Braniac 5 but before that it was Braniac and Supergirl for a long time. And Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl, and Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel, and Karate Kid and Princess Projectra and... The Legion of Super-Romances?

Yes, I've come to realize that Silver Age LSH was essentially a transitionary comic between the romance comics that preceded it and the super-hero comics that followed it. Many of the stories were very relationship-driven, in the "Why is he/she being so mean to me? I thought he liked/loved me!" vein.

Yes, romances were a big part of the LSH. One of my favorite stories is the one where Star Boy is expelled for killing someone in self defense (with Brainiac 5 being a total jerk!). At the end of the story, Star Boy exits the clubhouse where Dream Girl is waiting for him. To me, that was a great moment (excluding his expulsion) cementing their relationship.

I love the Silver Age LSH romances too: Light Lass & Timber Wolf, Saturn Girl & Lightning Lad, Princess Projectra & Karate Kid, Dream Girl & Star Boy, Phantom Girl & Ultra Boy, Supergirl & Brainy, Shadow Lass and Mon-El, and the other couples established back then. Those are the ones that count for me! But as for my all-time favorite comic book couple, hands down it's Ben and Alicia. Two beautiful souls, such a poignant romance. (I understand they married recently). This panel from FF #9 always makes me tear up: And here they are by Buscema from FF #107, with Ben (obviously) in his pre-cosmic rays form.

Reading this thread brought home to me how many of the female superheroes of the Silver Age were Legionnaires: Saturn Girl, Shrinking Violet, Phantom Girl, Shadow Lass, Dream Girl, Triplicate Girl, Supergirl, and Light Lass for a start. No other team had such a high ratio of female: male, and I bet for a while in the Silver Age, there were more female heroes in the Legion than outside the Legion.

rberman and I am remembering correctly, wasn't Saturn Girl Legion leader for a term back then?

rberman and I am remembering correctly, wasn't Saturn Girl Legion leader for a term back then? Probably. Most everybody seemed to get the job at some point, even Wildfire, who seems very unsuited to the task of delegation. It wasn't enough that they had a superhero club that only let in the cool heroes and played initiation pranks even on their idols like Superboy. Even once you were in the club, the drama never ended; there was an endless run of popularity polls amongst the membership, jockeying for position, romantic intrigue. It was Heathers with capes, and Timber Wolf was Christian Slater.

rberman and I am remembering correctly, wasn't Saturn Girl Legion leader for a term back then? Yes, she was the LSH's second leader (Cosmic Boy was the first; and she was succeeded by Brainiac 5). Loved her character in the Silver Age, she was smart, assertive, and a true leader. She was usually at the forefront in many of the Legion stories throughout the Edmond Hamilton period and even during Jim Shooter's tenure as writer she usually retained her strength of character, at least when the team was the feature in Adventure Comics. For example when there was a contest to establish the most powerful Legionnaire (Adv. #375), she was the only female Legionnaire who wanted to compete. Always loved her for that!

Ben Grimm and Alicia Masters were one of the great couples, I liked it when Alicia got to show her own courage in some stories in FF and Two-in-One. Nobody has stood up for Ambush Bug and Cheeks yet...

Wes Dodds and Dian Belmont is the best relationship I have read in comics, hands down. Sandman Mystery Theatre is a nearly perfect book.

Well as I kinda started this I better pony up. No particular order of favoritism ... Ben Grimm and Alicia. Just always meant to be, and an ideal of not judging anyone by appearance(by either). I believe this will be one of the rare occasions when the "will they, won't they?" being fulfilled won't lead to the relationship death. It's about time is all I have to say. Alana and Marko. My vote for the most real relationship in an unreal comic. Birth, marriage, fidelity, true love, arguments, drug-taking, and Giant scrotums. Things we all have had in our lives Wildfire and Dawnstar. Unrequited love, never to be, well, consummated. Element lad and Shvaughn Erin. I loved watching this develop over a 7 or 8 year period, and was impressed with how they handled the reveal about Sean, especially considering the time this came out. Mon-El and Shadow Lass. Another which was a pleasure to watch mature. I liked how they were (as with Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, and Cosmic Boy) or became elder statesmen keeping a wary eye on the children. (The Legion obviously spoke to me through the '80s with the wring of Paul Levitz and the influence of Keith Giffen. I believe they tried to give as diverse a grouping as they could, and in general, succeeded) As much as I enjoyed Diamondback at the time, Cap's relationship with Bernie a few years before was better. BUT ...I love his relationship with Agent 13, especially as given us by Ed Brubaker. He seemed to distill the best of both into a pairing that is destined to always be sacrificed to duty. I love that he hasn't forsaken her in her current aged state, this love won't be bound by anything as trivial as appearances. Conan and Belit. Whether by Roy and Big John, or Wood and Cloonan, I still feel (God Cloonan was good on that book)the pain he goes through, and the "intestinal fortitude"(as the Hulkster might say)to get through what must have almost destroyed him. The big "What If...?" of Conan's life. Finally, for now, I offer to you the greatest creation of the arguably greatest creator of the last 30 years, Mr. Alan Moore's D.R. & Quinch, the fun-loving, impressionable, young scamps from 2000Ad circa '83 to '85. S'Alright.
