Killraven #5
I take it back; this is more like an Amish woman, for this series.
Creative Team: Alan Davis.........................................(mumble).................
Synopsis: The Keepers are gathered, arguing about Killraven. It is revealed that he was able to escape because he could resist the Sirens and it is speculated that his brain differences may also account for why he doesn't turn up on scanners and why he survived the gladiatorial arena so long. A martian listens and communicates via a speaker, who appears to be some altered humanoid, who has something from the Havok line of headware...
Killraven's capture is considered a priority, to fully understand humans. So, he's got that going for him.
Carmilla and Volcanna are walking around in the snow, as the weather is all freaky. Volcanna is covered up; but, Carmilla still favors the biki look, ender a cloak. Even game of Thrones had more concessions to the weather!
We see Hawk is living high, despite avoiding most of the fights, as Killraven and the freemen have remained with the people who live around Washington. John turns out to be a technological genius and knows something of military strategy, as he has cracked the secrets of the Martian weapons, to eliminate the tracking mechanisms and also the weaknesses of the tripods. Martians developed weapons specifically for the earth environment; but, have no air cover or satellite intel; so, they can't fight guerilla warfare well, since tripods were designed to face large scale conventional forces. Um, okay, that doesn't totally track; but, we'll let it pass.
Carmilla is ticked off about talk of fighting and storms off, with Volcanna following, and she informs Volcanna that she is pregnant. Maury Povich says M'Shulla is the father. Then, it is tripod time!
Killraven runs into Skarlett, leader of the Sirens (with the big....klaxons). She tries to mind whammy KR, with the help of the other gals; but, he beats it. We see them laid out and the Keepers' soldiers try their hand and find that they are FUBAR!. KR worries about the rest of the village and finds them alive, having beaten the martians, with their own weapons. Hawk is crowing and KR calls him out, then John shows up with a computer that says the Martians can be beaten in one strike...
The team heads to the Martian citadel and Davis finally gets to let his imagination run wild a bit, though it has a strong Roger Dean look to it...
with a bit of Thundarr
Anyway, M'Shulla keeps baiting Hawk, who is wearing armor and carries a steel sword, rather than the Martian weapons. Finally, Killraven confronts Hawk and his blades suddenly retract and all of their weapons are rendered useless. hawk presses his advantage; but, Killraven takes him down like the Road Warriors mowing down some jobbers, on tv...
then, to quote Admiral Ackbar....
Thoughts: Put on some Jerry Lee Lewis, 'cause there's a whole lot a shakin' goin' on! Lots of stuff happening, lots of exposition, lots of twists and turns, lots of action in the second half. Killraven isn't the sharpest knife in the Ginsu set; so, a trap was inevitable and they have been telegraphing a confrontation with Hawk. John being a techno-wizard and expert on military strategy comes out of left field, though the first issue establishes that he has been educated with computer tapes of the past. The strategy element just seems a bit unlikely. The idea that guerrilla activity will be successful, due to a lack of air cover holds no water. The VC were effective despite US air power, because they were hidden in the jungle. Guerrilla warfare succeeds or fails based on being able to surprise your enemy and keep them off balance. Counter-guerrilla fighting involves hunting down the guerrillas to their lair and wiping them out. We see the Martians are elarning, as they bait a trap to draw out the freemen, then capture them, with the help of a plant: Grok.
Pretty exciting issue, as we are reaching the climax to things.
