Hey The Captain this one's for you... Announced today the Russo Brothers' (of the obscure Marvel movie franchise) next project will be a streaming anime series based on Hasbro's Magic: The Gathering game for Netflix. I know there were a few Magic The Gathering Comics (Charles Vess worked on at least covers of some of them so they got on my radar even though I don't play the game) too, and a series of novels, but I think this is the first time it will make it into a "motion" media. -M

Thanks for the heads-up, @mrp. I'm more familiar with the Russo Bros. from the TV show "Community" than any silly movies they may or may not have been involved with, but I'm sure they did OK with those.
It makes sense that they would pick that particular character as a focal point, if that is indeed the case based on the teaser image. She's a pyromancer, so it will make for interesting visuals, and her personality is impetuous and unpredictable, which would appeal to the demographic they are attempting to court with this, rather than some of the other planeswalker characters (although I would like them to use Liliana, who is a necromancer and commands armies of zombies).
I'm not a big fan of anime (the only one I've ever been able to sit all the way through is "Vampire Hunter D", but I will probably at least give this a shot to see if it is any good.

Chandra may not be the focal point, just a cool Firestorm visual. This sort of project is as much a cipher as a "Hungry Hungry Hippos" movie would be. OK, there are some characters and backstory, but it's all up to the new team to do something interesting.

10 episodes of people playing cards..... How many seasons have tv have ESPN, NBC and Fox Sports gotten out of people playing cards (poker)? It's a more successful formula than you would guess. Hell, ESPN even televised Magic tournaments at one point, and there is a whole network now (Twitch) that is built around watching other people play ccg, rpgs and video games, so that model might be more successful than what Netflix is trying to do with MTG with this series. -M

True. Games have generational appeal. My teen son would watch people playing video games all day if it were an option. They support themselves with branded merchandise, just like rock bands.

The best game I've ever played was arguably the Dragon Ball Z CCG from the early 2000s. That was so much fun. Problem was that I only had two people to play against, and there was never really an online presence strong enough to warrant a huge internet playing community. Sadly, that game is essentially a relic now long forgotten.
I wish I had gotten into Magic in the 90s. I remember everyone was playing it, but I guess I was just never into wizards and fantasy. It's the only CCG that has remained strong to this day though. There are online video games based on Magic now though I think. A friend of mine played one on XBox at least from what I remember.
An anime series might be interesting with the Russo brothers involved. Definitely a new direction for them. Netflix did well with turning Castlevania into an anime at least.

Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon still have pretty strong followings as CCGs. At one of our local gaming shops, they easily get 25-30 people to show up on Pokemon night to play.
