If money were no object, I'd love to work in a comic book store.

I lived in Rochester, NY up until two and a half years ago, and for whatever reason, there are like 7 comic book stores there! A comic book Mecca! I just hope they're still in business.

If money were no object, I'd love to work in a comic book store. All depends on the store and location! If it is one of the shops specializing in Card games and always full of argumentative self entitled brats/punks/teens who are always rude and obnoxious to EVERYONE else in the store, then no thanks. A nice quiet and slow store somewhere on the outskirts of town with only a few customers and slow days where you can read aplenty, NOW THAT IS A JOB I WANT The LCS I frequent most of the, time as it is on my drive home (so readily accessible) has great staff and I feel their pain every Thursday/Friday when new comics arrive. The business is double to triple the regular during certain times of the day and I have seen 1st hand just how rude, demanding, entitled, obnoxious and annoying shoppers can become. Even worse when dealing with the "speculators" who will drive the staff insane over every tiny spot of dust or perceived imperfection in search of "mint" new issues. Then of course there are those 1st timers or parents who have no clue about what or how an LCS functions.

Rude, demanding, entitled and obnoxious passengers, while thankfully in the minority, make me wish there was a moonbase where such people could live.

I try to be nice to everyone but usually an hour into my workday there is always someone that is so rude and demanding that they get me mad.
I have been verbally abused by patients because they did not get what they think they needed or wanted. Only called the police once when a patient started to make physical threats.

I'd love to set up a comic shop and spend large amounts of time there, but I would never want to be financially invested in a comic shop, even if it's just "You have to stay here all day if you want your paycheck". I feel like it would lose some of the magic if it became an obligation.

If I were independently wealthy and just needed something to do to pass time, opening a shop would be fun.

I worked in a comic book store helping my dear friend Jeff after his shop is closed just to do inventory and we spend about 2 hours doing so for 3 weeks on a quarterly basis and it was fun, quiet, and just the two of us working together. Afterwards, we hit our favorite steakhouse and got a great steak dinner on top of it. That's my reward for helping him and I also got $30.00 in store credits too. I miss those days and he already sold his shop and it's still running today. I did that for 25 years until 2016.

Haven't been into a LCS since late 2014, and don't miss going to them at all. Remember it's not just the money that you're saving when you're buying CE's (or anything else) from an online retailer like Amazon vs. a brick & mortar store. There are other elements to consider as well:
1) Time & hassle, which you can't put a price on. My last LCS was a 40-45 minutes drive from me (each way), and I usually went there around once a month (it was too much hassle to go every week). It was also in an area that has a lot of heavy traffic, so I hated having to navigate this in order to get to the store. Conversely, it's obviously a lot easier to get something delivered to my door, and requires minimal effort.
2) My LCS would sometimes make mistakes & not hold items for me that I had requested. So, when I wanted something & they hadn't held it for me, in many cases they were sold out & I wasn't able to get the item (from them, at least).
Taking all of this into account, I can honestly say that even if I weren't saving money by buying items online, I would still buy online - even if the costs of books @ my LCS & the online vendor were equal. The convenience of purchasing online can't be emphasized enough.
The one advantage I can see about going to a LCS is if you still collect floppies; I know you can get delivery service for those, but it would be more difficult to ensure they're delivered in good shape re: the possibility that they'll bend, etc. However, I stopped collecting floppies years ago, so that's not an issue for me

Then of course there are those 1st timers or parents who have no clue about what or how an LCS functions. First time customers, you mean? The essential lifeblood of any business? Jeez, heaven forbid that the staff in a comic book shop should have to go out of their way to help or advise a new customer. And people wonder why comic shops are closing down.

Not every comic book shop is in trouble like yours.
the comic book shop that I have been going to for a few years they're doing just fine with problems. theve been doing quite well with not just old back isuses but also new comics and even Funko Pop and old action figures in the glass cabinets and trading cards.
So pretty much the comic book shop that I go to once every couple of months theyre doing fine and not closing or whatever.

It's not just an issue of "mine" versus "yours"...it's the comic book retail landscape as a whole that is doing poorly. That your shop is doing well doesn't refute the facts that dozens of stores have closed their doors in the last year and there haven't been many to replace them and when that happens in a field of stores that was already small to begin with then it's an ominous sign.

Since I was 18 years old my answer whenever anyone asks me 'what would you do if you won the lottery' or 'what would you do with x dollars' has been 'pay my bills then open a comic book store'
