Had my first day off from work in 13 days today, and had a bit of cabin fever with spring having sprung, so I jumped in the car and did a driving tour of a lot of local thrift stores and such today.
The first place I stopped, I had never been to before, and they didn't have much, but did have some vinyl. I am not much of a record collector, but I do pick up interesting album cover art when I see it much the way I do with vintage paperback cover art. I did find one interesting cover-the album The Ark by the Animals (featuring Eric Burdon) from 1983...
interesting comic book style art, the artists is not someone I knew though (his last name was Power or Powers, but I can't recall his fist name off hand). It was a whopping $2 for the record, and it is in excellent condition.
Next stop was the Animal Welfare League thrift store, where I picked up a couple of books and a couple of DVDs for under $5.
One of the books was a paperback about the Rolling Stones-Up and Down with the Rolling Stones by Tony Sanchez...
and the other was the novelization of the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes movies-these were 25 cents each.
I also found a DVD copy of Kurosawa's Yojimbo from the Criterion Collection and a collection of 4 Hitchcock films on DVD (39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, The Man Who Knew Too Much and Sabotage) for $2 each.
Next stop was the Goodwill on my side of town, and they didn't have much. I did pick up a hardcover copy of Eric Clapton's autobiography Clapton for $2, and a pair of Star Wars novels for a buck each.
I headed to the other side of town, and ended up checking out the Goodwill over there, and here, I found a bunch of stuff.
First thing I found was a near new copy of March Book One in with the paperbacks, which meant it was 99 cents...
Most of the paperbacks were Romance serials and Halequin clones, but I did hit a huge pile of Louis Lamour books. I had been wanting to sample some, so I picked up the bunch for a dollar each including...
The Daybreakers (Sacketts)
Dark Canyon
Brionne
The Sky-Liners (Sacketts)
Jubal Sackett
Sackett's LAnd (book 1 of the Sackett's Saga)
Trouble Shooter (Hopalong Cassidy)
Down the Long Hills
Fair Blows the Wind
there was also one Zane Gray novel-The Heritage of the Desert, so I snagged that too. All these were 99 cents each.
They also had 6 of the 7 Narnia novels (they were missong book 5) in the paperback edition I discovered them in...
and a copy of the Hobbit in paperback from the late 60s-early 70s...
The Narnia books and Hobbits were considered children's books and were 79 cents, but if you bought 10, it was $5 for the bundle. Since I was so close, the manager who rung me out counted 3 of the Lamour books as kids books and gave me the bundle deal.
I also picked up a couple of DVDs while there, all the DVDs were $2.99 each...
the had the animated version of Marjane Satrapi's PErsepolis movie, which I picked up.
I picked up a pair of Steve Reeves Peplum (i.e. Italian sword and sandal) movies-The Giant of Marathon and Hercules Unchained.
The other two I picked up were the Vin Diesel sci-fi flicks Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, which are a guilty pleasure of mine but which I have never owned on DVD.
There were a couple of other thrift stores in town I wanted to hit, but they were closed on Mondays, so I will probably check them out on Thursday.
I also stopped at a Big Lots on the way home (not quite a thrift store, but you can get some decent at good prices, and they had just gotten in a shipment of bargain DVD and blu-rays, so I picked up a handful including...
Peter Jackson's King Kong on blu-ray for $5
the Daredevil Director's cut on blu-ray for $3
The Raven (a movie featuring Poe as a character played by John Cusack) on blu-ray for $3
Alien Resurrection on blu-ray for $3
Ray Donovan the first season of the Showtime series featuring Lieve Schrieber on DVD for $5
a pair of Roger Moore Bond films, Octopussy and The Man with the Golden Gun on DVD for $5 each
The Howard Hawks version of To Have and Have Not featuring Bogey and Bacall on DVD on clearance for $2.50
and a trio of Wuxia martial arts films on DVD for $2.88 each-Donnie Yen in Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen, Derek Yee's Sword Master, and Gintama based on the manga about an alien invasion during the Edo-period of Japan.
Lots of interesting stuff to keep me and the wife occupied over the next few months. But it was enjoyable just to get out on a nice spring day, do a little hunting for treasures, and just unwind after a few weeks of being shorthanded at work.
