Aqualad! *Jerry Seinfeld voice* What's the deal with Aqualad. 1960! 1960 Aqualad debuted? You get a kid side-kick 19 years into the life of the strip? Who does that?!
My general theory: Aquaman was rebooted (new origin etc.) in order to prepare him to headline his own title. The kid side-kick was part of this. Can anyone confirm or deny? And if I'm wrong, what's the deal with Aqualad?

No intimate knowledge; but, like you say, probably part of the times. The kid got be on the cartoon, so he got some decent mileage.
At the same time, Kid Flash debuted in 1959; so, same kind of timeframe before Flash got a sidekick.

Kid Flash appeared in 1959 and he was sidekick to the Flash that debuted in 1956. That's just 3 years. But you are correct in that they wanted to make shows and comics that skewed to the younger kids that were buying them at the time. Now a days, only old men with long beards buy comics.

3 things I liked about DC's Silver Age that Marvel didn't have?
1. Fictional cities.
2. Earth 1/Earth 2.
3. Teen sidekicks.

I've read reprints of some early appearances of Kid Flash and Aqualad and I think Aqualad was the more interesting and well drawn (Wally West really looked like a miniature adult in the first few appearances and his costume originally was exactly like The Flash's). Some of the later Aqualad back-up stories with Tula/Aquagirl are really good, like when they go to an outdoor rock concert and have trouble getting back. Who can't relate to that, only not having to do with being out of the water. But how patronizing to be called Minnow by Aquaman for so long, and Kid Flash's yellow costume was much better than Aqualad's. Even Marine Boy was also more stylin'... just saying.

I always felt they never did anything with Aqualad until maybe the 80’s when they made him a sorcerer. And recently the Titans book gave him Super strength.

Now a days, only old men with long beards buy comics. 3 years and only 9 appearances (3 in Showcase 6 in his own title) unless my math fails me. Still... it's certainly arguable that the rebooted Silver Age Aquaman was as much a different character from the Golden Age Aquaman as Barry Allen was from Jay Garrick. So if that is true than the timeline is very similar... Aqualad showed up only a year or two into the Earth One Aquaman's career.
