Amazing Adventures #26Romita cover; but, it doesn't do a lot for me, especially compared to last issue (and next). It seems a bit crowded and Killraven is throwing his stars, yet it looks like he is trying to scoop up the villain, at the same time. You can't really tell what he aimed the stars at. Meanwhile, why is Camilla cringing at the wall and why is she the only one with her hands tied? The guys are all armed, why isn't she in the fight? I'm sure it was the old damsel-in-distress trope, to help sell things; but, it really didn't represent the character well. Creative Team: Don McGregor-writer, Gene Colan-pencils, Dan Adkins-inks, Annette Kawecki-letters, Petra Goldberg-colors, Roy Thomas-edits Synopsis: M'Shulla and Killraven are apparently capturing wild mutant horses... Killraven gets thrown around a bit and the rest try to keep him from getting trampled. After KR finally tames the animal (and they spy some wanted posters of our hero), they make camp, where they are watched by unseen eyes. Eventually (and conveniently) the observers come out while Camilla is bathing... They two figures are Rangolar and Foropulist and they are pretty F-in weird lookin'! More attack the main group and the freeman are cautious, as they appear human(if weirdly dressed), but things get nasty. Killraven ends up using a captured ray gun to take out the band. Camilla and Grok show up with the captured Foropulist, who gets the Good Cap/Bad Cop treatment from M'Shulla and Killraven (guess who is the bad cop) He says our band of pumpkin colored warriors are protecting the treasure of Battle Creek, for their master Pstun-Rage the Vigilant. KR and the gang go to investigate and enter the ruins of Battle Creek, while Mcgregor drones on about advertising and the run into Pstun-Rage the Vigilant. The pumpkin guys attack, and Pstun starts swinging a scythe and KR throws stars back. before you know it, Pstun is impaled on his own blade and crawls to his treasure, which turns out to be a horde of cereal box prizes from Post and Kelloggs. Thoughts: Well, first, Gene Colan makes this all kinds of creepy and moody, and absurd, while McGregor belabors the point about the evils of advertising. The treasure turning out to be cereal premiums is telegraphed pretty quickly, and Pstun-Rage is probably some evolution of Post (maybe Raisin bran, or something?) No idea where Foropulist comes from, as I can't find any reference to a name like that, beyond this. He and his buddies look very weird; like a combination of clown and Alice in Wonderland figure (like the guards, for the Queen of Hearts). He will turn up again, cringing even more. We do get teased with a moment, before Rangolar and Foropulist butt in, about Grok's past. He has another name and a secret and I have a suspicion about who he is (I haven't read this in quite a while). We'll see if I am right. Hawk is depicted in pseudo-Native American guard, which is a departure from where he started. He was more of a generic fighter, at the start, with brown hair. Not sure if that was Mcgregor's idea or Colan's or Roy's. This look will remain for him. M'Shulla and Camilla have grown closer and seem fairly buddy-buddy, though no necking, yet. This will also continue and we are left to wonder how he will react when he (and we) learn Grok's secret past and Camilla's part in it. Well, we are about to enter the truly classic part of this series. next issue begins P Craig Russel's run on the book and probably the best storyline; stop back for Death Breeders, including the return of Skar, the introduction to a potential love interest for Killraven (aside from mint Julep, who must have stayed in Washington), and a new take on the Chicago Stockyards. oh, and Foropulist will be there, too.

The villains' names were anagrams for cereals: Pstun-Rage = grapenuts, Foropulist = fruitloops, and Rangolar = granola.

So, let's dive into John Raven and his fight to free Earth. Was KR referred to as John as well as Jonathan? Roy Thomas conceived the idea, though neal was heavily involved in the early stages of development. he saw Killraven as the son of a Doc Savage type of hero, who was working to rebuild civilization, after a Martian re-invasion. he also only wanted to work with Roy, which had been a caveat on his Avengers run, after Roy didn't script an X-Men story and Neal was disappointed. He felt more in tune with Roy. So, when Roy turned the script over to Gerry Conway (probably due to workload), Neal bowed out, which brought in Howard Chaykin. So, the beginning of this is going to feel rather confused and it continues for an issue or two. I think Adams intended the hero to be called the Junkman, and Conway changed the name to Killraven. The Apeslayer link doesn't work - it just took me back to the top of this thread. Here's some info on that: bronzeageofblogs.blogspot.com/2009/02/apeslayer.html

The villains' names were anagrams for cereals: Pstun-Rage = grapenuts, Foropulist = fruitloops, and Rangolar = granola. That's what I was thinking; but, I have been writing these after I get home (late) from work and just didn't have the brainpower to play around with the letters.

