Perhaps the most over-used moniker in all of comicdom, I would have said there have been countless superheroes to call themselves "Marvel" except that I just took the hour to list them all and count them (20. 21 if you count the cinematic Captain Mar-Vell, who wasn't technically a superhero). So which one comes to mind first when you think of a "Captain Marvel," or a "Ms. Marvel"? Which character owns the legacy best? And if the answer to both questions isn't the same, which question carries more weight for you?

Fawcett's Captain Marvel for me.
I am dismayed whenever I hear someone refer to him as Shazam. Which I guess he is right now. But he'll always be Captain Marvel to me.
He *looks* like a Captain Marvel. Maybe I'm saying that because he was the first. I mean, I like Mar-Vell a lot (what a visually interesting character he is). If Fawcett'e Captain Marvel had never existed, it'd probably be Mar-Vell for me. But I'm going to vote for Captain Marvel.

For me it is Mar-Vell all the way if only because he was and is the 1st hero with the moniker! Billy Batson Captain Marvel though is a very close 2nd but since I never grew up with the classic version and mostly know the DC version throughout the 70's upward the good Kree Captain remains 1st in my book. 3rd up would be Freddy Freeman Captain Marvel Junior!
But if you want to talk "Legacy" aspect then it would be the triumvirate of Batson, Freeman and Mary all the way. The Marvel Family concept of those 3 united really speaks volumes and cannot be denied as to how really creative and imaginative they are. Jerry Ordway knew this and made them all 3 very special, and that to this day remains a really great run for those characters.

Sharon Ventura ... Ms MarvelI adore redheads and she is dynamic, highly motivated, confident, and one of my favorite Marvel Characters in the 1980's and affectionately called She-Thing and had a good relationship with the THING of the Fantastic Four of which I find it unique on it's own. I also surprised to see her as a member of Grapplers that also gave her an identity of her own and in that time I was into Professional Wrestling and reminded me of Alundra Blaze aka Medusa (of WWF/WWE) of which was a favorite of mine at the time and has all of the confident of Blaze. I would pick Alundra to play Sharon easily back then. I know that most of you here are questioning my pick here ... but, believe me I was a steady reader of She-Thing back then and I find her costume striking, colorful, and most of all ... totally unique and I find her blue wrap around belt sexy and with a charm of it's own.

Other (I actually missed someone?? Please explain!) It looks like you missed this guy: But I voted, in all seriousness, for M.F. Enterprise's Captain "Split!" Marvel, Roger Winkle. As I've mentioned several times, the first comic book I remember having was an issue of this legendarily bad and notoriously plagiaristic series, and my nostalgia produces a great love for this character. For years, I thought I had imagined it all, until my LCS dealer pointed out an issue. "It's real! It's real!"

Tough call. I vote for Mar-Vell. I do like Billy Batson, and I really enjoyed the Ms. Marvel series, but I guess I gotta go with the original Marvel Marvel.

I was torn between Mary and the '70s Ms. but went with the one I had the plastic soft drink cup for, and fighting lizard people drawn by Dave Cockrum!

Junior, all the way. Cooler color scheme, more interesting stories, Mac Rayboy art. Plus, no Junior, no Elvis hairstyle and Vegas suit. TCB! Thank ya very much................

Went with Mar-Vell
For me, his tale and origins are Superman-esque but I enjoy it more. He protects Earth and winds up being considered a traitor by his own race as a result of it. Early issues were at their best artistically when Severin, Heck or Kane worked on the title. Of course, there is Starlin's strong arc on the title too and it continued to be an intriguing series afterwards. He is one of the few characters who, if you create your own chronology, has a definite beginning and a tragic end in the Death of Captain Marvel graphic. Overall, a great character for me who was always well drawn (and yes I actually like that green suit too). Stories were always ok too.
Second up would have to be Ms. Marvel. I felt it was a fun title that again, had great artwork but just needed a little more direction in terms of the plotline of some of the stories.

The historian in me says the original Bill Parker-C.C. Beck version is THE Captain Marvel, with the Ordway reinterpretation (a personal fave) adding to the equation. But my nostalgic side really wanted to vote for Monica Rambeau. I love the Stern-era Avengers, especially after the Buscema-Palmer team came onboard, and Monica's Cap was a big reason why. I know some fans decry her as a Mary Sue but I disagree. She was already smart, strong, competent, and confident (albeit held back professionally by her gender) before gaining her powers, as well as having the good sense to realize she was in over her head and turn to the Avengers for help. Her home base in New Orleans was a nice change of pace, and her warm, healthy relationship with her parents was refreshing. Watching her grow into both her amazing powers and her role as one of Earth's defenders was a pleasure. My only complaint was her original design. I liked the color scheme but the glider vanes looked clumsy except when in flight and her hair style could only work in comics. Sometimes I think she would've become a super-star and fan favorite if she'd started with a more dynamic look and a different name.
Cei-U! I summon the underdog!
