My wife is a banker, and one of her clients at work just opened up an antiques/collectibles/vintage electronics shop that sells video games, movies, toys, collectibles and other stuff. She has had a couple of conversations with the guy about collecting, geek stuff and such, and told me about the store but I hadn't had a chance to go yet (it's a couple blocks down form the branch she works at). Since her vacation started today, we drove over and she introduced me to the guy and I took a look around the shop while Amy went to the cookie shop next door to procure some sweet treats. I looked around a little bi, talked shop with the guy a bit (e have a lot of mutual acquaintances among dealers, fellow collectors and such, and travel in the same circles but hadn't met before. I picked up a few things while I was there (ignore the price tags as they are not form the store, the whole pile was $11 but I got it for $8, it's good to have connections- ) DVDs are usually a buck each, $3 for a tv season or boxed set/movie collection, and bluray $3. All paperbacks are a buck. The Battlestar Galactica novelization... A Bogart classic and a Tarzan movie collection... Batman: TAS season 4 (I had seasons 1-3 already) and a Mill Creek sci-fi collection with 50 films... We also talked about stuff I am looking for, stuff he is looking for and he told me they have boxes of vintage sci-fi paperbacks they haven't processed or brought to the shop yet and they will all be $1 each when they do, and he's going to give me a call when he brings them in so I can go take a look. I also got a list of stuff he is always looking to buy for his own collection and for the shop, so I can pass things along to him if I find them or give him a head's up when I see stuff, so this could be the beginning of a productive association. Networking and getting to know fellow collectors is part of the joy of the hobby. -M

Went back to that same shop today because the owner was interested in a couple of the extra modern Megos I had (I was working out a trade and had some extra carded figures from the Target 2018 releases), and last time there I hadn't had time to go through his vinyl. So I ended up trading a couple of the Megos for some vintage vinyl and a couple of DVDs... As I have stated before, my taste in vinyl is as much about the artwork as the music in some cases, and one of my favorites is Roger Dean, and he had a quartet of classic Yes albums featuring Dean's art, including the triple album Yessongs with a tri-gate cover and lots of extra Dean works... so among the albums were Relayer... Fragile... Yesterdays... and the aforementioned Yessongs... with the interior panels... the records themselves were all immaculately clean and scratch-free. I used to be a huge Yes fan (I've seen them live about 6-7 times), but hadn't listened to them much for several years and had purged most of my CDs including most of the Yes albums a few years back, but a couple months ago I got a bug to listen to Close to the Edge and a few others and I have been listening to a little bit more Yes recently, so these will get some play as well as being great art pieces. I also picked up a pair or classic Steve Miller albums-Book of Dreams was the first 8 track I ever had, never had the vinyl and I only had a couple of 45's form Fly Like an Eagle, never the whole album, but now I have the pair... again the records themselves were clean and scratch-free, and will get more than a few spins on my turntable. As for the DVDs... the classic 30s version of King Kong, the first volume of Richard Greene's Adventures of Robin Hood tv series and a 4 movie compilation that had both Logan's Run and Omega Man on it (plus Dark City, which I liked, and the Will Smith version of I am Legend which I was meh on). They've got several totes full on vintage sci-fi paperbacks they will be bringing into the shop, and they took my e-mail so they can give me first crack when they are ready to bring them into the shop, so I will be stopping back in again in the not too distant future. -M

Oh yes, those Yes albums were a big part of the soundtrack of my first two years of college (1974-76), along with Pink Floyd, ELP, Renaissance, and Steve Miller.

Stopped at a tag sale before work on Friday, didn't find much, but did find these for 50 cents each... ah classic Viewmaster reels. Now these bring back a lot of memories. I don't think I had these as a kid (I may have had the Shazam ones as I think they were part of the DC super-hero gift set I had but I cannot remember for sure), but I loved Viewmaster reels as a kid and had a whole bunch of them ranging from G.I. Joe Adventure team to Flintstones to Iron Man to the Hair Bear Bunch. -M

While I was at Half Price books selling some stuff, I picked up a handful of vintage paperbacks for $2 or $3 each... checked another Doc Savage novel off the list, and got two more of the first generation of Trek novels. I wasn't familiar with the Andre Norton novel, but it had a gorgeous Gray Morrow cover, so I snagged it. And A Canticle for Liebowitz is one of the those sci-fi classics I have never owned or read, but I keep seeing it mentioned of late, so when I saw a copy, I snagged it. -M

Had my first day off from work in 13 days today, and had a bit of cabin fever with spring having sprung, so I jumped in the car and did a driving tour of a lot of local thrift stores and such today. The first place I stopped, I had never been to before, and they didn't have much, but did have some vinyl. I am not much of a record collector, but I do pick up interesting album cover art when I see it much the way I do with vintage paperback cover art. I did find one interesting cover-the album The Ark by the Animals (featuring Eric Burdon) from 1983... interesting comic book style art, the artists is not someone I knew though (his last name was Power or Powers, but I can't recall his fist name off hand). It was a whopping $2 for the record, and it is in excellent condition. Wikipedia says the artist is Paul S. Power from Australia... a little more snooping says he was an Animation artist who worked with Toth and eve inked some of his work. He seems to have made his living since then as a storyboard artist for movies, with credits from The Goonies, Robocop, Predator, The Tick, etc. Apparently, he is still doing comics work, and has some work being published this year.

I first encountered it in my small-town public library in the early 80's, and it was the ONLY book about comics they had. I checked it out and re-read it a thousand times. It was surely one of the first book to reproduce classic comics photographically, with the aged yellow paper, ben-day dots and all, something that's pretty commonplace, now when reproducing comics for which no original art is available, or the expense of recreating it is too high. It features some of the greatest comics, ever, and was the first place I read EC, Plastic Man, Little Lulu, and the Spirit, which I fell in love with instantly. A while back, Barnes and Noble reprinted it at a VERY affordable price (>$20), and that's the copy I own today, and may be the version you purchased. I believe the original printing was actually published by the Smithsonian and was meant to be a companion to an exhibit at the time. There is also a MUCH larger book about newspaper comics (from 1977), that my in-laws bought for me for christmas one year, from - you guessed it - a thrift store. They are two of my favorite books in my collection.

Having gone thrifting in a while, and didn't intend to today, but when I stopped by my local library, the had just put a ton of TV season DVDs in their discard sale rack for 25 cents each. I came home with 17 seasons of TV (18 sets, one had a season divided into 2 parts) for $4.50. Arrow Season 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 Black Lightning Season 1-3 The Expanse Season 1-3 Legion X Season 1-2 The Jetsons Season 1-3 Not sure when or how long it will take me to watch all of that, but at 25 cents each, it was hard to pass up. -M