Amazing Adventures #27Killraven looks constipated. And what the heck is Camilla doing? She's definitely not the DID type, Jim. Starlin cover; but, I'd like to see him hold that pose with an actual steel sword and a rifle. I give him about 2 minutes before his ribs, back and arms are aching. Looks cool though! Creative Team: Don McGregor-pretty words, P Craig "Gorgeous Men" Russell-pretty pictures, Jack Abel-pleasant inks, John Costanza-amiable letters, Petra Goldberg-soft colors, Roy Thomas-purty edits. Synopsis: "Death Breeders!" Hang on, this is where it gets really good! We were sailing along.... When giant, mutated lampreys attack the boat and badly hurt Grok, before Killraven is finally able to kill it with one of his silver stars. We then cut to Chicago, and the citadel known as "Death Borth," where the real nightmares lives... Humans are kept in pens, like cattle, bred and slaughtered. Adam & Eve 3031 are expecting their child; but don't want to see it born here. Meanwhile, the High overlord has caught up with Skar and dispatches him to hunt down Killraven, who he knows is headed towards Yellowstone. Killraven and the freemen dock in Milwaukee, where they are attacked by a woman and it ain't Laverne or Shirley; it's Volcana Ash... She vamps KR a bit and then he mentally contacts a mind and sees Adam & Eve 3031 humiliated by Atalon, the fear Master. Contact is broken and Killraven is weakened, when they are interrupted by a tripod, bringing the Death Breeders... Killraven dumps one of them in a vat of old beer and then throws in a silver star for good measure, which explodes the mutated brew and takes out the tripod. We end abruptly as KR has decided to go after the Death Breeders. The rest of the issue is a reprint of an old Atlas sci-fi comic, trying for a twist end that pretty much fails. Thoughts: This is where the series becomes a classic. Death breeders is a nightmare vision of a future under Martian domination. Humans are bred as cattle, to feed the Martian masters. Mutated humans act as overseers, like the kapos of the concentration camps. Stormtroopers in skeletal imagery terrorize the countryside and the populace; more death imagery. grok is mortally wounded and we seem to be near the truth of his relationship to Camilla Frost. P Craig Russell is a revelation on this series, though he is yet to reach his heights. Jack Abel does a serviceable job; but, Russell was better when he inked himself or had his mentor, Dan Adkins doing it. He brings a totally new aesthetic to the book, as his figures are more fluid, his nightmares more realized; it's more than weird mutant monsters. The biggest monsters are humans who betray their own to gain a token of power from their overlords. You can't wait to see Atalon get his. The sight of the chained humans, in the filth of the pens is horrific and if you have ever seen Alain Resnais' Night and Fog, you know it isn't far from the nightmares of the Holocaust, with captured film footage of emaciated figures, packed into barracks and boxcars, murdered and cremated in ovens, or dumped in mass graves. Russell is still working within the superhero stereotype; but, he will slowly refine his Killraven, making him sleeker and more nimble, a dancer as much as a warrior. His Killraven is filled with movement and his edges have been softened, give him the lest rugged face that Trimpe gave him and turning them into more delicate, more handsome features. Killraven begins the march of Russell's heroes, which the Comics Journal would note in an interview, "You draw the most beautiful men." To which PCR replied, "It's probably because I'm gay." Until that time, I had no idea the PCR was gay. I just assumed he was following his influences, the pre-Raphaelites and Art Nouveau stylists, rather than the Kirby disciples. It never occured to me that Russell enjoyed the male form more than the female, on any level. Even so, he handles the female form well and creates real women in his pages, with Camilla, Volcana and Eve 3031 presenting three very distinct ladies, yet all with their own form of beauty and character. A lot of the early Killraven issues are a bit generic; but, the death Breeders storyline is a must-read.

