I think the whole question takes us perilously close to fan-fiction territory, where readers fantasise about favourites X and Y getting together, and I'm hard put to come up with many examples that really appeal to me. But there are a couple that come to mind. Hmm. I consider the lasts 40-or-so years of mainstream superhero comics as fan-fiction. Doesn't make 'em bad. Counterpoint: Yes it does. I mean, what isn't fan fiction? Every work of art is created by someone who likes that mode of representation, and who is influenced by those who came before him. Homer probably heard previous mythological tales and thought, "I can do something with that..."

Homer probably heard previous mythological tales and thought, "I can do something with that..." "I Hate Comics!" John Buscema That's less true in comics for the first forty years than other media, though. The majority of the first generation of comics artists wanted to use the medium as a springboard for a more respectable, fulfilling career. Like illustrating ads for hair care products. Not saying it was better, but it was the least fan-fictiony attitude any artist can have. Counterpoint: It was better.

But there are a couple that come to mind. I don't see that at all with this question...either the way it was put or, largely, the way it was answered. If it had been "Who do you wish had gotten together in the funnybooks" then, yeah, that's fan-fic central. But by and large the couples that have been cited have been couples through most of their existence. For every Johnny Storm & Crystal or E-1 Batman & Catwoman that you can certainly argue are fan-ficish there are a number of couples like were together from the beginning or near beginning of their existence.

As a kid, I was always exposed to Peter Parker & Mary Jane. But reading Marvel Tales with back stories of Amazing Spider-Man, I grew to like the Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy tandem. In fact, I'd read an alternate ongoing of PP and GS relationship. Needless to say it was traumatic when I finally read about Gwen's death at the time when I finally read that ASM reprint of issues 121/122, not knowing beforehand what happened to her (there's no internet at the time to look up bios of characters in comic books at the time). I preferred Peter and Gwen Stacy as a couple to him and MJ as well. Damn shame what they did to Gwen. But when I recently went back to the earliest appearances of Felicia Hardy (Black Cat) in both the ASM and Spectacular books of the early 80s, I found myself wishing they would have fleshed out their relationship more. They've got such great chemistry. I understand there's a What If? from that era in which they marry, so I should check that one out.

This is an excellent What If book and it's really an worthy attempt to make it realistic as possible and a dear favorite of mine. Worth checking out if you can managed to snag a copy of it.
