I wonder what IDW will do differently with the property. I think Dark Horse did a fine job supporting Usagi for decades, but perhaps IDW can help make Usagi accessible to a wider readership, especially as they have far more all-ages titles. But if this means an end to the Saga editions, I will be crushed

I think Dark Horse did a fine job supporting Usagi for decades, but perhaps IDW can help make Usagi accessible to a wider readership, especially as they have far more all-ages titles. But if this means an end to the Saga editions, I will be crushed Quote: "the character's IDW era will begin with a new ongoing series and collections of all of the previous stories." Since Saga would be Darkhorse's copyrighted version of the reprinted Usagi and the announcement says IDW will be creating new collections of previous stories I would presume IDW will come up with their own special "name" for their reprint editions so people would order the IDW version rather than Darkhorse. That would buy time for IDW with reprinting older stuff (perhaps in smaller or larger collections?) to help differentiate the brand and provide time to have "newer" IDW Usagi issues run before collecting them. Why discontinue a good thing when "Saga" is a proven seller? Edited for Update: CBR report says IDW reprint collections will be in FULL COLOR. Nothing else stated if they will be continuing with black and white reprint collections.

From the news reports,it said IDW would have the full library of Usagi to reprint-does that mean the Fantagraphics stuff as well? Will IDW be doing color volumes of the early stuff that Fantagraphics has collected in addition to the stuff Dark Horse had?

Will IDW be doing color volumes of the early stuff that Fantagraphics has collected in addition to the stuff Dark Horse had? -M I'm curious about this as well. When Stan moved to Dark Horse, Fantagraph retained the right to reprint the content he produced for them. Apparently, the same does not hold true for Dark Horse. I was a floppy purist for years, and I finally made the switch for these Saga editions. I am not rebuying these stories again. I truly truly hope, for the fans' sakes, that the Saga editions will continue at least long enough to include the remaining Dark Horse stories.

I'm assuming that Sakai owns all rights to his property and thus the reprint rights. Just one thing, I would be nice if they did some type of legacy numbering like Marvel does. Or is part of the deal that they restart the numbering to grab new readers ?

I'm assuming that Sakai owns all rights to his property and thus the reprint rights. I don't think it's that straightforward, at least not with Fantagraph. Thus the Saga editions beginning with the Mirage issues. Well, when they did the renumbering for The Hidden, I believe they published the legacy number too. Perhaps they will do that again with IDW.

The Comic Beat article on the move to IDW has some clarification on the Fantagraphics issue.. So IDW will be putting out color editions of these, but the b&w versions will continue to be available from Fantagraphics. Also it looks like the new series in June will be in color with Tom Luth on boards as colorist. I also like this bit form the article... yes let's stop taking it for granted. And finally, the bring up a tidbit that got some discussion here on our boards... -M

For further clarification on what will happen with the black and white editions, Stan posted on the Dojo board:

This is pretty big news, I wonder what, other than color, IDW was able to offer that Dark Horse wasn't.

This is pretty big news, I wonder what, other than color, IDW was able to offer that Dark Horse wasn't. A wider audience. IDW has many all-ages books. The same kids who are reading Star Wars Adventures might give a samurai rabbit a try. Usagi has always been an all-ages book, but it's never been at a publisher that courted an all-ages audience until now.

IDW is also the current publisher of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so there is some cross-over audience there, and Stan worked with IDW on the Usagi/TMNT books, which probably paved the way for the move.