Amazing Adventures #28Russell cover, upping the game a bit (following Starlin's lead) More foreground detail vs background, emphasizing Killraven more. It is more about him than the War of the Worlds, despite the logo. As we will see, that will change, as well. Volcana is also giving us a tease of what is to come, inside. Meanwhile, you could sell this as a lucha libre match: Killraven contra La Parka! Creative Team: Don McGregor-lots of words, P Craig Russell-lots of art, Roger Slifer-tons of letters, Roy Thomas-lots of work. Synopsis: Don reminds us who is the star of this book, and to ensure we don't forget his name, he puts it there 4 times... Wait, what's his name? Mortallywoundingcrow? M'Shulla's doing a bit of fishing, when he hooks a big one, which jumps clean over the boat, snapping his rod in two... Should have seen the one that got away! M'Shulla's forearm gets chomped, before KR can stick his sword in the fish and Volcana ends things with an instant fish fry. Grok is still dying of his wounds from the mutant lamprey and we get the backstory of Volcana, whose parents were killed in a Martian tripod attack and she was torn from her sister, Melony (or Mellonie, depending on which page you read; Roger screwed up, or Don mistyped one page). She was then subjected to experiments by the Martians' scientists, the Keepers... Melonie became one of the Eves, bred to create delicacies for the Martian overlords. And, on that note, we cut to Death Birth and Adam & Eve 3031, with Atalon being a pr@#$... Adam kicks Atalon in the goolies and gets beaten by the Death Breeders, his face shoved into the muck, by Atalon, then dragged off for execution. Atalon then takes Eve down into the Death Birth complex, as PCR gets all futuristic and stylish... Meanwhile, our two favorite past issue characters meet up, as Skar interrogates Foropulist about Killraven... Poor Foropulist; I knew him, Toucan Sam.... KR and the freeman reach the outskirts of Death Birth and ambush some Death Breeders, conveniently rescuing Adam 3031 from execution. Then, KR mindtaps Eve or someone inside Death Birth and sees what is happening. Eve is brought before the Sacrificer and we see the head waiter Death Breeder, who gets a silver star in the gullet, as KR and the Freeman crash trough, killing everyone in sight. KR sticks a martian and it has unintended consequences... Killraven taps the dying mind of the Martian and nearly dies himself, until Volcana lives up to her name and flash fries the whole place. The gang hotfoots it out, as Adam moans about Atalon having Eve and the head for her, as we see her brought before your worst nightmare of a doctor... KR and the gang free Eve and reunite the couple, while KR and Old Skull look on. Thoughts: My favorite single issue of the series! It was also the first issue I ever read. My cousin had it, and a few of the other ones (the PCR issues) and it hooked me, instantly. Russells inks himself and does the colors and this is the best looking issue, so far (no disrespect to Neal Adams). Russell captures the emotion of the characters well, from the desperation of Adam, the fatal resignation of Eve, the slimy leering of Atalon, Skar's nasty face, Foropulist's fear, Killraven's revelation; all of it. he also crafts a nightmare world. herb Trimpe crafted some excellent monsters; but, PCR makes them seem even nastier. Then, he gives us the perfect nightmare, in the Sacrificer, the horror film model of a surgeon, complete with ultra-scarry scalpel arm. It makes you want to run screaming. The page of Volcan's backstory, as we see the experimentation, really sells the idea of unspeakable scientific horrors unleashed upon her. McGregor takes us on an emotional ride, scaring the wee-wee out of us with monsters and nasties, then touching us with tender moments, then giving us the satisfaction of seeing a few baddies get their just desserts. He still belabors a point or two (or ten); but, there is a ton of meat in this story. The issue ends with another reprint of a minor Atlas mystery story, as a magician is hit by a truck, yet escapes death. yeah, Rod Serling did it better (or, rather, his writers did).

