Finally got around to reading The Crimebusters #5 today. Wow, how far this book has come! I love the lavish new colors that really take advantage of the paper and print quality Crimebuster is using. The plot is rich, the mystery complex and fascinating, and the villains made for hilarious comic relief even while subtly hinting at something downright scary. As usual, the supporting cast seems far more fascinating and rich than Chuck and trixie themselves: Loover and Granny Gumshoe -- I want so much more from these two!
One thing I'm torn on is the final reveal: it's clever, but I can't decide whether or not it's also supposed to be a gag. I found it hilarious, almost like it was ripped from the pages of The Tick, but I'm not sure I was supposed to.
As for the new artist, I'm impressed. Yes, his artistic abilities are pretty good, but I'm even more impressed with what this tells us about how far Scott has come in bringing his dream to make comic books to reality. He's now got multiple titles, a long list of allies in the business, and now he even has a brilliant colorist and a competent penciler/inker working to help him turn out higher quality work faster. My only regret here is that I truly liked Scott's art. It was definitely inconsistent, but it was getting better. While Radwanski's art is consistent and professional-looking, Scott's best panels looked far far better, and I miss them. Scott, when you inevitably read this, I truly hope you'll consider at least penciling a backup every now and then. Your art was evolving into something truly special. You had a unique signature style that doesn't resemble anything else I've seen, and I'd love to see you take it to the next level.
Anyway, keep these Crimebusters adventures coming! And if Loover or Granny ever get their own books, you'd better bet I'll be there!
Thanks for all the kind words and the support, I really appreciate it very much!
We'll definitely be seeing more of both Granny and Loover in the future. I'd love to do some solo stories with Granny at some point, I just don't have the time at the moment, or a story idea that I really need to tell. I am hoping to do a 100-page (or bigger) giant with her that reprints all her Golden Age appearances, and when I do that I might do a new story, but we'll have to see.
The reveal at the end wasn't meant to be funny, but I also don't mind if that was your reaction Without any spoilers, the character we meet there is a Golden Age public domain character that I am going to very much be revamping as the original had some issues. I decided to add him because thematically he seemed like potentially a really interesting foil for detectives. We'll see how it goes!
I'm glad you liked Mac's art, and I really appreciate the kind words about my art. I've had a few people say they liked my art better, which has surprised me because I never felt like I could get the drawings to look the way I wanted them. I will say that I still want to push things a little with storytelling, so there's some layout quirks in issues 6 and 7 that I hope end up being cool. I'm curious to see how Mac feels about some of the ideas I have for drawing this stuff -- I always tried to add in something a little different in each issue, like the stairs page in issue #1 or the haunted house spread in issue #2, and I want to do more of that sort of thing even though I'm not drawing it myself. Issue #5 was more straightforward, but hopefully we can do some more experimental stuff again with #6 that is more interesting.
Next issue I also have squeezed in a short guest appearance by the Hardy Boys -- they entered the public domain this year, so I wanted to use them asap. Nancy Drew will be in the PD in 2 more years, and you can be sure I'll be teaming her up with Trixie as soon as I can!
