Unless I've missed it, Marvel Comics has done nothing to commemorate Subby's 80th anniversary. I find that sad.
Now, I accept that he is not going to have as high a profile as Superman and Batman. He's got no 1,000th issue to come. There have been periods where he hasn't had a title. I am not for one moment suggesting that Marvel should have given him the same treatment that DC gave Supes and Bats.
It seems wrong that a character that predates even heavy-hitters like Spidey and Hulk isn't getting something. A one-shot! A mini-series! A limited series! I feel that the best I can expect is a reprint. However, I think something - a one-shot at least! - would have been a good idea. I know he may be small potatoes next to others. I suspect Spidey's 60th anniversary will be something. Ditto the FF, Hulk, Iron Man, etc. I know that a commemoration should probably be in proportion to the character's popularity. I suspect a Subby one-shot would sell fewer copies than Action Comics #1,000 or Detective Comics #1,000.
But I feel Marvel has missed a trick here, I really do.
I like Namor. I bought some 60s comics years ago. They were really enjoyable. I'm sorry he only got one "Essential" volume. He's a great character. And I like what Byrne did with Subby, making him a mogul out to protect the oceans. The character has a great history even though he hasn't soared as high as Spidey and others.
Any thoughts?

Like you said Sub-Mariner doesn't have the same draw as Superman or Batman and Marvel realizes this. But they are "celebrating" their 80th year. They are printing their Marvel Comics #1000 and also reprinting Marvel Comics #1 from 1939. I suspect 2021 will be a big year for them celebrating the 60th year of the FF and the start of the "Marvel Age."

Personally, I think DC and Marvel should have collaborated on a Namor/Aquaman crossover in a tale called "Water".

Also 2021 will be Capt America 80th year. I suspect Marvel will make a big deal about it.

I'm trying to think about what anniversaries are coming up. It'll be interesting to see what they do to commemorate those things.
It's a shame we can't always tie anniversaries in with movie productions, e.g. a James Bond film released in 2007 would have been interesting. A Captain America film in 2021 would be good. But I know we can't have everything.

Well there will be a lot in the next 5 yrs as comics introduced a ton of characters between 1940-1942 and again between 1962-1964.

Namor barely classes as C-list nowadays, so I'm not surprised Marvel aren't doing much to celebrate him

We did, but I'd have liked a movie released in the year that had 007 in the digits.

The media rights thing is frustrating because who doesn't want George Clooney or Benjamin Bratt as Namor? Of course, business does trump everything. I mean, I want a solo Juggernaut ongoing series, but I know they can't cater for me - and it wouldn't sell (I'm only being half-serious). I just wish there was a way for business to be set aside so that an 80-year-old character could be commemorated.

Nothing short of a Namor movie will make Namor a major player.
Too bad they don't at least put some kind of legacy / anniversary one-shot out. It's gotta sell better than some of their other lower selling titles at least.

There is a Byrne omnibus and a Golden Age omnibus coming in the fall. That's if you like to celebrate with unwieldy reading material that could be injurious to your lap.

I do like Byrne's run, particularly his idea of making Namor a mogul.

I have a friend by the name of Jeff, and he ran a Comic Book Store for 40 years from 1970 to 2010; sold his business in 2011 and been in semi-retirement and told me that he blamed UNIVERSAL for not allowing Marvel to put out some form of a Commemorating Issue for Namor. I'm angry too, and they should allow at least an one-shot deal because he's a legend in the world of Marvel Comics and one of the Golden Age founding characters that should have some RESPECT at all. This is so disturbing for both of us and we both feel that I just hate when character rights are being held and that alone irks me more than ever before. I have been thinking of this for sometime and I'm so disgusted that in my world of Marvel Comics, Sub Mariner should be up there as a LEGACY CHARACTER with respect and admiration. Most of you here, I'm surprised that he not being respected here and I'm feeling a bit of sadness and all that ... and I'm not complaining one bit here and I just feel that both Jeff and I are huge INVADERS FAN and the trio of Human Torch, Captain America, and Namor, the Sub Mariner should have some form of RESPECT and that alone would make US (Jeff and I and a horde of Namor fans in my hometown of Seattle) feel PROUD of this ICON Marvel Character. They UNIVERSAL and Marvel Comics should do something about it ... if they don't it would do Namor a great disservice as a ICON Marvel Character.

I feel Namor could be the MVP of the MCU. All that Atlantean intrigue and all that, well I feel it could be like the MCU equivalent to Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings. A Namor trilogy could be epic!