Amazing Adventures #29The World's Grumpiest Flight Attendant...... "I said sit down and fasten your seat belts while the plane is climbing to altitude!" Note that the title of the series is now Killraven, Warrior of Worlds. Available for parties and bar mitzvahs. Creative Team: Don, Craig, Dave and Len (Mcgregor, Russell, Hunt and Wein; that is) Synopsis: KR and the gang (nice name for an R&B band) are skeedaddling away from the Sacrificer... Sacrificer and Atalon get bitchy with each other and Eve 3031 is starting to have contractions. KR stops to send of hologram message to the holding pens then releases all of the prisoners, telling them they can go free. The Sacrifier finds the dead Martians and gets a tad peeved and Volcana meets up with her sister Melonie... However, Melonie has no memory and Volcana suffers loss again. KR comforts her. Atalan does a Braveheart speech and the Sacrificer does a Hitler rant... KR hits the Crucible Center to destroy the power of the complex and the guards attack, but get whooped. KR sticks his ionic blade into the reactor and destroys the entire complex, while they escape in skimmers. They stop to pick up Camilla, M'Shulla and the still dying Grok, interrupting Camilla as she was about to reveal who Grok was, not to mention delaying comics' first interracial kiss. The head off and KR notes that they are being pursued. He turns and amushes a couple, while Volcana fries one or two and they leave Death breeders and Crucible guard bodies in the snow. Atalon isn't happy. Thoughts: Lots of escape and mayhem, while Volcana finds her sister, only to realize she died years ago, when the Martians took her. All that is left is another Eve. Eve 3031 is about ready to give birth, which makes things even more dangerous. M'Shulla and Camilla are on the cusp of a real romance. Apparently, Killraven retrieved his ionic blade, after shoving it into the reactor, as he has it later, though we never see him take it back; just shove it in and release it. Issue 30 is the dreaded Deadline Doom issue, as it reprints parts of issues 23 & 24, with a new framing sequence, and some character data sheets... We'll return to our story, already in progress, in issue #31.

Amazing Adventures #31We now resume our previous story... Creative Team: Don McGregor-story, P Craig Russell-art, Irv Watanabe-letters, Petra Goldberg-colors, Len Wein-edits. Guess doing everything was slowing PCR down too much, as he turned over the coloring. Synopsis: KR and friends stop at some ruined monuments to rest... Hmmmmmm, a yellow, almost golden arch.................. They are attacked by robotic serpent bloodhounds and fight them off, while Atalon and the Sacrificer continue to bitch at one another, like an old married couple. The freed human cattle slowly march past the archway... The provide offerings and bow to the symbol. Skar continues tracking Killraven, finding the dead lamprey and the ice boat. He comes across the old sailor and interrogates him, then burns his hands, leaving him helpless. Skar is a real Richard! The freemene take shelter in a cave, as Eve is probably in labor and Grok continues dying. M'Shulla and Camilla go off and talk and finally lock lips... But, then the Devourer that everyone mentions in whispers turns up; yet another mutated monster... They fight and Atalon and Sacrificer turn up. Atalon gets knocked down by the monster, which Killraven kills by shooting down a stalactite, which impales the creature. Sacrificer attacks him from behind and they battle near the arch, which falls and crushes Sacrificer. Then, Adam kicks the s@#$ out of Atalon, before turning his back when Atalon recovers, causing Volcana to flash fry him. The end ing has the source of the monument revealed, as it is one of the McDonald's Golden Arches. Thoughts: After interruptions, back-up filler and other distractions, McGregor wraps up the whole death breeders story, with a vague comment about McDonalds and consumption. McGregor attempts poetry and profound thoughts; but, he did better with Black Panther. He's overloading things here, but, at least PCR is filling the pages with wonder and action. We get comics' first interracial kiss (depending on how you view the Dragon Lady, in Terry & the Pirates. Whatever the case, this is a milestone for the Big Two. Grok is still dying; but, M'Shulla and Camilla are officially "an item." Death Breeders was probably the most nightmarish vision in all of the Killraven saga, as it wasn't just monsters and mutants; it was humanity stolen and used as cattle. The idea wasn't that original; but, it was well executed. Atalon was the worst kind of scum, a turncoat, seduced by power. The Sacrificer is walking body horror. Skar is still looking for a rematch and getting closer. Killraven gets a liplock from Volcana We are starting to see touches of the PCR we know, as he slowly begins subverting his own work.

Amazing Adventures #32Creative Team: Don McGregor-writer, P Craig Russel-pencils, Dan Green-inks, Dave Hunt-letters, Petra Goldberg-colors, Len Wein-editor Looks like Russell needed help, as he has not only surrendered colors but inks. Synopsis: The gang is in Nashville, trying to break into the country music industry... Actually, they have broken into a theater devoted to mural phonics; music videos of the future... Before you can say Martha Quinn's Trivia Question, it gets pretty trippy and everyone is having visions and stuff, ranging from dead Grok's to Disney squirrels knocking on the head. Hawk tells of his father ecoming addicted to mural phonics, as greedy corporations took away their land. Old Skull faces a dragon, which KR slays, then it disappears. Oh, and Skar finds the ruins of Death Birth. Thoughts: It's all one big laser light show, showcasing PCR's art, while McGregor tries to be profound and poetic. I think these guys needed to pull back from whatever substances they might have been enjoying. I'm surprised they didn't put this issue out as a special black light poster. Basically, not a damn thing happens in it, other than we get snippets of their pasts, before the Martians. Not sure why they are in Nashville, when they were trying to get to Yellowstone. The splash page says they are lost; but, man, that's lost!

