Was the Ultimate Iron Man comic book series the one where Tony was sick when he was a child and something to about him turning blue like a smurf?

All I can remember is buying the 1st issue and even with Andy Kubert at the art helm I went: meh, not for me.

Yeah, that first series was pretty much garbage...so much so that "in universe" the events of that story were actually referred to as an unlicensed tv show based on a memoir by a bitter ex-butler. Ultimate Iron Wars was pretty good though, I strongly suggest reading that instead.

Ultimate X-Men i still need to binge read through.
Ultimate Iron Man i wouldn mind trying to read a few issues to see how it goes but does Tony turn into a blue smurf all the time?

Him being blue is really temporary.... it's been a while, but IIRC Ultimate Tony (from that book) was a genetically manufactured super genius... it reminded me very much of Bean from the Ender's Game books. It was unique for sure, and not as bad as some things, but nothing to write home about. People hated it enough that they completely scrapped it and made him much more similar to 'regular' Tony when Ultimates hit.

I read it because it was Orson Scott Card and, generally, I enjoyed it. It was very imaginative and rich in characterization. The problem was it was in no way Tony Stark, and so I ultimately got rid of it and have felt no need to revisit it. Would have worked better as an Orson Scott Card novel NOT called Iron Man.

True on all counts, but then you could say that about alot of author's takes on any given character.
