Forty years ago this month, Starblazer, published by DC Thomson, began publication. It would run for 281 issues. Here's the cover for the first issue: Pretty sure I had this one: Final issue: DC Thomson also published Commando. Like Commando, Starblazer was published in a small format (A5-sized). Anyone remember this? I became aware of it in the late 80s and picked up a few until its demise in '91.

I had a few of the early issues, but can't recall much about the stories. Starblazer and Commando were both smaller than A5. Grant Morrison wrote and drew #15 before he was famous, the Argentine artists Enrique Alcatena and Alberto Saichann drew several issues, and the great Ian Kennedy contributed numerous covers. I think Mike McMahon drew one issue, but I've never seen it.

The expression on that guy's face in the last one makes me think the horns stick in, on the inside of the helmet!

I've got to learn paper sizes. I will Google. If I have it right, A4 would be TIME Magazine, right? A3 is bigger. Is Commando A6-sized?

A4 is about 8.3x11.7 (in), A6 is 4.1x5.8; or, about digest size, for the US. A3 is11.7x16.5 (slightly wider but shorter than standard 11x17 Tabloid, in the US). I sawa picture of a Commando issue, once, and I do think it was more like a digest. The Italian comic Diabolik and other fumetti were also done digest size.

Afraid not, couldn't find any (and don't have any personal copies).

I remember seeing Starblazer on the newsagent's shelves as a kid from time to time, but it wasn't as common a sight as Commando (which were the same weird 7" × 5½" size). I did sometimes buy Commando comics, but my comic buying funds usually went on Star Wars Weekly, 2000 AD, or various Marvel superhero reprints. I only ever bought one issue of Starblazer, I think...despite being into sci-fi and space fantasy as a kid. It was issue #111 "Space Ghost", and I still have it in my collection.

I've just remembered that another title in the same format was Football Picture Story Monthly:

I've just remembered that another title in the same format was Football Picture Story Monthly: Wow! I've never seen or heard of that before. I've always hated football though, so this would've been nice of no interest to me.