Amazing Adventures #33Creative Team: Bill Mantlo-writer, Herb Trimpe-pencils, D Bruce Berry-inks, Karen Mantlo-letters, Janice Cohen-colors, Marv Wolfman-edits Uh, oh; looks like a fill in issues. Even the future of 2019 had the dreaded deadline doom! Synopsis: The team is.... I can't even make a pretense of reviewing this. This is a really awful story, commissioned to fill a gap, with no connection to what was going on in previous issues. Mantlo hacks out a very bad story about a group of African-American survivors, living in caves under West Virginia, who capture Killraven and are going to kill him, because he is white. They felt the Martian attack was retribution for racist attacks on blacks, in the past. They've also sacrificed their own infants to some Martian monster, which Killraven taps into in a vision. It's just badly written and would have never flown past an editor who cared about anything other than getting an issue, any issue on the stands. This exemplifies what Jim Shooter has criticised, about past EIC regimes. here, he has a point. Mantlo tries for a Twilight Zone kind of thing and fails miserably. These white hating survivors change their collective minds, because Killraven dives into the water to rescue a warrior drug under, by the monster. Don McGregor may have overwritten his issues; but, at least he had something of substance to say, even if it took him forever to get to the point. Mantlo doesn't even have a point. McGregor handles racial issues with far better subtlety (for comics) and presented more complex characters. he was too wrapped up in being poetic and experimenting, which bogged down some of his stories; but, even then, they were interesting, if long winded diversions. Nothing against the art as they obviously had to crank it out. Herb still does a good monster though. Grok is neither seen nor mentioned, though he was still alive. Unless you are a completist, skip this one.

Amazing Adventures #34Creative Team: Don McGregor-writer, P Craig Russell-art, Denise Wohl-letters, Petra Goldberg-colors, Marv Wolfman-edits Synopsis: Don mcGregor runs off at the mouth about families... ...so you know what is coming. Killraven, M'Shulla and Camilla are racing mutant beast at a track, in Chattanooga (I think they meant Louisville, for Churchill Downs; but, who knows?) Camilla wins and they go exploring. Old Skull and Hawk are debating the finer points of music, while Grok continues to die. Then, Skar shows up! He launches his attack and hits Old Skull with fire. Meanwhile, the rest are exploring and KR finally forces Camilla to reveal the obvious truth of Grok, that he is a clone of her father. He was a scientist, specializing in cloning. The Martians captured them and killed the father with their tentacles. they forced Camilla to clone him, in the body of Grok. Skar checks on Old Skull, who appears dead. he spots Hawk and goes after him, firing energy from his eye (socket?). Hawk hides behind a boulder and Skar stalks him. The trio shows up and finds Old Skull, who is alive, but hurt bad. Killraven picks up Hawk's weapon and goes after Skar... M'Shulla goes after Skar's tripod and disables its weapons. Camilla draws a bead on Skar, but he rips her weapon from her hand, magnetically or telekinetically, or something. He goes to kill Camilla when M'Shulla comes to the rescue. Then, Killraven attacks, to save M'Shulla... Skar shrugs off his attack and blasts some rocks above. Grok is under the path and Hawk tries to save him; but, both are crushed under the landslide. Killraven grabs a blaster and cuts Skar to pieces, pounding on the remains, who go out about as easy as the Terminator. He is still laughing as Killraven cries out in anguish. Thoughts: Well that makes up for the gap and the pathetic previous issue. You knew Skar's return was going to be epic and he proved to be a bad mutha....It turns out he is a cyborg, which explains why he was the master of the tripod and a relentless killing machine. Grok's past was telegraphed way before, so it was less a revelation and more a confirmation. Still, the delay in his death was a bit much, as he has been dying since the lamprey got him, in issue 27. The splash page told us two would die, with Old Skull being a red herring. I think most readers, going into it, were assuming Grok ar one. Nice to have PCR inking himself, again.

