...Hey all! Oh, how I have missed you all quite terribly! At my church, my pastor does a sermon every year with a series called Superhero Parables and it had me thinking about you! Then it gets me thinking...I went to see the new Captain Marvel movie a bit ago. I was hesitant that they would do a bad job, but was quite surprised at how well I thought they did. In your opinions...how do you think they did in the movie vs. the comic books? Was it cannon? Do you think they did her justice?
ALSO...I saw an interview with Mr. Krueger from Marvel. He was saying that in the Batman series...Alfred is the true hero of the story. Without him, Batman couldn't do what he does. Batman is in the city..in the businesses...in the community. Alfred patches him up. Supports him. Encourages him. Scolds him. Alfred is the hero maker. What is your thoughts about this?
I also wanted to thank the two wonderful men (you know who you are) who nominated me the the new member award! Life getting in the way of my fun kept me away for quite some time but I am happy to be back and seeing that in my messages made me smile from ear to ear. You are my comic book nerd buddies and some of the best people I know! XOXO to all of you!

In your opinions...how do you think they did in the movie vs. the comic books? Was it cannon? Do you think they did her justice? So I never had any super strong reaction to any of the Carol Danvers stuff I read, so the movie's pretty-good-ness was about what I expected. I've only read a scattered handful of Ms. Marvel, though.) I think I'm with berk... I would a liked to see more of the late '60s Mar-Vell stuff as part of the plot of the movie. (Also would have appreciated a J. Jonah Jameson cameo from Ms. Marvel first series.) It's kind of neat to see Carol, a character who's been bounced around and started as a supporting character and joined the Starjammers and then was an alcoholic for some reason, become suddenly really popular once creators figure out what do do with her. Best parts of the move: '90s period piece, which we don't see much of. Kitty! Worst part of the Movie: They kept saying "She lets her emotions control her" without ever really showing this happens. Show don't tell!

Isn't Carol Danvers Supergirl's adopted sister?

Isn't Carol Danvers Supergirl's adopted sister? Ok, that is the Marvel/DC crossover that needs to happen next.

I remember thinking it odd as a kid that Supergirl and Ms. Marvel had that same last name. I mean it wasn't like Smith or Jones, I did not know of Rebecca at the time, so it seemed unique to me.

Isn't Carol Danvers Supergirl's adopted sister? Never occurred to me until I had to googled it and they both shared the same last name. Interesting and Fun Facts to share.

Since Roy Thomas created Carol in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 and later wrote the story where she received the irradiation that eventually gave her super-powers (Captain Marvel #18), I wouldn't be surprised if he chose "Danvers" because of the Supergirl connection. He invoked the original Fawcett Captain Marvel via the Mar-Vell/Rick Jones relationship, so perhaps he always had in mind turning Carol into the equivalent of Mary Marvel/Supergirl but without eliminating the romantic possibilities by making the distaff version a blood relative (sister/first cousin). I'll try to remember to ask Roy when I touch base with him at next month's Washington State Summer Con.

Kurt, honestly, you have to be the coolest guy on this forum. There's a question presented about a character's origin, and you, without an ounce of pretense, casually mention that you'll ask the character's creator when you "touch base" with him at a show. Not when you "see him" at the show or anything like that, but when you have the opportunity to talk with Roy Thomas because you guys have collaborated on projects and have a personal relationship. I summon the incredible respect!

Wait...are YOU a Rebecca? I wish! No, there is someone else goes by Becca, but could be a reference to something else, who knows.

He didn't remember specifically how he came up with that name but definitely did not have Supergirl in mind when he chose it. When someone mentioned that connection a few years later, he was actually dismayed. "I never would've named her that if I'd remembered Supergirl's Linda Danvers identity," he told me. Nor did he have turning Carol into a super-heroine in mind at the time he wrote Captain Marvel #18. It was Stan Lee and Gerry Conway who made that choice.
So there you have it, straight from the Rascally One's own lips.
Cei-U! I summon the straight skinny!