Volcana Ash always seemed so odd to me, as this token superhuman in the group. It's kind of surprising nobody has brought her crosstime to join the Defenders or something, although I guess her powers aren't different enough from other people who are out there.
I've not been commenting much but these McGregor/Russell issues are some of my favorite comics and I've been enjoying the recaps.

Amazing Adventures #35PCR cover, but it's kind of busy; not one of my favorites. Creative Team: Don McGregor-writer, P Craig Russel-layouts (uh-oh), Kieth Giffen-pencils, Jack Abel-inks, Irv Watanabe-letters, Janice Cohen-colors, Marv Wolfman-editor. In doing these reviews, it is interesting to spot the mid-70s turmoil in the EIC, as we transition from Roy to Len to Marv; and, later, to Gerry, Archie and Shooter. I noticed it quite handily in Defenders, especially when Conway took over. It is less prevalent here, as the only noticeable changes were the transition from calling the series War of the Worlds to Killraven, and now back to War of the Worlds. Other than that, there was the handling of deadline problems. Under Len, they ran a reprint with a new bookending piece. Under Marv, we had a fill-in standing by. Len's approach kept a tighter connection to the previous story, while Marv's felt like having your afternoon tv interrupted by an After-School Special, that was lame. Dammit, I wanted to see Gilligan's Island and the Partridge Family, not some nonsense about teenagers using drugs! This time, at least, it appears that we are resorting to fill in artists to stay on schedule, as PCR is doing loose breakdowns, for Giffen and Abel. Ironically, Giffen is usually the one doing loose breakdowns, while the inker is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Synopsis: The gang is just outside of Atlanta, trying to find Peachtree Street, while they keep turning onto the wrong road (Peachtree Blvd, Peachtree Ave, Peachtree Way, Peachtree Circle, Peachtree Pkwy, etc, etc...) They are on their way to Techwood Drive, to the WTBS studios, to watch Georgia Championship Wrestling being taped...oh, wait, that was my fantasy. They are at a cemetary and run into some wild woman, who spouts about bearing the child of G'Rath and runs off ranting, while McGregor runs off at the typewriter about someone called Emmanuel. They follow her and she runs into a monster (duh!), who is, apparently, G'Rath... Ewww............. KR and the Gang attack (in tightly choreographed movement, as with all funk bands) and G'Rath defends by firing back spines, which part M'Shulla's hair. Then, Emmanuel shows up, looking like a cross between Marvin the Martian and the Jolly Green Giant. He grabs Camilla's wrists and then fires spines at the freemen. They head for cover. Then, Emmanuel gets all Harvey Weinstein on Camilla and carries her off... M'Shulla ain't have no Martian man mess with his woman and he chases after them, only for KR to tackle him before he runs into G'rath. Camilla and Emanuel have disappeared! They go searching and KR remarks on how M'Shulla reacts to Camilla and then notes a similarity between Emmanuel and the corpse which the human woman was kneeling over. They go looking further, as Emmanuel watches from a hiding spot, while he keeps his hand over Camilla's mouth, to keep her quiet. When the coast is clear he rambles about his mother and the shortness of his life and tells Camilla that she has been brought to be the mother of an entire race, with G'Rath as the father. She is far from happy about that. It seems that each member of the race only lives for 24 hours and must find a mate for the enxt. The Freemen turn up and fight and Emmanuel merges with G'Rath. Camilla blasts the creature multiple times, until her weapon is spent. It wraps her in tentacles (ewwww.....) and then collapses and dies and emmanuel, who had reappeared riding G'Rath, dies and disintegrates. We end with the human woman ranting again and Old Skull asking what would happen if Emmanuel had a child who was a daughter? Thoughts: Weird but engaging story, mostly about biological imperatives. McGregor is still waxing poetic, though the art mixes creepy and exciting. I miss full PCR art; but, this trio proves pretty effective, all things considered. I have no idea if the Romanesque armor on Emmanuel was meant as an inside joke, though I kept hearing Emmanuel's voice, in my head, as a high pitched nasal tone. Isn't that lovely?

Ps-The title change was originally done because they felt it would boost sales. It turned out to have the opposite effect, as sales dropped. The reinstatement of the title shows the state the book is in, which would not go unnoticed by fans and will be the subjects of comments in the letters column, as it becomes clear that the end is nigh.
